Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

If you didn't see enough of Neymar terrorizing American defenders in last month's USA-Brazil friendly, you'll have your chance to watch him today as Santos takes on Flamengo in one of the day's few options for socccer on TV.

Neymar's club isn't dominating quite as much as it did last season, but the club is still one you should watch every chance you get (even after losing Ganso to an injury). Flamengo isn't quite as star-studded as Santos, but Vagner Love is always good for a few special plays.

Today's MLS schedule consists of the Houston Dynamo playing host to the San Jose Earthquakes. The team formerly known as the Earthquakes before moving to Houston is in an unfamiliar role, reduced to playing spoiler to a San Jose team fighting for a playoff spot.

If you will be watching any of today's action, or want to discuss last night's action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Today's TV schedule is after the jump):

  1. the playoff order is definitely a long way from settled and the West is again stronger this year. With the Quakes win in Houstion tonite, they’re tied for the 7th spot, 5 pts clear of KC & Toronto, and have a game(or two)in hand on everybody ahead of them. Hopefully they get some defenders back from injury in time for the playoffs. Geovanni was great for us tonite w/ a goal and assist in 80 minutes played.

  2. Additionally, the Sounders would have the 3rd seed in the East. So if they pushed and got a couple more points they’d leapfrog the Rapids. But if they don’t, they’ll not only be in the presumably weaker side of the bracket but also have a one-off conference championship game if they win in the first round and the 4th seed in the East beats the 1st seed. While Colorado would have no possibility of anything at home except the one leg of the first round.
Obviously, which particular teams are in which position could change.

  3. So if MLS standings stay the way they are, San Jose will be the 4th seed in the East because they’re 8th overall, while the Rapids’ reward for finishing 6th overall and 4th in the West will be the 4th seed in the West (and stronger) side of the bracket. Each would have one home game in the first round and then no home games after that. This nonsense format has got to be tweaked.

  4. i am with you, but its kind of ridiculous to dismiss someone who could have potentially played for the US who’s has good as Movsisyan.

  5. get into women’s soccer, get into college soccer. Just saw 6 goals in the Indiana – UCLA match…plus you see next year’s MLS draft picks.

  6. It’s tough losing holden and clark, then cameron going down through injury. That’s the spine of the team, it will take at least a season to rebuild. I like the way they play though, very honest and aggressive. It’s always a great game between them and the quakes though, probably the matchup of the weekend.

  7. I dunno, he seems to genuinely appreciate the glory of international success. He looked up to Maradona and the like, and they always performed internationally. I don’t know that he would give up the chance to play in another world cup.

  8. I’m not sure I would put him in the “best uncapped US attacker” category, mainly because he’s not even a US citizen.

  9. Best…and most predictable. between those two leagues we now have 4 options on who will win Manchester United / Chelsea and Barca/Madrid. Best definitely does not equal most exciting. Try the Bundesliga if you actually care about COMPETITION between league teams…It might get hard though, no Messi or Rooney pummeling on teams with no chance to win the league.

  10. I agree Dempsey will probably catch the “England NT” and decide to either play like crap for the NT or not play at all. I’m sure once he heads to a Everton or AV or Hamburg or Schalke, he’ll retire. So 2012, 2013.

  11. Both. They are a cult team with a large following, and Cory Gibbs made his reputation as a young player there. (That is, his reputation for being a good defender, not his reputation for fragility.)

  12. Keepers have the longest careers of any players, so I doubt that Howard will be done by then. And Donovan is a bit of a freek and super fit – I’d bet cash money he’ll still be starting, altough it may be a a withdrawn forward. For some reason I have a hunch that if Dempsey moves to a bigger club, he may retire from international play.

I agree about the 4-5-1, but I think it will be more of a 4-2-3-1. Could suit us well

  13. I didn’t see any mention of this elsewhere so thought I’d post it. Yura Movsisyan played for Armenia in a Euro qualifier, so he’s officially out of the US pool.

  14. hm I’ve seen a lot of St Pauli fans on this board, did an American play for them or are they just sort of a ‘cult’ team that a lot of people follow? Just curious

  15. A better question would be, will either of Howard, Donovan or Dempsey be starting in the WC? Guzan should have replaced Howard by than and I have this feeling Dempsey will be focusing on his club by than.

the Gold Cup may be the last time we see the likes of Boca, Cherundolo, Clark. I doubt Buddle or Gomez last more than a year with a possible return of Davies and several young guys being called up. Plus note we may play a new 4-5-1.

  16. I just spent the morning watching matches of our WC journey.

Where will this cup hold up compared to the rest? The world has recognized our potential and know the names of our best- ie Howard, Donovan, Dempsey.

  17. Devoid of soccer makes me bored. I began following the USMNT and soccer in general back in summer 07 and it’s really changed my life a great degree. I hate when there is no professional soccer matches, (okay I know MLS but I really only follow the PL and La Liga)
