Seattle Sounders vs. CD Marathon: Your Running Commentary

Sounderslogo Marathon

The final match of the first round of CONCACAF Champions League play gives MLS a shot at going a perfect 4-0 in the first week. The Seattle Sounders have made the long journey to Honduras, where they'll face CD Marathon (10 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel).

Seattle will be a bit short handed, particularly in the midfield as Steve Zakuani, Sanna Nyassi, Brad Evans, Pete Vagenas and Pat Noonan didn't make the trip according to the Seattle Times. A lot will depend on young Colombian Fredy Montero, who has been on an absolute tear in MLS play, as well as strike partner Blaise Nkufo and Alvaro Fernandez.

Some of the big names of Marathon have moved on — the club wasn't represented at the World Cup — but the Estadio Yankel Rosenthal in San Pedro Sula has always been tough for MLS clubs that have made the trip.

If you will be watching tonight's match, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

  1. It’s truly stunning how much playacting affects the game. Not saying the guy in this instance was, but it’s amazing how if you flail around the foul will get called

  2. Yeah these stadiums are very Olympic like, sort of like your old Classic High School stadiums with a rubber or dirt track around them, even for Football but for soccer as well it was much better to sit about a good 10 rows up.

When I was in High School it was only about 5 rows since the front aisle of the stadium in frot of the row A was a good 4 to 5 feet from the level of the playing field.

Plus I’m sure with the design of fences and stuff I’m sure they have the same worries as what happened in Guatemala in 1996 I believe at Costa Rica vs Guatemala 3rd round, meaning the one before the Hexagonal where you get 3 qualifiers and 1 to the South America playoff, they had 83 people die i think on a stampede due to selling extra fake tickets!

  3. First you said it was a goo call, now you claim the call was made because of home field advantage. Choose one or the other.

  4. The Marathon player wrapped his leg around Marshall to get the ball. If Marshall would have just acted like a Marathon player and flailed his arms and rolled about on the pitch for five minutes, the call would have gone the other way.

    Das machts nichts…

Monterrey and Saprissa will beat the Sounders.

  5. The defender didn’t have position, he stuck a leg in. if his hips and shoulders were in front of the defender I would agree with you. But that’s not what happened he stuck a leg out from behind while both players were going for the ball.

  6. I don’t know where you all learned soccer at but that’s a penalty if I ever saw one. The defender got position and was taken down. Not even room for an argument. Please pick another excuse.

  7. 99% is a bit much, lol. I would say more like 2 out of 3 times it isn’t called a PK.
Regardless, Sounders should blame a lack of ideas near goal…not the ref. They had plenty of possession but couldn’t figure out what to do with ball.

  8. Could you call that a PK, yes, but 99% of the time it isn’t called because the forward lunged to get a ball that went right to the keeper. The contact by Marshall didn’t affect the play. He hit him, so I can see why it was called.

How about the no call when the keeper sets the ball down, but picks it right back up after realizing Jaqua was behind him. Would have been indirect from about 4 yards out. That was the bigger miss of the day by the ref.

  9. Lets not get on the ref. I disagree with the ok call but it could have gone either way. Otherwise he’s called the game pretty consistently.

Plus the sounders have played poorly so I don’t have a lot of sympathy.

  10. Marshall hasn’t been playing and looks a little rusty.

Marathon has some speed, but when Nyassi and Zakuani play in Seattle, Sounders should be able to beat their weak defense.

  11. Watching on Galavision, the guy made the comment that it was technically a penalty however many referees wouldn’t have called it. I feel the same…tough break for Seattle, but not necessarily a bad call…just an interpretation thing.

  12. Dude, how is that a penalty? The defender came from behind Marshall. Marshall didn’t even see the guy coming and was just trying to clear the ball. The guy came from his side trying to kick the ball too.

  13. I was all WTF at first too. But seeing the replay Marshall got nothing but leg of offensive player. It’s a penalty any way you look at it. The reason it was a yellow was because he was the last defender on a potential goal scoring opportunity. Letter of the law says it’s a yellow…ref didn’t have much choice in giving the yellow or the penalty.

  14. Actually I was waiting for the replay, but they never showed it. But I saw the replay of the foul called against Sounders. Ever heard of home field advantage, refs are like that. It sucks but its true.

  15. The PK call was spot on. Marshall was slow on the ball and was beat to it by the Marathon player. You can’t kick an opposing player like that and not expect a call by the ref.
Marshall needs to be on the bench if he is going to play that poorly.

  16. How is it terrible? Defender made contact with the offensive player in the penalty area. This is a foul and a penalty kick is taken. The offensive player didnt foul Marshall. I love watching the Sounders play, but that was a foul.

  17. I would understand if he got Marshall with his studs, but he did not even touch him. Marshall just waited too long and put himself in a bad position.

  18. why is that a penalty, and not the similar play earlier? because the earlier play would have been a PK for Seattle, and the official gave the benefit of the doubt to Marathon. not so on this PK, tho

    typical

  19. hahaha He tackled Marshall from behind? what are you smoking, the marathon player came from the side and won the ball. Even if a player doesnt have possession of the ball and gets hit in the penalty area its called a foul and a penalty kick is taken. Read the rules if you dont believe me.

  20. You mean the marathon player who never had possession and tackles Marshall from behind in doing so gets kicked? If your criteria for a yellow card is getting kicked then you must be irate at all the non-calls each game.

  21. Anyone know why there are often about 10 rows empty at the bottom of these Central American stadia? The crowd is a good size and all…is it because those seats are more expensive and people don’t buy them or is it some sort of regulation?

  22. Game goes from good to bad. The sounders have looked slow and some how fail to realize that the ball will slow down when it hits the ground…adjust man…jeeeze=
