CONCACAF Champions League: Your Running Commentary

CONCACAFlogo

The Columbus Crew can make some serious headway in reaching the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals in its Group B match against Santos Laguna (8 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel).

Columbus trails Santos by one point in the group, and both have created separation from third-place Municipal and fourth-place Joe Public. With a victory at Crew Stadium, the Major League Soccer side would take control of the group and put itself in a very advantageous spot.

Toronto FC is in a less favorable position, facing Cruz Azul (10 p.m., FSC) and needing a win in Mexico – which would be a first in the CCL for an MLS side – to keep pace in Group A. In order to do so, the Reds will have to find a way to contain Cruz Azul striker Javier Orozco, who has scored 10 goals in four Champions League matches (qualifiers included).

If you will be watching either or both of these matches, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action!

  1. Toronto brings their anti-football and you all are complaining about a horn? Get real. The only thing that makes this game hard to watch is Toronto’s total lack of abilities and the balls to come out and play football.

  2. Toronto are acting like a bunch of thugs and bush league players.

I would have red carded that moron refusing to leave the field of play, that’s out of control.

  3. The difference in skills between CA and TFC is beyond embarrassing. When are MLS teams going to understand that big, fast and strong does not equal football players?

  4. They’ve had that foghorn at Cruz Azul’s stadium for several years. Don’t know if its brought by fans or a permanent part of their stadium sound system. But it is annoying.

  5. That horn cannot be legal. It just seems so unsporting. TFC is playing like Arabe Unido, lots of time wasting…. well kinda, at least they aren’t diving and acting like they’ve been hit by a sniper. I expect more class from an MLS team

  6. As an aside, the ref has been spot on tonight. For all the abuse heaped on the CCL officials, in this one, they have been very sharp on some close calls. Letting the game run for the most part too which is generally desirable.

  7. The problem for TFC has been that their first touch has been truly awful. That ain’t the crowd, the smog, or anything other than lack of skill under pressure.

The other problem for TFC is that friggin horn.

  8. Dude it’s Aden, pathetic to him is usually decent to everyone else… Toronto without a head coach in Mexico city…. Hmmm besides the injuries they look as good as expected.

  9. And ANOTHER injury to TFC. Tough times using two in the first 29 minutes.

And Toronto isn’t great but pathetic is tough…Cruz Azul came into this game really hot.

  10. Yeah, the poor attendance is a drag. Then again, take a look at Cruz Azul’s stadium tonight. Midweek is tough for group stage CCL games.

I’ll be heading back for work to Ohio right after the MLS playoffs…..sigh.

  11. Mig,

That is the story of my life, though it sounds like you are there more often than me. As an Ohioan who doesn’t live there anymore, I seem to have the worst luck getting to games. It makes me especially mad after looking at so many empty seats.

  12. LOL, yeah, I had forgotten about that one too. So three home games.

I’m not a Crew fan other than they are always field a good product and I spent enough time with Crew fans there to appreciate their fervor.

    Cheers!

  13. Huh? I don’t see how it was random. It was certainly as well deserved as the goal Santos had 3 minutes into stoppage time in the first match.

  14. Good on the Crew. Figures I just left Columbus last week and missed two games I could have went to see. I’ve been out and back there all year and have had almost no overlap with their home games.

  15. Santos has played much better the second half. Chad Marshall just took a boot to the face, and was down for about 2 minutes before being walked off the field.

  16. Sounders fan here, rooting for the Crew tonight. I think they are MLS’ best hope in this competition and I’d love to see them do well.
