German Bundesliga set to begin

It's been a big year for soccer in Germany — between the nation team's run to the World Cup semifinal, and Bayern Munich's defeat in the Champions League final against Inter Milan, there are plenty of positives ahead of the opening weekend of the 2010-11 Bundesliga campaign. Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg open the season this afternoon (2:30 p.m., ESPN3.com).

Defending champions Bayern will look to stake a claim on a second straight league title, attempting to fight off the valiant attempts of teams such as Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg, to name just a few.

Some of the Bundesliga's brightest talents will look to continue a rise to prominence this year. Bayern's Thomas Mueller, the Young Player and Golden Boot winner at the World Cup, should play a starring role for the Bavarian club, while Dutch winger Eljero Elia is another rising talent to watch out for, playing on the wing for Hamburger SV.

Who do you think will win the Bundesliga? Will you be following the season closely after Germany's World Cup?

  1. +1, anyone remembers back in the day when fox used to show the two best bundesliga games every weekend! But i suppose serie a would draw more than the bundeliga for a tv companys point of view!

  2. I’d be in favor of that — not sure, but I think GolTV has a lot of the Bundesliga rights in the US. But if you get FSC i assume you get Gol, too?

  3. It was amazing when it just started, but there are other (not so legal) streaming sites now that are much crisper and faster. espn3 is still great for reliability, but i think we’ve gotten too much of some good things and now this needs an update.

  4. I’m not sure which I’m enjoying more about this match – soccer without commentary or the fact that DC United hasn’t played this well in years.

  5. Its a free service where you can watch several sports for free from the comfort of your own computer in pretty good quality. You are a huge baby.

  6. HSV walked into a meatgrinder with its horrible choice of managers. Surprising considering the fact that this is a solid club with a great history (only club to have never faced relegation). I expect them to do much better this year.

  7. I just hope Hamburg can finish better than last season. Started off great, but then faded quickly and finished in 7th. Hopefully, with no European play to tire the squad, HSV can shoot for at least a top 3 finish with a chance at Champions League play for next year.

Hopefully Hamburg holds off Juve’s attempts to sign Elia, he’ll be a key addition. I hope Ruud can stay healthy away. Still wished they hadn’t sent Berg to PSV for the a season-long loan. He’s a stud in the making.

  8. This is the year where Germany will take the 4th Champions League spot from Italy. Germany will continue the rise and Italy will have to come to grips that their days as a soccer power are over. The world has changed.

With the big clubs in La Liga and the Epl in so much debt, when the smoke clears in 5 to 10 years the Bundesliga could be the cream of the crop with their solid financials. This will be a great decade for the Bundesliga.

  9. Will Germany be the best league in Europe this year? Some great players made their way to the Bundesliga over the summer. This should be a fun season to watch.
