Afternoon Ticker: Hartman to miss 2-3 weeks (Henry fined), Nkufo wins award and more

Kevin Hartman (ISIphotos.com)

FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman will miss two to three weeks with the sprained MCL he suffered in last week's run-in with New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry.

Hartman was forced to leave at halftime of the Red Bulls-FC Dallas match last Thursday after a ball kicked by Henry jarred Hartman's leg, spraining his MCL in the process. The veteran goalkeeper is enjoying a career year, but will now miss the remainder of the month. Dario Sala will take over in his absence.

While it still won't sit well with Dallas fans, the news could have been much worse for Hartman, who should be back in time for the MLS playoffs, which FC Dallas is on the verge of qualifying for.

(UPDATE) Henry was fined $2000 by MLS for the incident, but he was not suspended. The fine was announced on Monday afternoon, and the lack of a suspension means Henry will play for New York against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday.

Here are some other soccer news items from Monday:

Nkufo named MLS Player of the Week

Seattle Sounders forward Blaise Nkufo was named MLS Player of the Week on Monday for his hat-trick performance in Seattle's 4-0 thrashing of the Columbus Crew.

Nkufo beat out a strong field of candidates that included Toronto's Dwayne DeRosario, Los Angeles' Landon Donovan and FC Dallas' Eric Alexander.

Nkufo scored his first three goals for Seattle since joining the Sounders from Dutch champions FC Twente this summer.

Messi to miss two weeks

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is set to miss two weeks with ligament damage in his right ankle suffered during Sunday's 2-1 win vs. Atletico Madrid.

Messi was fouled late in the match by Atletico Madrid defender Thomas Ujfalusi, who was issued a straight red card for the offense.

What do you think of these developments. Glad to hear Hartman will be back this season? Agree with the pick of Nkufo as player of the week? Think Ujfalusi should face a lengthy ban for his awful challenge on Messi?

  1. Hey Rob if Henry broke no rules then why fine him $2,000?!?!…which FWIW is a joke for the kind of money he earns…probally carries that much around in his pockets…MLS comes off looking real bad here and does nothing to grow the sport in the USA….they’ve just told the world that star players get special treatment…

  2. Ok let me spell this out easy for all of you that think Henry should be suspended.

First Hartman admitted he stepped into the ball to block Henry, so though unfortunate he was also to blame for the injury.

What did Henry do that breaks a rule, as the ref will give 30 seconds for a celebration, see pile up of US players in the Algeria game.

Believe it or not kicking a ball after a goal is very common in professional football. It happens anywhere for right after the goal to a few seconds after. This is not the only time this happens.

Finally if Dallas “fans” put as much into complaining and whining about Henry as they did in effort to support their team, Dallas would be the highest earner of any MLS team.

  3. MLS would never suspend Henry before the premier match against LA. The league needs this match up to be exciting for obvious reasons. It’s too bad because that was uncalled for by Henry and he should have been no where near the ball. At least a one game suspension or a fine that is far more severe should have been implemented. Hartman is a major piece in the puzzle for FC Dallas and this ordeal could seriously hamper their season.

  4. you spelled y’all wrong. the apostrophe goes where you take out letters.

And yes, I think it’s pretty clear Shea deserves the extra game he got. If not for the challenge itself, then the temper tantrum he threw after he got shown the red card

  5. Chris Albright wont be out for 2-3 weeks like Hartman . Albright just needed a little bit of wadder to cure his feelings and he was back on da field.

  6. Agreed… or if would have been a different player that hurt Hartman, I’m sure there would have been a more severe punishment. If you look at the Video Hartman and a defender are in front of the Goal, “How did Henry want to smash the ball back into the goal unless he was intentionally trying to smash it through the FCD players” Although it looked like he was just trying to kick it away into the stands which its an automatic yellow card for time wasting and would have resulted in a red card, regardless of not cautioning Henry.. the fault lies with the referee, Hyndman said it best “the referee didn’t really have the courage to make the call”

  7. Actually, Shea did get suspended a second game which he deserved. Henry deserves at least a game. Stupid, inadvertent or not he caused a player to miss 3 and 1/2 game.

  8. Don’t forget he also went studs up to the back of Albright’s legs. Then screamed at the line judge, was shown a red, then after a heated exchange with another player, came back and shoved the line judge. He got lucky only getting an extra game and $750.00.

  9. FA just fined Wagner 8,000 pounds for berating the refs. A larger fine then 2000 bucks, but not when you take the vast amount of money involved in the PL. League fines ( any league ) are used more as a demonstrative tool. It’s like saying “hey we did something”. The people who receive them are rarely ever hurting for the paltry sum of the fine.

  10. Yeah I know like Becks will never get suspended….

Wait a tick did he not get a Red Card last year… Hmm and he at that time was the money maker for MLS….

Go back to your dark room and come back with the next great American soccer conspiracy.

  11. Re: N’Kufo Player of the week award:

Can I do my “told-ya-so” dance?

I just hope this is the beginning of some offensive consistency for the Sounders. If this is not simply a one-off and N’Kufo has joined the party, Seattle suddenly becomes very dangerous down the stretch.

  12. Shea got the ball… And left the ground with both his feet, with his cleats showing, and with clear recklessness. Sorry to break your blind heart.

It could have ended far worse.

  13. Sorry to break your blind heart but Shea got the ball. Replay clearly shows it was a clean challenge. Plus, Albright has made a career out of diving and cheating.

  14. Actually, since the ref sent Brek off he will miss the next match, but thanks for trying to make sense. Do try harder next time though.

  15. After the play was dead? Henry deserved to sit a game and I am sure that if he had been hurt by someone in a dead ball situation it would merit a much different reaction from MLS.

I think your analysis is flawed and I am really looking forward to USSF’s Week in Review this week.

  16. There are certain players in this league that will never get suspended…unless they do something like bring a gun into the locker room. Double standard.

  17. Instead of “Player of the Week”, they should really rename the award the “Top Scorer of the Week”. When has a top goal scorer not won?

Sorry Sounder142…that hope will not happen!

  19. If “ya’ll in Dallas” want Henry suspended for an inadvertant albeit stupid play, do you Dallas fans also think Brek Shea should be suspended even longer for his very reckless tackle on Chris Albright?

  20. I thought the card for Ujfalusi was a second yellow?

(SBI-Ujfalusi had a yellow earlier but the ref gave him the straight red for that challenge. Never showed the second yellow, at least that’s how it looked in TV.)
