Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Jermaine Jones' road to a full recovery took another step in the right direction, as Jones did something that he had not done in more than a year.

Jones started and played a full 90 minutes in a Bundesliga match for the first time since May 2009 in Schalke 04's season-opening loss to Hamburg. The full match was Jones' second straight after having played the entirety of last week's DFP Pokal match.

A pair of Americans also scored goals in their respective matches. Sacha Kljestan scored his first Belgian League goal with a header in RSC Anderlecht's 3-0 win over KSC Lokeren, while Sammy Ochoa took advantage of a goalkeeping howler in Tecos' 3-2 triumph against San Luis.

Clarence Goodson also netted this weekend, but he did so against his own team. Goodson opened the scoring in IK Start's 2-2 tie with Viking by heading the ball into his own net.

Here is how the Americans Abroad fared this weekend:

What do you think of Jones first 90-minute showing since 2009? Which goal did you like more, Kljestan's or Ochoa's? Surprised by Goodson's own goal considering his run of good form?

    1. No I wasn’t. I obviously don’t know a lot about the Mexican League or Ochoa; I am just seeing that Ochoa is starting to start at forward in that league.

    2. This would be my Own Goal call if I was an announcer. Do it Andres Cantor style. 😉

      “Oh, Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!”

    3. Get history right. Davies was called up at nearly 2 years before the Confed Cup and did not do anything special (nor did he do anything for his club prior to 2008). It was only in the year before the Confed Cup that he started scoring for Hammarby and Bradley then called him up again and used him.

It is like asking why isn’t Connor Doyle getting called up since he will clearly be a star in only 4 or 5 years?

No national team coach is going to select a player until he proves he can do well where he is (and Ching was arguably a decent striker in MLS). Not sure Hammarby is much of a step up from that.

    4. It was a pleasant surprise to see Stu in the middle, and his team win convincingly.

If he’s comfortable there, it might be time with us to with the en vogue 4-2-3-1 formation with a midfield of:

      Dempsey——–Holden———-Donovan

      ———-Edu———-Bradley——-

    5. Thank you for bringing him up. He was Bolton’s MOM for me. He controlled the midfield. He looked like a completely different player out there. I wish his volley in the 1st half went into one of the corners. He deserved something from that game for his performance.

    6. He played in the MILK cup. I don’t remember off the top of my head where he is now. I’m pretty sure he is still at Braga. Too early and lazy to look it up though.

    7. Only got to see the first 55-60 of Bolton’s game, but I thought Holden was a revelation playing at the center of the field, going box-to-box. Delivered several beautiful balls forward. Anyone know how much of a role he played on the later goals?

    8. Interesting to see Holden playing a deep-lying role in the middle. I think he could really grow into that position with experience, given his vision and long-passing ability. Frankly, I thought he looked a little lost in the first half vs. West Ham — decent defensively, but didn’t really know where to be when his team had the ball. As a result he was kind of invisible. Much different story in the second half — he was showing for his teammates and getting in good positions, and getting forward at the right times. He seemed a little too eager to get the ball off his foot, when he had time to take an extra beat with the ball and look around, but that will ome as he gains confidence. First time since Claudio Reyna was playing well that I’ve felt an American mid really has the technical ability to dictate the tempo of a game. Great to see; I hope he continues to develop.

    9. We have pretty great goalkeeping depth.

Now we have pretty great midfield depth. Bradley, Edu, Jones (if he ever plays), Clark (still in the mix), Holden, Bedoya, Kljestan, Torres, Beasley (1 or 2 more chances left) and not to mention the young guys

    10. As a Creighton Prep alumni (feeder high school) I am saddened to hear he passed on playing for Creighton U. Although, I can’t blame him, how often do these opportunities happen for young players such as Doyle. Good for him, I wish him the best.

    11. I like how US is slowly getting known for producing quality mid-fielders. First it was our keepers that were making the headlines, then our defenders started making headways into the big teams. I like this latest trend – now let’s just start producing more forwards!!!!

    12. Of course he deserves a cap.

The guy has a pulse, an American passport and plays abroad.

Bradley obviously missed out on this one.

    13. I think it’s cause Bradley doesn’t like to change things up to much..
Coyle had seen enough to play Holden in the middle.. but Bradley didn’t even try it in the friendlies. True Stu was hurt but Bradley is also the guy that kept with Ching over Davies until he had to..

A JJ and Disco Stu lineup should be tried.. we’ll see if it is.

    14. it’s early in the season, not everyone starts like drogba. Also, the pace tht he was scoring at, just about 1 a game, isn’t sustainable for anyone, certainly not herc

    15. i hope you’re being sarcastic. i really do.

Dont you think that if he were any good he’d have gotten more than 1 g*****n goal in his entire career?

    16. His other goal came in 2006. A brief investigation seems to indicate he has never played a lot of minutes, was sent down to Liga de Ascenso last year where he did score some.
For those who don’t know, Estudiantes(Tecos)are a team that is more about avoiding relegation than trying to make the playoffs.

    17. Wow. The goalkeeping in the Tecos vs. San Luis game was really bad. Sammy Ochoa’s goal was a gift, along with San Luis’ first goal. Neither of the goalkeepers looked good in any of the highlights. Do they not show saves in the Mexican League highlights, or did these keepers not make any (notable) saves.

    18. I watched the 1st half of San Luis-UAdG match and Ochoa was far from impressive. Aside from the goal he was nearly invisible. Announcers mentioned it was only his second goal in the Primera, and that he’s 24 yrs old. Not the best prospect at this point.
I didn’t watch the 2nd half because the match was painfully bad, and I get enough of that with my Pumas. (Only watching these 2 sides to maybe see Ochoa and check up on Edgar Castillo).

    19. The U.S. hassome relatively talented midfielders getting solid minutes in Europe now. There is no longer any reason why the National Team should look as discombobulated in midfield as we still do at times. Also, I can only guess that Holden was not totally fit this summer; otherwise, Bradley really must not like playing a central midfielder that has an offense first mindset.

    20. Holden looked awesome in the middle of the park for Bolton. He kept his composure, made wise decisions with the ball.

I used to make fun of him for his frosted tips, but he’s turning into a heck of a player.

    21. A little concered that Spector did not dress same with Castillo. Anyone hear why?
Aston villa losing 6-0 was a huge shock.

    22. Yeah click the link it was a bad own goal I felt bad for him. I hope Goodson do not get benched for that own goal, hopefully the coach will forgive him. Also, Ives what is going on with Davies is he still having complications with injuries ?

    23. …The kid plays 17 matches, gets 1 goal and we have people asking for a cap? Really? Like there isn’t a better striker out there we could spend our time on? One that doesn’t depend on goalkeeping errors to score? I’m not gonna say he’s never going to get a cap, I’m saying he hasn’t done enough.

    24. From Texas his dad is a former indoor pro David Doyle. Eligible for an Irish passport through his dad. Played spring soccer for Creighton then went over to train with Derby but it turned into a full blown trial and he was signed.

Played high school ball and for Dallas Texans U18s.

    25. Probably because he has 1 goal. I realize we have limited depth at Forward, but usually our strikers go on some sort of goal scoring tear before they step on the field and don’t score for the USMNT.

    26. Why hasn’t Sammy Ochoa been capped by the Senior National Team? I believe he played for the U20 USMNT at one point and has played for the Tecos’ B team in the 2nd Division. Now he’s on the top division roster and starting and he’s a forward. I know he’s probably in his mid 20s now but he deserves at least a call up.

    27. from Texas, i believe….dad’s an irishman….declined a scholarship from Creighton to play for Derby Co…so far it appears it was a wise choice.
