This Weekend’s Soccer on TV (and SBI’s Top Ten Matches to Watch)

Chelsea has looked unstoppable early in the English Premier league season but the Blues face their first tough test of the campaign against the big spenders from Manchester City.

Chelsea will have to win in Manchester by beating a tough Man City side that will provide the toughest test faced by Carlo Ancelotti's men so far this season. A win on Saturday and Chelsea will solidify its place as heavy favorites to win the Premier League.

There is quality action all over the world this weekend. In Brazil, you have first-place Corinthians taking on perennial power Internacional. In Italy, Inter Milan looks to keep Roma's struggles going. In Germany, unbeaten and first-place Mainz 05 looks to prove its strong start is no fluke against an injury-hit Bayern Munich side.

MLS has a loaded schedule of top matches as well, with Friday night's LA-New York tilt earning plenty of headlines even though Kansas City-FC Dallas and Chicago-Seattle are arguably more important matches.

Here is our list of Top Ten Matches to Watch, as well as This Weekend's Soccer on TV:

Top 10 Matches to Watch

1. Chelsea vs. Manchester City. Blowing away bottom-feeders is one thing, but Chelsea won't have it easy against danger City squad on the road.

2. Los Angeles Galaxy vs. New York Red Bulls. Star-studded affair should provide some entertaining soccer for the large audience expected to take this one in.

3. Bayern Munich vs. Mainz 05. A bit of role reversal as defending champions Bayern take on the first-place upstarts in a match Bayern Munich must win to avoid a deeper early-season hole.

4. Kansas City Wizards vs. FC Dallas. The two hottest teams in MLS square off in what should be a high-level match with plenty of scoring chances.

5. AS Roma vs. Inter Milan. Roma is in full meltdown mode, but a home win against the defending Serie A champions could help stop the bleeding.

6. Chicago Fire vs. Seattle Sounders. Freddie Ljungberg faces his former team again, but it's the major playoff implications that mean much more in this battle of playoff contenders.

7. Akron vs. Tulsa. A battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in the nation features two attack-minded squads who are also loaded with talent. A dozen or so MLS prospects will be on display in this one.

8. Bolton vs. Manchester United. Red-hot Dimitar Berbatov looks to torch the Wanderers defense, while Stuart Holden looks to continue his strong season.

What match-ups are you most looking forward to? What do you think the best game of the weekend is?

Share your thoughts below.

  1. “….while Stuart Holden looks to continue his strong season. ”

Woah Guy…Strong season by who’s standards? Im a few games in and haven’t really done much bur run around, made a few tackles, crosses…Come back and get on my jock when I score some goals or rack up some assists.

  2. likewise. i’m not taking any chances. i’m taping the review show on Tuesday afternoon when it shows on my local Fox Sports regional channel.

  3. Agreed as well. Thank God the WPS season is over. Last week I set the DVR to record an extra 30 minutes after the Review Show. Still wasn’t enough because some friggin’ WPS game went into overtime. grrrrr. I hate it when that happens.

  4. What makes the Ny, LA game so exciting? Big names? LA hasn’t been playing very entertaining soccer lately. I just dont see this one being as exciting as everyone wants to believe it will be. Then again the joy I get out of a game has nothing to do with the names on the field, but of the quality of the game. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but I swear I’m the only one who thinks back to the 1 goal in the tenth minute, 5 total shot thriller we saw last time these two teams played when this game is mentioned.

  5. Unfortunately, I have Comcast so I’ve never heard of those stations before, where are they available? Always good to have more options.

  6. To be complete, the “what’s on” list should include Brazilian A and B league games on Globo and PFC, which are both widely available on cable and dish.
