Landon Donovan’s new Mexican commercial

Landon Donovan 3 (ISIphotos.com)

We all enjoyed Landon Donovan's first commercial for the Mexican lottery Ganagol (more like a betting slip than USA-style lottery), and we've been waiting patiently to see when Donovan would give us another gem for the folks South of the Border.

Donovan's second Ganagol commercial has emerged, and while it isn't as funny as the image of him in pancho, sombrero and bad fake moustache, it's still pretty funny (it starts with Donovan saying "Every time it gets easier to win in Mexico." A statement that leads to the reaction you see).

Enjoy:

What did you think of the commercial? Trying to figure out who the guy sitting next to Donovan was supposed to be? Hoping we get a third commercial?

  1. great commercial, he’s not going to be taking peyton manning’s place anytime soon but it’s a good start.

glad to see mexicans taking a healthy view of thier obsessive behaviour towards futbol. this doesn’t make up for the bags of urine or batteries they throw at players, but the first step in recovery is admitting there’s a problem.

  2. I saw this commercial yesterday when watching the Pumas game. It is OK, but not nearly as funny as the first.

LD has a love/hate relationship. By this, I mean they love to hate him. They know he is the best player in CONCACAF, and as long as he is around, they won’t dominate the US. With this said, they would give their first born child to have him on their club team (unless it is Chivas or Pumas).

  3. Of course his growth isn’t what we expected. What I’m saying is that there is definitely a chance of him growing and becoming a better player. 24-28ish is normally the prime years, but It doesn’t mean Marvell can’t grow. Just because you can’t see him growing doesn’t mean he won’t. If he has a good MLS season and a European/Scandinavian club picks him up, he’s in good shape. Charlie Davies wasn’t exactly the technical demon you see before you today when he was leaving college either. He had some skills no doubt, but he also lacked a lot, especially in the finishing department overseas for a while until his hat trick against Gais for Hammarby. Marvell Wynne has the same athleticism and work rate that Davies does. If he plays well this season or the next, he can certainly draw European interest.

  5. Whoa there Isaac…I don’t think there is any danger of Wynne becoming a great right back. Do you really think he’s getting better? Really? He has to be one of the real disappointments in the US Player pool over the last five years. I’m sure he’s a great guy and all, but he’s not even close to an international quality right back.

  6. On the last line he says “apoco pusiste Mexico”. which translates to something like: “Did you really pick Mexico?”

(SBI-He says, “Tampoco pusiste Mexico.” meaning “You didn’t pick Mexico either.”)

  7. Grows up? He’s already 24…not that that’s particularly old, but I don’t see him getting any better. Save this comment…and in 2 years, when the US is qualifying for the next World Cup, I promise you will not see Marvell Wynne playing any better than he did this go around…if he’s playing for US at all.

  8. He could play for the US basketball team. He’s shown he’s great at handling the ball in the box in late game situations.

  9. Two things.

    1) Landon Donovan picked up Spanish growing up in Redlands, CA (inland of LA by 45 miles or so) because most of his club teammates were Spanish speakers. It is widely known by Mexican media that Landon speaks Spanish and as such he gets a lot of Spanish language interviews whenever we play them. I’ve heard him do full interviews in Spanish (30 minutes), and he does OK.

    2) The last line is “you STILL didn’t vote for Mexico”. Gist of commercial:

Landon: It’s easier to win in Mexico.

    Silence.

Bartender: What did you say Landon Donovan?

    Silence.

Landon: (Roughly.) Oh…, with Ganagol, it’s easier to win in Mexico. You only have twelve games. (Shows bartender his betting slip.)

    Silence.

    (Bartender looks slip over.)

    Bartender: Give me a pen.

    (Makes mark on slip.)

Bartender: You STILL didn’t vote for Mexico.

  10. Landon is big in Mexico. He’s popular with fans in a “I hate that f**king guy, but would love to have him on my club team” kinda way. The fact that he speaks very decent Spanish only makes it worse for these conflicted fans. Why? He does interviews with all the big journalists/TV networks.

    TRANSLATION:

Landon: Every time I play in Mexico, it gets easier to win.

    (The bar goes silent)

Mexican Pirate Guy: What did you say, Landon Donovan?

    (Donovan gets nervous)

Landon: Wait. Wait. I’m talking about the new lottery card/game, “Ganagol” (winning goal).

    Mexican Pirate: Ganagol?

Landon: Yeah, Ganagol. It’s the game to play because its only 12 games.

    (The pirate grabs the card)

Pirate: Let me see that.(looks to waiter). Godfather (term of endearment like Govenor), let me have a pen. (He looks at the car and starts to fill it out. Then he turns to Donovan.) Don’t tell me you put Mexico? (As in country of birth. As in he can qualify to win the lottery).

    Donovan smirks.

  11. So if he grows to become a great right back… What’s your excuse then?

This is such a stupid comment and all comments like it are just as stupid. You’re acting like he’s not going to get better.

Or did Marvell Wynne hurt your feelings?

  12. Ives,

Please, for us gringos with VERY limited Spanish (Ganar, Dos-a-cero), can you give us a translation?

  13. he’s on record as saying he’s more noticed in mexico than he is in california and it’s not even close. You might recall there were rumors about him going on loan to mexico last year before he went to Everton. This is the second commercial playing off of the “it’s easier to win in mexico” theme. As far as I know, he’s the only one doing them.
I don’t know if he’s fluent but I do know that he’s made a point to study and learn it

  14. Having a recognizable rival say the tag line that it’s easier to win in Mexico is what works in this commercial. And Landon fits the bill. They couldn’t do the outraged Mexican shtick if it was a Mexican player in the commercial.

  15. Haha, love that he’s in crisp USMNT warmups in the middle of some random mexican bar. They couldn’t afford to have altidore, edu, beasley, or Buddle sit next to him instead?

Also, anyone catch that last line? Did the Mexican pirate say he was betting on Mexico?

  16. Need background. Is Landon really popular in Mexico? Is this part of a series of soccer star commercials, and others (Blanco, Gio, etc.) are also taking their turns? It’s pretty interesting that the Mexican lottery is using a US soccer player’s endorsement. By the way, anyone know if Lando is fluent en espanol?
