New York Red Bulls at Columbus Crew: Your Running Commentary

NYRBCrew

The Red Bulls (8-5-2) visit Columbus Crew Stadium in a battle for first place at 7:30 (MSG). The Crew (8-3-4) currently hold a two point advantage over NYRB, so a tie or win would keep them atop the Eastern Conference.

Columbus is fresh off a loss to the KC Wizards last week thanks to an early Teal Bunbury goal. The Crew have an opportunity to beat a Red Bulls that will not boast their latest addition Thierry Henry. They already took the first meeting of the season 3-1, where Columbus exposed NYRB's central defense.

The Red Bulls tied their last game with DC United and had trouble creating quality chances against an organized DC defense. Scoring help is on the way in Thierry Henry, but will not make his debut until next week against Spurs. The team will rely on Juan Pablo Angel and Dane Richards up top to spark some magic against Columbus.

  1. Yes he’s american, and yes he’s legit. He was the only one who looked good at the pre-olympic tournament 2 years ago and represented the US U20’s at the 2009 WC and looked pretty good there too. He also got a call-up to the full nationals at the age of 18 against Barbados in 2008, but he didn’t get in the game

  2. Hey NY, Marshall owns JPA, and has for years.

He doesn’t disappear against us, he gets swallowed up.

    And your midfield stinks.

  3. Ubi has not being the same since he got hurt. I have said this before but Stammler and Lindpere do not work in the midfield together. I feel that Stammler only wants to take the role of attacking midfielder and not worry about defending when needed. There is a fluidity that is not there in the midfield and a hunger to win a game against the Crew that I have not seen since the first game we played against them in 2008 at Giants Stadium.

I will say it again. I LOVE THIS CLUB and all its supporters but I can’t accept any player who wears our colors and not give it the respect it deserves. Many players yesterday embarrassed us with a dismal and substandard performance. I would prefer that Backe would play some of the kids instead, they play with more heart. There are tons of good committed players in MLS that would love to play for us, maybe we need to take a long hard look at some of the people in our roster and get rid of the ones with NO CHARACTER only then we can strive to get better every game.

  6. Just got back from Lehigh:
    NPSL Eastern Playoffs
    FC Sonic 3
    NYRB U23s 2
a wonderful match, fantastic venue, great crowd (500+), low foul count, warm but beautiful evening and even the referee crew was good.
Good luck FC Sonic down in the final 4

  7. The crew dominated from the get go. It was a completely different game than when we played at NYRB. Warchzya must have attended a coaching clinic this week and was told that possession matters. That was the best the Crew have looked in the three years I have had season tickets.

BTW- Henry was on the field before the game and signed numerous autographs. He was really nice as he talked with the fans who gathered. To bad we can’t get a talented striker like him to come to Columbus. I guess we will have to get by with Garey, Lenhart and Renteria. I was glad to see Renteria finally get a start up top.

  8. Wondering the same thing. I’d much rather have him than Albright or Sassano. Hall was on the bench, not hurt, just buried for some reason.

  9. Anybody familiar with FC Dallas. Brek Shea just scored a goal and he’s looked pretty good from what I’ve seen. Is this guy legit and is he American?

  12. Unlucky, Red Bulls definitely left it all on the field but were just unlucky… Crew got lucky with the win

  16. Can we now please get rid of JPA? PLEASE!!!!!!!!
Let’s bring a quality player to play side by side to Henry. TH will evidence many, many of the limitations of JPA.
JPA is looking more and more like Blanco. Except that JPA lacks Blanco’s multiple talents.

  17. This is the worst I have seen nyrb play this year…. Pathetic. They are making those Brits calling the mls a pub league, look to be true…

  18. On the road, whose fault was this goal? Someone said team gave up the first? What about going forward? Shouldn’t cm be feeding angel?Henry will be wasted if he can’t get the ball

  19. The Crew played on Wednesday. You would think NYRB would try to play a fast, pressing game against a tired team.

Instead they are waiting drinking coffee until the Crew brings the ball across the midfield stripe.

  20. New drinking game – every time Shep mentions tickets against Tottenham. I wouldn’t have made it through the 1st half.

Looks like someone from NYRB is petrified that Henry will debut in front of a half empty stadium.

  21. I like Roy Miller but not on the wing. Why isn’t Lindpere taking corners? Someone needs to light a fire under there asses!

  22. The red bulls look like they have been partying hard due to th14…… Sigh

Thierry is questioning why he came with this horrible performance.

  23. Where has Hall been? He had some good games I didn’t see him in the list of injuries? Albright gets scratched, you’d expect him to start, and he’s not on the bench last I saw either?
