Altidore starts, plays 90 in Europa League loss to Dinamo Zagreb

Jozy Altidore started and played 90 minutes for Villarreal in their 2-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in Europa League action in Croatia.

Altidore didn't have any clear-cut scoring chances, but he did draw a handful of free kicks and was one of Villarreal's more active players.

What did you think of Altidore's performance today? Encouraged by him getting a Europa League start on the road? Eager to see him get some minutes in La Liga action?

  1. Only saw the second half, but he who cannot be named gave the ball away easily on numerous occasions, including a lazy give away that was responsible for the second goal. Josy was the better forward in the second half (although I’ll admit comments about Voldemorts better off the ball movement are true)

  2. He has lazy games, as does everyone (Clint Dempsey circa 2008/2009 World Cup Qualifying/early Confed Cup games, anyone?) but it’s obvious he’s capable of turning it on (Chelsea EPL game last year, the Costa Rica game right after Davies’s accident, Spain game, numerous other occasions.)

He’s 20, and the only way you learn how to play more consistently well in games is to play in games more often. Which, hopefully, he’ll get to do.

And yes, strikers should score, but the misguided soul above who stated that if he didn’t score there’s nothing to praise him for? Dude. Come on. There’s not finishing sitters to not score, and there’s not getting chances or service to score. If he’s creating chances for himself or others, the goals will come, either for him or his team. That’s all that matters.

  3. a smart soccer player, a student of the game, would know about off the ball runs and how and when to do them from his U-15 travel soccer team in the united states. he’s a luddite this altidore. never been a fan because he’s as lazy a soccer player as they come. and his conditioning is horrible too. 1 long run and he’s incapable of a burst of speed the rest of the game and just sits while his midfielders bust their butts.

  4. I didn’t say that to denigrate Altidore, I just don’t think he’s the kind of striker that scores twenty-thirty goals a year. He’s a physical, target striker, not a goal-poacher. He’s in the Brian McBride mold, not the Michael Owen.

Do you think I was knocking him? On the contrary, my comment was aimed at those who inevitably would comment complaining about the lack of goals. My point is that he can be a good, productive player without racking up lots of goals. I don’t mean to say that he’s incapable of scoring twenty goals, but rather that that just isn’t his style. I see him as a fourteen-eighteen goal a year guy, if and when he reaches his potential.

  5. If you watched the game, Jozy was clearly one of the few Villarreal players who earned their plane ticket back to Spain today.

Of course Jozy must get better and must fight harder for every inch he gets every day, if he’s to start in Europe on a regular basis.
