Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

More Carling Cup action highlights a busy mid-week slate of European soccer for Wednesday afternoon. Newcastle takes on Chelsea, while Aston Villa hosts Blackburn Rovers in the higher profile meetings of the day's competition.

Villa's match will provide a chance for seldom-used U.S. goalie Brad Guzan to spell Brad Friedel in the Villa goal. Guzan has previously featured in Cup competitions in the past, and is in the starting lineup today against Blackburn. Joining Guzan in a rare first-team appearance is American defender Eric Lichaj.

Action from the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga is also on the slate, with AC Milan attempting to put a good run of form together against Lazio, while Inter hosts Bari.

If you will be watching any or all of Wednesday's matches either on television or Internet feed, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions or play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action.

  1. With all the EPL upsets today, I truly believe Aston Villa will go deep into the Carling Cup competition, which is great news for Guzan as he can show his talents and play some (somewhat) meaningful games. Ditto that for the FA cup.

  2. In the biggest upset of the Carling Cup, Northampton Town of League 2 beat Liverpool on penalties. Big Surprise to Liverpool fans. I’m surprised that Northhampton Town has an American on its roster — 23 year-old Sebastian Harris from Michigan. Jay Demirit II?? Somebody call Bob Bradley!! 😉

  3. Freidel is an older keeper remains great but chances are when he finally starts to go downhill it will happen quickly.

Plus, Villa is used to stellar goalkeeping and should something happen to Brad, Guzan has shown he can fill in admirably. This gives them a measure of comfort few Premiership teams have.

  4. dude about time Guzan gets a chance to start. I can’t see how AV have not loaned him out. Blackpool or WBA would love to have him

To spell Brad Friedel in goal? English is not my first language so will someone explain what that means?
