Serie A opening weekend approaches

SerieAlogo
This weekend, another major European league is set to open its doors, as the action in Serie A begins on Saturday.

Recently it's been all about Inter — the prestigious club from Milan swept the silverware last year, walking away with three trophies, including the league title, Coppa Italia and the Champions League. The defending champions have swapped in Rafa Benitez for Jose Mourinho, and sent hulking striker Mario Balotelli on his way to England.

But Wesley Sneijder and Diego Milito are back and will look to fend off the challenges from the Serie A rivals hoping to mount a title challenge. AS Roma and AC Milan came closest to Inter last year, finishing second and third respectively, while Juventus looks to bounce back after finishing in a disappointing seventh place.

They'll all be chasing Inter, a club in search of their sixth straight Serie A title.

What team will win Serie A? Think Rafa Benitez can get the job done? Can Juventus bounce back?

  1. Roma supporter here as well – really had no idea we were so well represented on these boards. I’m interested to see how Simplicio and Adriano are incorporated into the team. The team certainly could have used some younger blood this offseason, and I was disappointed to have let Motta go (even more disappointed to see him end up with Juve). I’m hoping a sale of the team will finally go through – hopefully to an owner that is willing to spend wisely on some younger talent.

  2. how in the world has there been no talk of this possible deal of Ibrahimovic to Milan? This would be huge if either he or Robinho comes.I prefer Ibra since hes already proven himself in Serie A and also because he hasnt been known to be a huge flake and troublemaker like Robinho has. They still need some defense but sometimes the best defense is a great offense and with Dinho,Pato and either Ibra or Robinho thats what You would have!!!

  4. Roma fan here as well! Glad to see so much support for the lupi on this board…I agree with you Stephen that it is hard to predict how the season will go. It is essentially the same side as last year (minus Burdisso) just one year older. I’m hoping Mexes can regain his form from a couple of years ago. I also think this could be a breakout year for Menez…he showed very well in the last half of the season and has been getting plenty of minutes in the preseason.

  5. Roma fan here. Just like last season, I have no idea how their new campaign will turn out. It is so difficult to say. They are an old squad, can they keep up a high tempo pace with Inter all season? Will Adriano turn into the signing of the summer or will he fall back to his old ways? Will Totti stay healthy for any significant stretch? Can the defense prevent goals without going in, especially if we can’t sign Burdisso? Can Ranieri shake off his second best status?

Roma could win the scuddetto or they could finish like 6th. I really have no idea.
