Berbatov’s wonder goal

Dimitar Berbatov 1 (ISIphotos.com)

In case you missed it, Dimitar Berbatov scored one of the better goals you'll ever see this past Sunday against Liverpool. We've seen bicycle kicks before, but scoring one in a Manchester United-Liverpool clash, and doing it with the class Berbatov showed is extra special.

here is the goal:

What did you think of the goal? Best you've seen in a while?

  1. Nice goal, but it’s not a bicycle kick. To be a bike, the non-kicking foot has to leave the ground first, then the kicking foot flies up while the non-kicking foot compensates down, so the legs look like they are pumping the pedals of a bicycle. Just because you pop the ball backwards doesn’t make a kick a bicycle kick.

  2. lucky goal. not even a bicycle kick…more like “i’m falling backward so i’ll kick it towards goal and hope for the best”. kind of ugly actually

  3. Rivaldo’s bike goal was at the end of a game with Valencia, at the end of the season, with a CL spot on the line. Nonetheless, the weird pace to the underside of the crossbar makes Berbatov’s goal one to remember.

  4. Carlos Ruiz’s bike for Dallas a few years ago was better than this one. For all the hype, it’s not that great of a goal. Although it was against Liverpool, so I’ll take it.

  5. did anyone see the ridiculous volley in one of the Serie A games? I can’t remember who it was or what teams were playing, but it was even better than this, in my opinion.

  6. Amazing job to play it off his hip the way he did. A bicycle kick goal is a bicycle kick goal (they’re all good), but the touch to control it with his hip is what really makes it for me.

And an AMAZING pass from Flecther to start the play. Great vision, but it’s unfortunately lost in Berbatov’s bit of magic.

  7. This is Sir Alex’s answer to his Berbotov dilema…clearly he shoots better with his back to the goal than facing it…

  8. Why is everybody on this goals balls? I don’t think it was even near the goal of the season so far. It was good, not great, and it wasn’t a bike.

  9. A great goal, as are so many of Berbatov’s.

But a better bike is Marcelo Balboa’s in MLS in 2000. A full-flight cross Balboa got airborne for, and he made it look easy.

  10. The only thing really special about this goal was the fact that Berbatov played himself the ball before kicking it. It was an overhead kick, not a bicycle kick (one foot was still on the ground). Therefore, it “degree of difficulty” and total style points are lower. Rating – 8.2/10

  11. great goal, but i consider a bicycle kick to be one where you are in the air while you strike the ball, on his, it was more like a lob-bike kick. I still couldn’t do it though…

  12. Very true. I remember watching that game and being so disappointed because he would have gotten so much props for that goal had it gone in. Instead, most people don’t even know it ever happened. Inches away from a wonder goal he’d never forget.

  13. Here is how ESPN does their top 10 (highest to lowest):

    1) Any dunk automatically gets into the top 5.

    2) Any extra innings game winning hit. If it is a homerun, it’s automatically top 2.

    3) Any football play over 15 yards. Extra points if clip involves Tom Brady’s Bieber hair.

    4) EPL goal of the year (usually with scorer’s name mispronounced).

    5) Cute video of squirrel waterskiing.

  16. Very awesome goal. Ben Arfa also had a pretty sick strike in the Newcastle/Everton tilt. Tim Howard didn’t even have a chance on that ball.
