The Seattle Sounders head down the West Coast to take on Chivas USA tonight at the Home Depot Center.

The Sounders are red hot with a five game unbeaten largely due to the play of forward Fredy Montero and will look to take points away from Chivas at the Home Depot Center for the first time. Chivas USA is starting to improve their run of form after a poor start of the season, but more work is needed to challenge for a playoff spot.

I will be providing commentary throughout the match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

FINAL – A largely negative match tonight at the Home Depot Center. Both sides had tremendous trouble scoring  in what was a testy match with two red cards being handed out at the end of the match. Chivas USA was largely unable to score, but their defense was able to keep the Sounders impressive attack from providing much of a threat to the net of Zach Thornton. That is all from the Home Depot Center where the score is 0-0. Check back on SBI later tonight for more coverage of this game.

Thank you for following along.

————-

94th Minute – The Final whistle is blown 0-0 is the score.

———–

92nd Minute – This match has not offered anything in the way of scoring, but it has been interesting with its testiness. Trujillo and Gonzalez are both sent back to the dressing rooms with red cards.

———-

91st Minute – BIG FOUL by Trujillo on Alonso. A huge scuffle afterward. That seems to have gotten the crowd into it. No card yet.

————

90th Minute – Maldonado fires the free kick into the wall and the Sounders earn possession. Two minutes of stoppage time.

————

89th Minute – The Sounders earn a late corner, but Chivas clears pushing up field. Parke picks up a yellow after a foul on Braun earning a free kick from about 30 yards out.

————-

88th Minute – Neither team offering anything in the way of scoring right now. This has truly been a stalemate, in every sense of the word.

————–

86th Minute – Sounders make their final sub, Montero comes out ending his recent scoring streak (earning a goal or assist  in every game since the World Cup break) as Nate Jaqua comes on to replace him

————

81st Minute – Seattle bring on Roger Levesque to replace Sanna Nyassi.

———–

79th Minute – CHIVAS USA SUB: Jesus Padilla enters the match for Alan Gordon. Decent debut by the forward. Not good, not bad, but decent.

———–

78th Minute – Foul on Alonso on Gordon. The forward has not been helped the Rojiblancos with his finishing, but he has drawn a number of fouls in this match. Play resumes and Chivas earn a corner that Seattle clears.

————

75th Minute – Gordon collides with Keller going for the ball. Keller goes down for a bit, but eventually rises. Could that be pay back after the last collision?

———–

74th Minute – Alonso plays a nice ball to Montano, but he is ruled offside on the run. A close call right there.

————-

72nd Minute – Gordon with yet another chance, but the shot goes just wide. A decent debut so far for the ex-LA Galaxy forward, but he should have something from this debut if his finishing wasn't poor.

————-

70th Minute – A foul by Chivas USA earns a dangerous free kick for the Sounders. Montero takes the effort but it is straight at Thornton.

————

68th Minute – SAVE KELLER! Nagamura breaks free of the Sounders defense, but Keller comes up big and makes a key save to keep the game level. The Sounders are lucky not to be down right now.

————

67th Minute – SAVE KELLER! Gordon fires a shot that goes into the chest of Keller. He should have done better there as Chivas USA is really opening up the game now. Alvaro Fernandez is coming out of the match for Miguel Montano.

———–

64th Minute – JUST WIDE! Maldonado with a shot that just misses the net of Kasey Keller. Seattle getting ready to bring in Miguel Montano.

———–

61st Minute –  OFF THE POST! Nyassi's header goes off the post. He received a perfect ball from Nfuko, but the header goes just off the left post. The Gambian should have scored there.

————-

58th Minute – MISS! Nagamura fires a pass down the middle that a sliding Gordon can not reach. The ball goes through to Maldonado who also misses. Poor finishing from Chivas USA's newest addition.

————-

54th Minute – Sloppy bit of play from Chivas who are finding space deep in the Sounders defense, but so far look incapable of scoring.

————

51st Minute – One sub did occur at the half for the Rojiblancos, Osael Romero was pulled for Giancarlo Maldonado.

————–

50th Minute – Braun called offsides for the third time today. The forward is not having the best of days so far tonight, but not yet up to the magnitude of their last match against Toronto.

————-

46th Minute – Back underway here at the Home Depot Center.

————–

HALFTIME – Neither team looking very threatening right now in a half that was marred by several delays including a six minute delay after a Montero collision with Zach Thornton knocked out the Chivas USA goalkeeper's contacts. Expect to see Jesus Padilla coming in soon as the Rojiblancos have provided little so far in the opening 45.

————-

45th Minute + 3 – The Sounders earn the corner, but Chivas with the clearance as the whistle is blown. End of the first half.

———–

45th Minute – Three minutes of stoppage time. Some in the press box calling for six.

———-

44th Minute – Finally after a delay, we're back. No subs made by either team.

———-

42nd Minute – Correction, he has been added to the active roster as of yesterday. Expect to see him crack the gameday roster shortly.

————

41st Minute – As we wait, for those asking about Sal Zizzo, head coach Martin Vasquez stated when he was brought in that he would have time to get up to fitness. With the recent loans that the club has made, I would expect him to be added to the 23 man roster shortly.

————

39th Minute – Chivas USA has league pool goalkeeper Kevin Guppy on the bench while the Sounders have Nate Jaqua, Mike Seamon and Roger Levesque up to potentially replace Montero who has only now just risen from the field.

———–

38th Minute – The sounders earn a free kick and Zach Thornton and Fredy Montero are on the ground after colliding while going for the ball. Both remain on the ground.

————–

36th Minute – The corner goes aray for the Sounders as we learn that Ante Jazic was removed due to flu like symptoms. It would explain why the coaching staff was handing tablets during the match.

————

34th Minute – SIDE NETTING! Montero hits the side netting on a shot. Corner for the Sounders.

————-

33rd Minute – With his inclusion in the match, Jonathan Bornstein has now tied Sacha Kljestan's record of 114 games played for Chivas USA. A club record.

————-

32nd Minute – OUCH! Sanna Nyassi with a kick straight to the face of Justin Braun. Braun goes down, but there is no card.

———–

31st Minute – On the play prior to the substitution, it appeared that Mariano Trujillo also picked up a knock, but the captain will continue to play.

————

30th Minute – CHIVAS USA SUB: Jonathan Bornstein in for Ante Jazic.

———–

29th Minute – It looks like Ante Jazic is not long for this game. He is sitting back deep and Jonathan Bornstein is getting ready to come in.

———–

27th Minute – Chivas USA earns the corner, but Nkufo heads it out of danger.

———–

24th Minute – Delgado with a diving tackle in midfield. He plays it to Braun, but the striker loses it to Ianni. Braun has not been too active in this first half with Gordon looking far more dangerous.

———–

21st Minute – The game has settled at the moment with the Sounders finding themselves unable to break the pressure of Chivas USA. Interesting side note, Alan Gordon is wearing number 16, which was just recently vacated by Sacha Kljestan.

————-

16th Minute – The match is the first start for the Sounders Uruguayan International Alvaro Fernandez. He's playing on the left and just behind Montero.

———–

14th Minute – Espinosa loses the ball in midfield after a poor dump off pass to Jazic and Nyassi goes off to the races, but Nagamura stops the Seattle attack before they challenge Thornton's net.

———–

8th Minute – Sounders earn a corner, but Sturgis heads it out of bounds. Throw in for the Sounders.

———–

7th Minute – Chivas USA controlling possession right now and earn a corner to the right of Kasey Keller.

————-

5th Minute – Alonso with a foul on Braun that forces a dangerous free kick from about 25 yards out.

————-

3rd Minute – It appears that Vasquez is giving Bornstein some rest after playing the whole match against Brazil midweek.

————–

1st Minute – And we're off. Chivas is attacking to the left of your screen.

————-

PREGAME: Alan Gordon is starting for Chivas USA. Can't say that I thought I would ever say that.

  1. “Some people say Alex Prus is the best American referee…”

No one who knows refereeing says that. You’re listening to idiots.

  2. Some people say Alex Prus is the best American referre, but his performance tonight was awful.

1.) He let that game get way too physical. So many dangerous challenges that should clearly have been fouls were let go going both ways. The quality suffers when you let players mug each other all day. Skill players can’t play and a garbage game results. Plus things get overheated between players (see 3 below).

2.) Why let Zach Thornton fuss with his contact lense for 7 minutes on the pitch – and then only add 3 minutes to the first half? Usher the dude off. Or OK – if you’re going to give leeway for a goalkeeper at least put the stoppage time back.

3.) Frustration mounts from an overly physical match and Trujillo throws two punches/elbows at Gonzalez. No question Trujillo deserves a red here. (Good he got one.) But a red for Gonzalez is absolutely rediculous. All he did was body up physically on Trujillo, which to that point hadn’t even been a foul all game. Gonzalez didn’t even retaliate or get angry. Alonso rushed over to protect his teamate – but didn’t raise his arms or push. I don’t care if Prus confers with the fourth referee (again a stoppage of several minutes and no time put back on the clock) – he should have made a better interpretation of that incident.

4.) The smug shite-eating grin on Prus’s face during that exchange was naseauting. Take it seriously you piece of shite. It’s not funny when a player decks another player and there’s practically a mele on the field. Your f’ing cavalier attitude was totally inappropriate. You should be commanding respect – not trying to be all buddy-buddy mr. smooth talk with the players.

I really dislike Prus after watching this performance, and if he’s the best American referree we’ve got serious problems, and should be totally happy and content that no American referees a World Cup match.

  3. I think what happened is Thornton thought Montero was a talking Cheeseburger in a Sounders jersey, kinda like on those deserted island cartoons and went for him. Decent game plan to rid the game of one of the hottest players in the MLS right now.

  4. Wow. I wonder if the Bornstein sub was already in the game plan. It doesn’t sound like the Chivas defense was doing horribly.
