By FRANCO PANIZO

If there were any lingering questions about the health of Jermaine Jones, he answered them on Saturday.

Jones scored his first goal in over a year, netting the winner in Schalke 04's pre-season match against Hamburg SV in the Liga total! Cup 2010 semifinal. Jones took an ambitious shot from around 35 yards out, but was rewarded as goalkeeper Frank Rost misread it. Raul also made his debut for Schalke in the match, which consisted of two 30-minute halves.

Jones and Schalke will play Bayern Munich in the final on Aug. 7.

If you haven't seen it, here's the goal:

What do you think of Jones' goal? Hoping to see him called up against Brazil? Thinking Rost is a distant cousin of Robert Green?

  1. He did NOT do all that in two years. You are drinking the Kool Aid. I, for one, don’t want him anywhere near the USMNT as he doesn’t have the experience or expertise to do what some seem desperately want him to do.

  2. Isaac, also, with something like the Jones situation, there are some things that are no brainers. That is like giving Bradley credit for fielding 11 players. why wouldn’t you bring Jones into camp?!

  3. Be reasonable: That is not actually true. Klinsmann had a sweeping hand in changing the German team. He got rid of almost all of the established old time German players (and received huge criticism at the time) and brought new young and upcoming players. Many of the same players that played in this last World Cup.

  4. Isaac, I think Bob Bradley has done a decent job, but sticking with him for another 4 years would be a mistake for two reasons.

    1) Sticking with a World Cup coach for two consecutive World Cups rarely works, (as has been demonstrated by many) in part I think because it is good to bring in new blood.

    2) Why not take the team to the next level? The US team is ready for a coach that has either coached some of the top players in the world or was a top notch player himself, or both. That is why we should get Klinsmann!

  5. Soooo…the keeper in that video is pissed at his defense? Haha I guess you gotta blame somebody, right? Kinda like the person who stumbles in a hallway then looks at the floor.

  6. That’s just laughable. What evidence do you have that Jurgen has the ability to do ANY of those things? He did well with a German team at the World Cup that he had little hand in shaping and failed at Bayern. The is only the devil you DON’T know.

  7. apparently so, if you google kinesio tape you’ll see that it’s used in odd patterns, not like the athletic tape we’re used to

  8. I’m not saying BB doesn’t make mistakes. I’m saying whatever he does correctly never matters to fans. Bradley had done a fine job with his substitutions, something people say he never does well. It’s been proved that he can take this team their first FIFA Final or beat the number one team in the world. I understand the mistakes BB has made, but why does anything going right with the team never get credited to him? BB’s tactics need work, but fans need to accept the place of a proper mentality having a huge impact on the game.

  9. Double skip shot, seemed to take a bigger hop on the second skip, which often happens.

The blue tape was all the rage in tennis a couple years ago at the US Open. It’s not just the tape, but the wacky patterns they weave. Mumbo jumbo as far as I’m concerned.

  10. You have this thing turned around the wrong way.

Klinsman would be a fool to take the USMNT job if he has the same power Bradley has.

He needs a more powerful sweeping role that will allow him to affect how our youth system develops players.

He needs Sunil’s job or he needs Sunil to be a figurehead and let Jurgen do the developmental with the youth where he can make a real impact. Klinsmann can’t really help the guys over 20 as much as he can the youth system.

Bradley is an excellent coach and with Jurgen in Sunil’s old job over Bradley and doing REAL player development at the youth level, we might have a shot at winning the 2018 or 2022 Cup. The USSf would be in better hands.

  11. You should say “…he does wrong is proof that he should be lobotomized.” It’s more catching than saying fired and for many interweb armchair coaches, it more accurately reflects what they want to say too.

  12. Did you watch the first goal in that Ghana game?

Clark did give that ball away, but that’s not why Ghana scored.

First of all he gave it away in the center circle, nearthe half way line after being put in a very awkward position by M. Bradley on a short pass.

It was like watching a RB botch a QB handoff.

I’d like to know why Bradley put Clark in such a bad spot in front of Boateng who watched the whole thing develop in front of him.

First mistake by Bradley, second mistake by Clark.

After Boateng robs Clark, Demerit, who was watching the whole thing develop, runs away from Boateng and then reverse field and goes back to him but is too late and only succeeds in partially screening Boateng at the edge of the box when he shoots. Third msitake by Demerit.

The Best Goalie the World Has Ever Seen meanwhile, is sleeping somewhere and is surprised when Boateng’s shot beats him to the NEAR post, a cardinal goal keeping sin. Yes, he was partially screened but Howard is one of our stalwarts, one of the pillars of the team and if he can’t stop a shot that I’m confident, M, that you could have stopped then what are we to do?

This goal was a screw up by 4 players but only Howard’s mistake actually resulted in a goal. Admittedly, it was a fair to middling shot but someone with Howard’s reputation is supposed to stop things like that

If you want a head for it take Howard’s, our big hero untouchable. But we can’t crticise him so let’s blame Rico instead so we can them take out B. Bradley

If you want to blame B. Bradley blame him for not begging Freidel to come out so that the USMNT could have a real goalkeeper not some wannabe.

  13. No, absolutely no coach at the WC should be so uncertain of his lineup that he has to change it every game at half time. Once you get to the tournament, substitutions should be used to replace carded players, injured players, gassed players late in the game, or to bolster the defense when leading or to add another attacker when trailing.

What BB did was replace underperforming midfielders & forwards with their backups which isn’t a tactical sub but rather a lineup gaffe. The entire country knew Ricardo Clark was the wrong player to start against Ghana, but Bob still did it and was rewarded with having to yank him in the 1st half.

The MNT coach needs to be able to see a players ability for what it is and not assume the magic pre-game pep talk and starting nod can elevate a mediocre player to greatness.

  14. Ricardo Clark WILL grow, ya know. He’s at a fairly good club in Germany and he was getting minutes for them in their last games of their season. He’ll get better, so to ask him to retire from the national team when he’s got room to grow is just plain stupid. If we did that, Bocanegra would have been retired from the national team for not being able to deal with Ghana’s long ball back in 2006 that led to the penalty. We would hve had Donovan retire for a TERRIBLE performance during that game. Quit thinking with your emotions, let the grudge go and move on.

  15. Those 5 players in the CM look very dangerous. If they can improve dramatically 4 years from now the US could have the best mids in the world IMO

  16. Not a good goal, but at least this shot was wasn’t straight at the keeper, and he didn’t get 2 hands on it (though he should have tried to use both). Let’s not sully Green’s work of art by equating every shot that a keeper probably should have had with Green’s sweet, superior screw up.

  17. So does this mean we’ve finally (hopefully) seen the last of Clark?

    Bradley

    Jones

    Edu

    Feilhaber

    Torres

Sorry, Clark – no room in the in.

BTW, I never thanked you for the Reyna-esque giveaway against Ghana. Please, do your nation a favor – retire from the national team.

  18. Of course. Whatever Bob Bradley does right is what “any coach would do”. Why is anything Bradley does correctly made to seem like he never meant to do it or is downsized and why is anything he does wrong made to seem like it’s proof he should be fired. He’s done so much more right than wrong.

  19. if he wants to play internationally, it will only be for the US. FIFA allows a one time move, and he made his. He was with the team in Amsterdam for the game against netherlands, and I’ve heard nothing to say that he’s NOT interested in joining the US. I don’t think him not being named to the US roster/camp will bother him. If theres one thing I respect about bob bradley its that he’s very good at communicating with players. From what I’ve heard, he’s in constant contact with players on the team and in the pool, in fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets a phone call from bob soon congratulating him on the goal.

  20. it’s called kinesio tape, it apparently helps stabilize muscles/ligaments. Its often times used after an injury. I believe, although I can’t be sure, that someone on the US was wearing it during the world cup, perhaps gooch or demerit?

  21. Still don’t understand the calls for a new coach. The players Bob has brought in will all be available for 2014 and they are all class with the exception of Bornstein. Bob bringing Jermaine Jones into the Holland camp as an observer shows where Bob wants to go with this program.

  22. That is shocking keeping. I think you get him in asap to see where he rates among the other CMs in the national team pool. I love Edu and Bradley together but there’s room for improvement. Might want to start with a change of Coach!

  23. That’s a bandage that’s very popular right now for minor muscle/back/tendon/shoulder problems and seems to help stabilize any injurious tissues/ligaments.
