Juan Pablo Angel's first league game starting alongside Thierry Henry saw the 34-year-old forward strike twice in a 2-2 draw against the Houston Dynamo.
While Angel might be disappointed to not come away with all three points, his goal-scoring plaudits saw him earn the MLS Player of the Week award, Angel's second of the season. The striker's total of 11 goals is just one shy of Edson Buddle for the league lead.
Both of his goals were both set up by passes from Henry, and as the two continue to adjust to each other, look for Angel's goal tally to continue to climb.
What do you think about Angel winning? Can he overtake Buddle?

At the time I saw Angel make the diagonal runand said “crap” 🙂 But you’re right, watching the replay that was a great run from Richards to create the space.
In any case RBNY is going to a really good team by the end of this season if they aren’t already, Marquez doesn’t hurt either.
cfig, did you notice Dane Richards’ run on the same play? His run drew a defender away from Angel, and might have been more pivotal to the goal than Angel’s own run.
It was quite entertaining. And worth the watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y9nsaEIenY
Watching from that end of the pitch on Angel’s second goal, the gulf in class between he and Henry and most MLS defenders was clearly demonstrated. Angel made a brilliant little run to set up the goal and Henry saw him all the way…they’re going to start just destroying people soon.
I’m sorry but as good a player as Angel is, he did not deserve the award. Yes, he scored two goals. *Any* competent striker, let alone someone of Angel’s caliber, should have scored. Henry set up both goals with his passing. The POY award is really getting to be the “offensive-player-with-the-most-stats” award. Kasey Keller should have won it two weeks ago, when Sebastien LeToux received it, for the type of saves he made against the pressure he faced. This award is becoming a joke.
I think that is a deliberate policy, so as not to encourage copycats
Angel fouled Robinson on the first goal. Couldn’t believe the ref missed that call. Must have gotten starry eyed from Henry’s cross.
Sweet. I expect he’ll get some minutes in the next match.
An even more glaring omission is the absence of video footage of the two morons that rushed the field after Houston scored their second goal. Two kids led security on a chase that was every bit as funny as a Benny Hill show. About 5 overweight, fat@ss security guards chasing 2 120 pound teenagers…classic. Ended with one of the kids trying to scale a wall but faceplanting into cement instead.
Unrelated, but I can’t believe that the MLS website doesn’t show the infraction leading up to a PK on their game replays, only the PK itself.
Well, Houston only had 10 men they could have stacked behind the ball as the ref decided that we had one too many on the field with 11.
Red Bulls just sent a text message to season ticket holders that they signed Marquez today.
When Henry Gets out of preseason mode and hits form Redbull will be too much for any feeble Defense in this league. I hope they dont go anti football and starting stacking 10 men behind the ball. Between them two Redubll could have had around 5 goals vs Houstan.
😀
Wow, Angel is 34 and still getting it done. Props to him. I thought he was younger.
He should pass Buddle, they looked like they had great chemistry and it was the first time they’ve taken the field together.
I agree that he will pass up Buddle. LA seem to have hit a wall lately and have found it difficult to score. The chemistry between Henry and Angel will only get better. And with Marquez getting ready to join the team…things are looking good in NY.
I’m scared for Aug 14.
JPA is stoked to be paired with TH14. Think he is going to leave Buddle in the dust.
One of many more to come between the two
