Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Edgar Castillo may be coming off the bench with new club San Luis, but he made a case for more playing time with a goal in San Luis’ 2-1 loss to Puebla.

Castillo came off the bench in the 55th minute of the match and scored nine minutes later, hitting a left-footed shot from distance into the back of the net. The goal was Castillo’s first of the season.

Sacha Kljestan didn’t score, but he made his regular season debut for Anderlecht in the club’s 4-1 rout of recently-promoted Eupen. Kljestan started the match on the bench, but came off it in the 37th minute as teammate Lucas Biglia went down with an injury.

Here is how the Americans Abroad did this weekend:

  • Sacha Kljestan came off the bench and played 53 minutes in RSC Anderlecht’s 4-1 win vs. Eupen on Saturday..

  • Michael Parkhurst started and played 90 minutes in FC Nordsjaelland’s 2-0 win vs. Randers FC on Sunday.

  • Marcus Tracy did not dress in Aalborg BK’s 1-1 draw vs. FC Copenhagen on Saturday.

  • Chris Rolfe did not dress in Aalborg BK’s 1-1 draw vs. FC Copenhagen on Saturday. He is recovering from a hamstring injury.

  • Alejandro Bedoya and Orebro SK play Atvidabergs FF on Monday.

  • Ryan Miller and Halmstads BK play Trelleborgs FF on Monday.

  • Clarence Goodson and IK Start play Valerenga on Monday.

  • Hunter Freeman and IK Start play Valerenga on Monday.

  • Mikkel Diskerud started and played 90 minutes in Stabaek’s 3-0 loss vs. Tromso on Sunday.

  • Steve Clark dressed but did not play in Honefoss BK’s 2-1 win vs. Odd Grenland on Sunday.

  • Jose Francisco Torres did not dress in Pachuca’s 1-1 draw vs. Toluca on Sunday. He is recovering from an injury.

  • Herculez Gomez dressed but did not play in Pachuca’s 1-1 draw vs. Toluca on Sunday.

  • Marco Vidal came off the bench and played 11 minutes in Pachuca’s 1-1 draw vs. Toluca on Sunday.

  • Edgar Castillo came off the bench, played 35 minutes and scored a GOAL in San Luis’ 2-1 loss vs. Puebla on Sunday.

Impressed by Castillo’s goal? Should he be called into the U.S. team for the Brazil match? What did you think of Kljestan’s regular season debut?

  1. How about this for the callups.

    Jozy with Dempsey up top

    Feilhaber Edu Bradley Donovan

    Bornstein DeMerit Marshall Cherundolo

I doubt Bradley will call up too many guys on new teams, giving them a chance to fit in i.e. Kliejstan, Bocanegra, and probably will give guys coming back from injury a break as well i.e. Davies, Tracy, Gooch.

  2. Because only in America is the back line considered the place for less talented or skilled players. Everywhere else in the world the backs play an integral part of possession and attack. Plus with the usmnt the wings we use (donovan & dempsey) are encouraged to play inside and provide creativity, so there’s no wide cover and our backs have to stay home. On his club side he has wings that will allow him to step into dangerous areas and create. Not so on the nats.

  3. Saw the second half and the English commentators were somewhat complementary of his play. Didn’t stretch himself much, but did okay. I’m not a fan of him at all, but wanted to see how he would do there(Belgium). I would give him a 6/10.

  4. I didn’t make it up but I wasn’t listening to the English commentary so maybe they had different opinions. The belgian commentators weren’t very kind.
