Two of the top teams in England are battling today as Liverpool takes on Manchester City at City of Manchester Stadium (3pm, ESPN2).
Liverpool will be looking to rebound from a disappointing season-opening draw against Arsenal, while Manchester City will look to overcome its own season-opening draw with a win at home today.
Two players who aren't in action today are Javier Mascherano, who Roy Hodgson has left out due to transfer distractions (Mascherano is heavily linked to a move to Barcelona), and Mario Balotelli, who has a knee injury that will put his Premier League debut on hold.

The new signings that played did well in what is traditionally a big game for CITY, the most pleasing aspect was that the team were comfortable from the start that they would be the better of the two.
oh, and Gerrard might be “washed up” (although I think he’s just frustrated and playing way too deep) but Jamie Carragher, who I love and respect for his service, is definitely over the hill and no longer reliable in the center against first-class opposition. First City goal entirely his failure to mark properly.
Oh, we scousers are in for a long, long year. Why is Ngog on the field? He just gets stripped every time. And where is Maxi Rodriguez? Oh, I forgot–Hodgson wants to replace every Latin/Mediterranean player with East Europeans and Scandinavians, so we can have a slow, interchangeable, compact midfield and finish midtable–wait Roy, you’re not at Fulham anymore! At least (if and when Torres is healthy) play a 4-2-3-1, with Gerrad in the hold and Maxi and Jovanovic wide, so Gerrard isn’t picking the ball up ten yards in his own end.
ManCity were horrible last week except for Hart, and were very good today. Liverpool showed grit and were unlucky to draw w/ Arsenal, but looked very poor today. Relax, it’s only week 2.
That said, if Kuyt and Mash leave, Liverpool are really in trouble. Torres needs time to regain some form, but Hodgson needs to find something from his bench or better find a couple young, inexpensive studs in the next 3 days. Hodgson can find quality from his existing squad-maybe not CL quality, but enough to contend.
I know that I am rushing, but from the start I had my doubt about his hiring. I don’t think he was good enough for Liverpool.
I agree, he’s washed up.
Last year, the world cup (aside from the goal against the States), so far in this two game year. He is not a world class player anymore. Liverpool should have sold him (last chance to get a huge payment for him) or put him out on the wing, as he is no longer a threat from the central midfield. IMO.
Gerrard over-rated? Are you drunk? He has had a bad last year when it comes to Liverpool but he is not over-rated. He will return to top form soon.
“Gerrard” even
After the second game, wow… I think Gerard is the problem, everything goes through him (now) and he can’t link a pass worth a damn. Very over-rated player.
Couldn’t see this time. Last season he wrote “Flop?” on it.
This has looked like a Varsity vs. Junior Varsity game.
Hodgson out
Dalglish in
Could anyone read what Tevez’s shin guard said?
Adam Johnson is a stud. Too bad I hate his team.
5 Englishmen on the pitch for City….and only 3 for Liverpool. Liverpool doesn’t have a Brit on the bench. And….City is STILL winning 🙂
I think Liverpool can solve their problems by subbing Lucas and Torres. Move Gerrard up behind N Gog. Switch Kuyt and Jovanovic. Kuyt’s work ethic and defensive abilities would help neutralize Johnson. Jovanovic is trying to get forward, but Richards is too strong for him, whereas Lescott is just coming back to the first team and hasn’t been tested.
Yeah, the only thing I could think of was ironic cheering for Hicks and Gillett.
* rub in, that is
Maybe to run in the Gillet and Hicks v. Liverpool situation. That’s all that comes to my mind.
Why were the fans chanting “USA USA USA” when Reina was taking the goal kick?
Were Man City supporters chanting USA USA USA right there?
The whole game is going at the speed of turtles. Continental soccer at its worst form.
Torres is not fit. He running at the speed of Blanco and has the first touch of Robbie Findely.
A defesive mistake by Carragher allowed Barry to score for Man City.
Barry scores … even though Liverpool seemed the more dangerous side early on.
Milner and Barry combine for Man City’s first goal. As a Villa supporter, I hope they’re both struck by lightning.
milner is looking like the real deal. far more worth it than robinho
