Morales suspended for kneeing Alonso

Real Salt Lake midfielder Javier Morales is known for his playmaking ability and creativity, but it was his mixed martial arts skills that got him into a bit of trouble.

Morales was issued a one-match suspension on Monday for delivering a knee to the groin of Seattle Sounders midfielder during their match last Thursday. Alonso had just fouled Morales when the two had words before Morales struck Alonso with his knee.

Morales will now be suspended for RSL's upcoming match on Saturday against the Chicago Fire. His absence will be a blessing for a Fire team looking to halt a five-match winless skid.

What do you think of the suspension? Think it should have been longer? Still see RSL beating Chicago without Morales?

  1. It fairly obvious that most of you did not watch the game. Alonso was constantly fouling morales without any consequence. I would not have blamed Morales for punching Alonso let alone just kneeing him.

Being someone that plays defense on the field I understand that defensive midfielders need to be physical, and I actually like watching that kind of soccer. But the referees need to be able to keep players from getting too physical. A 1 game suspension is perfectly sufficient in this case.

  2. but his excessive influence extended into the 70s, and by extension the partying ways of the Cosmos in the Studio 54 days had a large part to play in the mismanagement of the NASL….which shadows every financial decision of MLS. Ok, so maybe that was a stretch…on my part and on the part of that documentary on the Cosmos.

  3. Some good numbers there and I think you’re correct. Seattle has given up 4 PKs and earned only 1. My admittedly sarcastic point was that the refs/league aren’t exactly going out of their way to assist the Sounders, which was the misguided point Chad was making.

  4. Ironically, I think Seattle needs Chicago to Lose more than RSL to Lose or Draw, so suspending Morales against Chicago for a foul committed against Alonso and Seattle could be an indirect liability for SEA.

  5. I didn’t see the incident, but if it’s violent conduct that they’re suspending him for how is that only 1 game? Shouldn’t violent conduct be at least 2, if not 3 games?

  6. I ko wyou were being sarcastic, but it still made me go out and look at MLS stats for PKS. One thing that stands out is that MLS refs don’t like to call PK’s according to their site 42 PKs have been called in 372 games. 5 teams have had one or less called in their favor. The team (Dallas) with the longest unbeaten streak may have been helped by 6 pk attempts.

the one stat they don’t have is pk’s against

Being a seattle fan I can recall 4 against Dallas(Terry Vaughn still hasn’t done another seattle game), Chicago, RSL, and I think Philly.

I am not sure what this means other than I was curious

  7. I’m not trying to suspend anyone or anything, but just for the sake of knowing, Jimi Hendrix’s music is LARGELY from the 1960’s, since he died in the exact year of 1970. Just FYI…not trying to stir the pot or anything, everyone’s argument still stands

  8. Yeah, Seattle gets all the breaks. Look at the way MLS have helped them to the glamorous 8th playoff spot. And man, all those PK’s awarded this season. Oh sorry, that was 1 PK this season.

Oh, and of course the way the ref immediately called the foul on Morales, gave him a red card and allowed Seattle a man advantage that they parlayed into a 1-0 victory over RSL.

    Moron.

  9. i’d be curious to know what the league will do about whatever alonso did to deserve the knee…but he plays for seattle so mls won’t do anything…

  10. you should be suspended since every single move MLS has made for most of its existence has been in relation to the 70s, and to the perceived excesses of that decade (soccer and jimi hendrix among them). Guys like Morales wouldnt even be in the league, at this point in the season, if that referencing of the 70s did not dominate MLS’s pocketbook.

  11. Sometimes it takes this type of thing to get a competitor like Morales to rest a match. With a very crowded upcoming ccl and MLS schedule this suspension could be a blessing in disquise for Morales and RSL.

  12. Ives should suspend you from this blog for having a name like Hendrix and ragging on Beckermans’ dreads. Jimi Hendrix would have loved Beckermans’ hair. I guess it could be worse if your name was Marley.

  13. I am little surprised Javier Morales hasn’t been suspended via red card much more. Every time I have seen him play I have seen his creativity but I have also seen his dirty play. He’s pretty slick in both good and bad ways.

  14. It will hurt RSL but I see them winning and at worse drawing (hopefully not again). I watched the RSL Sounders game and completely missed the knee to the crotch on Alonso. Morales must have got a talking to by Jason Kries. Kries hates boneheaded mistakes like that. RSL is still much better than Nery and Co. Final score 1-0 RSL.
