Altidore scores equalizer in Villarreal friendly

U.S. national team striker Jozy Altidore scored the equalizing goal for Villarreal in Sunday's 2-2 exhibition draw against Besiktas, volleying home his first goal since scoring in a pre-World Cup friendly against Turkey.

The goal came against Turkish club Besiktas, the same team he was reportedly set to be sold to. No deal has been completed at this point for Altidore, who will be joining the U.S. national team for Tuesday's friendly against Brazil.

Here is the goal:

What did you think of the finish? Hoping Altidore stays with Villarreal? See him starting against Brazil on Tuesday?

  1. It was telling that Jozy can, indeed, score when he actually gets service. How many good crosses dot your memory of his season with Hull?

  2. No, he can’t because he’s not yet an American citizen. If he gets capped while he only holds one passport (an Armenian one), then he will only be eligible for Armenia. If he waits until he becomes an American citizen, he can play in a non-FIFA sanctioned match (a friendly) and then make a one-time switch to the other country like Jermaine Jones.

  3. The only way Jozy lost weight was muscle. He’s always been ripped, really, not NFL linebacker, but big soccer player ripped. Check out his SportsCenter commercial, if you want. I think it’s much more a case of Villareal’s jersey’s being a more flattering cut, with larger numbers.

  4. Sorry to be picky but :

Alan Shearer was hardly “an average striker”

Mathis squandered a lot of his talent but he still realized more of his potential than EJ has to date. While they are differents typesof players, I don’t see Jozy as having the same skill level as Mathis.

  5. Great ball from Rossi. Was it a somewhat tricky finish? Yes, but any striker worth his salt puts that in the net. Its really nothing to get too excited about, but it is nice to see him get one.

  6. nevermind, you’re right, his number is officially 12. i think that’s a pretty big sign, this could be a big year for him.

  7. actually, even though i participated in the last skirmish, he has a point. this article is about altidore so it wouldnt make sense to argue about something completely different and clog up the comments with that. my proposal: why not set up a forum part of the website?

  8. if its a friendly, then he can, but it would surprise me if he took the invitation bc it would cause unnecessary paperwork and fifa bureaucracy later

  9. not sure what the case is with villarreal, but sometimes during preseason friendlies before squad numbers have been assigned, starters are just designated 1-11 and subs 12-23 so that might not actually be his number come season opener.

  10. On a totally different note…

A Russian website has reported that Yura Movsisyan has been called to play for the Armenian national team in a friendly against Iran. Can he still play for the US after a friendly for another national team?

  11. Here’s an idea, Ives. Instead of threatening bans, why not just let people talk it out. You can’t resolve differences without talking.

(SBI-You know damn well that’s not how message boards work. I’ve seen enough of these things devolve into a pointless pissing contest that ends up taking away from whatever the original discussion was about. As much as I could just sit back and let these fights drive traffic, I think they do more to take away from the site than add to it, particularly when it’s usually the same people stoking the flames. Once we launch our proper message board people will have ample opportunity to get into these debates, but until then I’ll do what I can to keep things civil.)

  12. was Jozy motivated in the Slovenia game? vs. Algeria…when it mattered most?

there are differences in Brian and Jozy for sure, but they both play relentless physical football; in that respect they are similar, not saying they are in all aspects of their games tho.

Brain is a USMNT all-timer. Jozy is…how old again? we’ll see

  13. “It’s only a good cross if Jozy is in the right place to put it in. This goal is a great example of a striker “following the play” and it leads to a goal. Good job, Jozy!”

  14. Jozy=heralded as the next big American star. I believe in him. Just needs a good run with a decent team and his morale will soar and so will his goals. If Villarreal want him, show him that. if not, let him go. But don’t give up Jozy.

oh and above. Yeah Donovan had 3, 1 being a PK. I was dissapointed Jozy didn’t even get 1 goal. Also sucks Dempsey’s 2nd was called offsides. But 2014 i can smell our guys kicking butt.

  15. I thought it was actually a little bit tricky to latch onto – a volley you “should” hit, but an easy one to mess up.

So kudos for “not making a mess of it” – the difference between the top players/teams and the almost-theres

  16. Probably because it isn’t of the utmost importance for him to be with his club during preseason. And playing well against Brazil can only help a transfer to come in fruition.
