Report: AC Milan eyes Dempsey

Just a week after seeing manager Roy Hodgson depart for Liverpool, Fulham could be losing Clint Dempsey next.

No, Dempsey isn't joining Hodgson at Liverpool, but according to Yahoo Sports, Dempsey is on the radar of Italian giant AC Milan.

If Dempsey were to join Milan, he would join U.S. teammate Oguchi Onyewu, who re-signed with the club after his injury-hit first season.

What do you think of Dempsey potentially joining Milan? Hoping he stays in the Premier League? Think USA-C Milan will stick as a nickname?

  1. Feilhaber has proven to be a good sub assuming his head is into it.

Holden hasn’t proven a dammed thing.

Compared to Dempsey they are still “prospects”.

  2. “I also heard a rumor that Napoli was interested in Dempsey. I would be more welcoming of that move…” If youhave ever been to Naples you wouldn’t be.

As for your other sentiment, it stinks of mediocrity. I would think you would want your national team players to believe they are the best and want to show the world that they are.

Oh and Gooch did not have time yet to get settled before he was hurt so the juryis stillout on him.

  3. One of the reasons you play in a World Cup is that it is the game’s biggest shop window for players and coaches.

Clint is 27. He has maybe 4-5 real good years left.

If this rumour is true then he has a chance to make some big money and play in the Champions league.

Or he could stay at Fulham and get “more experience” while everyone forgets about him and the World Cup.

If he has a chance at Milan he should go. He’d be a fool not to.

  4. Maybe because the new guy may not see things your way and is going to bring in HIS guys?

Clint was in the top 14 or so not necessarily a sure fire starter. It’s not like he has the same status as Lampard and Terry or Gerrard and Torres.

  5. HAHAHAH never going to happen!

It would be fantastic for him to play AC – a team who could use a player with industry like Dempsey over the flair of Ronaldinho.

Plus he can convince Seedorf to come over here!

  6. What’s the tape wrapped around Dempsey’s wrist for? Is it in case he tries to cut himself during the match?

  7. With the next World Cup 4 years away I want to see Dempsey try to play at a massive club for massive money. Clint Dempsey should not worry about the national team, he should worry about his career. Playing for Milan is a once in a lifetime chance.

  8. I think it would make sense for Dempsey to join Juventus (okay, maybe that’s going a little too far) rather than joining AC Milan. It just doesn’t work.

  9. As much as i want him to stay in the Premiership. How can one say no to AC Milan? Clint wont say no to that. trust.

  10. only if playing time looks promising, otherwise he should stay where he will get more and more experience. That goes for all the players the we want to see sign to big clubs (etc. Landon Donovan, Jozy Altidore). Big club names and money are not beneficial to their experience nor our national team if they sit the bench.

  11. Your comment on Clint needing to fight for his spot with Hodgson gone is completely unfounded. How do you even figure that? Clint is GOOD, why would he be sent to the bench because Hodgson is gone?

  12. Since the EU has free trade agreements, they can’t deny opportunities to members. This is actually the point UEFA brings up every time FIFA tries to limit the number of foreigners on the European leagues.

  13. Something to be aware of: Milan are also rumored to be going after Keisuke Honda, a similar player to Dempsey. Only one of them will sign obviously. but these two rumors coming out at the same time means they definitely want an attacking mid and it isn’t just paper talk.

  14. Uh, I wasn’t talking about prospects. I was talking about people who were actually on the WC team such as Holden and Feilhaber.

  15. I seriously doubt that AC Milan are going to use their two non-EU slots on Onyewu and Dempsey.

  16. It would be like LD going to Everton. Deuce would be able to acclimate sooner with a national teammate already in the side.

  17. Clint will make it into the starting 11. the guy never quits, if he wants it bad enough, which we all should know he does, then he’ll find time. definitely not worried about him being benched, because it’s happened before at fulham and he always finds a way back in. go for it clint

  18. Eh… I love Clint, he’s a tough mofo, but I don’t think he’s going to see much time at Milan. He’d probably force his way onto the field, but nothing more than a few ~10 minute sub stints and the occasional cup competition start.

  19. I love that some of you are telling Clint to stay at Fulham instead of a move to Milan. Are you crazy or stupid, or both? He has a chance to move to one of the biggest clubs in the world. Sign up now!!! You only have a few years left in your career.

  20. You are nuts. He will not be as good playing in MLS versus playing in Europe. What you are saying is the equivalent of lets bring M. Bradley to NY Red Bulls.

  21. Yes, it would, considering he is one of 3 Americans to score in more than one World Cup.

And let’s have some of our prospects spend a couple of years producing rather than penciling them in on potential.

  22. He better work his a– off to get PT. Not sure Italian football is where he can play best though. But he’ll fit in well with his dives. (that was sort of a joke. Deuce rules.)

  23. I know that you can get a UK passport after 5 years of living legally in the country. I think he came to Fulham in 2007, however, so he hasn’t lived there long enough. So unless he has a European parent / grandparent / spouse (his wife is American I believe) then he would not be considered EU. I think his daughter might have a UK passport though so if she is not good enough to make the USWNT, she could always play for England Ladies.

My question about Serie A is if they are trying to limit the number of non-Italian players, why wouldn’t they limit the number of non-Italian EU players that can be signed, too? Is this some sort of EU law? Because there are lots and lots of players in Serie A from the EU, too. They are sort of contradicting their theory of developing more homegrown players here by letting in Spaniards, Portuguese, Slovenians, French, Swiss, etc.

  24. Milan is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, he’d make a lot more money, he’s in his prime, he’s got good momentum off of the World Cup and the Juve goal, and he’d do well in Italy, and find a place on an aging Milan team. He’s also 4 years off the next World Cup and can afford the time to adjust to a new team, if he needs the time. There is no downside here, especially that his situtation at Fulham is unknown with an unknown manager coming in. If Bob Bradley got the job, CD would be an easy target if the team faltered and Bob didn;t bench him — not as an ideal situation as it might seem on its face.

  25. In my humble opinion, Clint was the best American at the World Cup. Donovan had THE moments, but he disappeared for long stretches. Dempsey was dangerous every time he got the ball. His work rate off the ball was exceptional. The opponents feared him. And he has stones. In 2014, when Donovan loses his speed, Dempsey’s guile will make him the focal point. He will succeed in AC Milan.

  26. Well, no he’s not…but he will get plenty of playing time at AC Milan and I think it’s a great move.

  27. I think Clint can succeed in Serie A and at Milan. To me, he should go where he feels comfortable with the coach, squad and style of play. While I’m not as a Deuce fan and observer thrilled with the idea of Clint joining Milan at this time (if they have a tough start to the season, will they trust newbies?), more power to him wherever he goes.

  28. Also, is it terrible if Dempsey misses the 2014 WC? I mean I love Dempsey. He is a bas a**. But, He will be 31, and there are suitable, not to mention talented people behind him. I would love it if he was there and starting, in fact I want him to be, but I won’t be terribly worried if he doesn’t make it.

  29. Now is the time in his career.. and in the world cup cycle to go for it.

Clint should give it a shot and see what happens. Otherwise he may always wonder if he could have played on a big four in one of the big countries. If it doesnt work out in one year move on.

  30. Yeah, just international retirement. But (like most of the squad) he’s getting old, it’s getting harder to fit in guys like him, Pirlo, Seedorf in to the line up by asking them to play out wide where they have to run more.

  31. I’m sure they would play him out wide, not as a forward, which is the biggest hole in their roster. Stacked up front and CM, yes.

Not sure who all this young talent is in the midfield.
