Salgado loan to Vancouver falls through

Whitecaps_new_logo

Recent MLS signing and U.S. U-20 forward Omar Salgado won't be joining the USSF D-2 version of the Vancouver Whitecaps after all. A few weeks after signing his Generation adidas contract, Salgado was supposed to join the Whitecaps on a three-month loan — essentially an extended tryout period.

But a paperwork problem has undermined that move, and Salgado will look move elsewhere for the time being after spending five days training with the Whitecaps. Sources tell SBI that Portland is a good bet to be his next loan destination.

With the Timbers and Whitecaps holding the first and second picks of the SuperDraft — the specific order of the two sides yet to be determined — there's still a very good chance that he ends up playing for either team next year in MLS.

What do you think about the transfer news? Think Salgado will play in Vancouver or Portland? Or somewhere else?

  1. +1 on the Logo. What a disappointment for a team that has done so much right. Looks like something created by a Human Resources committee for a seminar on environmental diversity.

  2. Thanks jonk for the heads up on the MLS article; Vancouver didn’t even try to explain it.

It does seem a little amatuer hour that no one in VAN/USSF-2/MLS home office knew this would be an issue.

  4. It just says “that Major League Soccer (MLS) has been unable to complete Omar Salgado’s registration.” -Didn’t know it had to do with FIFA as he’s supposed to be going to Portland.

  5. I think he is a good prospect and someone I would want my team to get, but him being the #1 prospect is odd thinking, right?

McInerney was not even close to #1

  6. He is going to be drafted, this loan doesn’t determin where he is going to stay…

besides, we know how the draft works, we don’t who will get drafted when.. remember how Bunbury was supposedly going to be the #1 pick?

These expansion teams are going to want to take someone who they think can help right away, and Salgado is going to be that at 17?

  7. I am sure he knew of the Chivas rules when he started playing for them. They’ve had a ‘Mexicans only’ rule since their European founder founded the team, and made that rule to make it more popular.

  8. He prob didn’t want anything to do with Chivas after they kicked him out for deciding to play for the US instead of Mexico

  9. ha that blows. not only do you lose your star signing, but you will probably lose him to a nearby rival.
anyway still can’t get over how awful that whitecaps logo is.

  10. Why didn’t he just switch from Chivas Guadalajara to Chivas USA in the first place? Don’t understand the need to go to a different club.

  11. Thanks for the explanation. Good to have it in early before too many conspiracy theories about MLS changing rules on the fly start gaining traction.

  12. MLSsoccer has a more thorough explanation of the paperwork issue. He was registered in Mexico and so because he’s under 18 he can only transfer his registration if his family moves to that country — in this case, his family had already moved to the US so he can transfer registration there but not Canada.

Anyway, I wonder if Vancouver would draft him knowing that he can’t officially appear for them until he turns 18…I guess they could loan him out.

  13. Timbers GM Gavin Wilkerson did say on a talk show this week that Salgado was training w/ the Timbers. They also said that they will be signing a player real soon that would have an impact next season in MLS. They’ve had a couple Columbians on trial.
