Altidore featured in La Liga interview

United States men's national team striker Jozy Altidore should be in action later Wednesday afternoon when Villarreal takes on Club Polideportivo Ejido in a Copa del Rey match. Altidore was recently featured in a La Liga interview, where he touched on topics such as the growth of soccer in the United States, the quality of Spain's top flight, Villarreal's depth of forwards and his connection to family in Haiti. Give it a look:

  2. LOL Good thing Chicharito has been scoring goals against weak competition then. 🙂 Also I’m glad Santos,Vela,Guardado as of now, are all 100% bench players.lol Sure, Chicharito gets playing time, but not against the big boys in the EPL,… he usually has a nice seat in the stance for those games.:)

But hey, we still have FINLEY! YEESS!

  3. I think LAX may be speaking from emotion however, there is truth in what he is saying.

Until we can match their player development infrastructure, Mexico will always have better skilled and more talented players.

Truth be told, Guardado, Dos Santos, Salcido, Marques, Hernandez, Suarez, Torrado…you would be able to make a real strong argument that they play their positions better than our players in their respective positions. They have quite a bit of talent and if all it takes for the NATS to perform at the highest level as a team is a top tier coach, then could you imagine what would happen if Mexico had a coach that can do the same for them in a 4-year cycle?
Keep in mind Aguirre only had them for a quarter of the cycle.

  4. As we Said , all we need the the Manager to put the right players on the field. The only place they got on us is Striker with Chicarito . We can match them anywhere else on the field.
You think Gaurdado is better than Dempsey ? You think Barera is better then Donovan, You think Marquez is that much better than Jones, if at all ? Holden is staring for Bolton, while Gio cant even make the game day squad. they got nothing on us in the goal keeper department either . they have an argument for their outside backs . But as far as I’m concerned Mexico has nothing to show off about. Get rid of Bob Bradley, we have enough talent to Dominate this region.
Oh btw get Well Charlie Davies, we need you .

  5. When does Mexico not have better skilled players? We play better as a team and that has been and will continue to be our strength. When they can beat us on US soil or neutral ground, in a game that matters, I might worry.

  6. “We have enough Talent to match the mexicans” really?????. Yeah right they have a better talent pool this time around. They have better quality players this time. We need to catch up. but with Jozy not scoring and the fact that Robobob plays three defensive mids well be O.K…….Not!

  7. Dude, you tossing out names of players that were and always will be better than Jozy. Let’s compare Landycakes, Bradley and Dempsey to Kaka, Ronaldo, and Essien while your at it.

  8. Dos Santos barely gets playing time for Spurs, Vela same at Arsenal, Guardado is good but please dont overrate these players. Hernandez is the only one i think has the Potential to be a huge star. Gio is very Flashy and can be a very good player but not to the extent you think. Gio is the new Saviola , now figure out what that means.
Findley is Bobs Mistake i cant blame him, i think the World Cup and his poor misses their killed off his confidence. one would think playing in a world cup would be good for a player but its effect on Findley is WOW. We have Talent to Match the Mexicans, we just need a good Coach to put the right players on the field. So dont get it twisted.

  9. Dont be foolish mate, Zidane did not show his full potential untill he was around 25-26, Neither did Xavi, or Even Drogba, who is still peaking into his 30s while players like Ronaldo is retired after peaking at 19-24. Players are developed different so their timing concerning peak is different. Its not a physical thing, its more mental than you may think. Players like Messi are developed alot faster learning from quality coaches and in competitive European Academies where the live football all year round so dont compare Jozy with them.

  10. Chicharrito is on fire!

Chicharrito, Giovani Dos Santos, Andres Guardado, and Carlos Vela.

Damn, Mexico is making a big comeback. They will be tough to beat anytime soon.

Oh, wait, what am I worried about?? We have Altidore and Findley! We’re fine. NOT

  11. So tired of you posting the same ungrounded post every time someone mentions Jozy. So your saying he is not doing well enough even though he is with a top club in Spain fighting for first team striker? That’s pretty good, considering by your measure he is still 4-8 years before his “prime”, so we still have two world cups where he’ll be “in his prime” Jozy obviously has spent more than two years as a full-time professional. I’m sorry did you just put Jozy down by comparing him to Lionel Messi? You realize there are only a handful of players in the world that can be in the same conversation as Messi, and I’ve heard no one mention Jozy, so perhaps your expectations are a bit far fetched. He should be starting to show his potential? Um, pretty sure that’s why Villareal paid $10 million for him, and are giving him opportunities to play against some of the best competition in the world. If an injury occurs to Nilmar or Rossi, Jozy is positioned to getting starting minutes, this is no small feat. So yeah, Jozy is young, and still provides us with a lot to look forward to for the future of the striker position here in the states.

  12. Jozy isn’t young by soccer standards? Messi and Cesc and Muller are freaks. Messi has been playing for Barca since he was 17, Cesc has been playing pro soccer for about 7 seasons now. And Muller is just special. Jozy is gonna get there, don’t worry. Jozy had to start at MLS and work his way up, he didn’t benefit from having great coaching like they do in the Barca academies and Bayern ones, and great competition that you play, he’s going to learn that now.

  13. Yeah, but who is? Chicharito is clearly the greatest player on the planet right now.

He stole that mantel from last year’s greatest player ever, Macheda.

  14. I don’t think anyone expects Jozy will be Cesc Fabregas — he is a rare player. The problem is that some people have placed a ceiling on Altidore’s talent that is far beyond realistic.

I would like to see the extensive data you have collected that assures you when a soccer player has reached his “prime.” Everyone is different. No formula can explain or generalize the physical and psychological convergence that leads to top performance. When did Ryan Giggs reach his prime? How about Zidane? Do you place more emphasis on attributes such as speed and strength or on intelligence, the ability to “read the game”?

I think Altidore may be a great player when he is 30 (barring serious injury). His inefficacy right now has nothing to do with his physical attributes, wouldn’t you agree?

When does an author or painter reach his prime? How about a banker?

  15. So tired of the “he’s still young” excuses for Jozy.
“Just 20 years old” is different in soccer. Because physical skills are so important, players peak earlier. Prime is 24-28, not 28-32. A 20-year-old in European terms has gone through European academy training and spent at least two years as a full-time professional. Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas, two of the biggest stars in the world, are just 22. Twenty-year-old Thomas Muller, in his first season for Bayern Munich, scored 20 goals and was pivotal on a team that went to the Champions League final. Jozy isn’t young by soccer standards. He’s the age where he should be starting to show his talent.

  16. Agreed, I think we’re too hard on him sometimes, myself included. When you compare him to other young stars (Holden, Davies before the accident, Bedoya, etc.), Jozy is still 3-4 years younger than those guys when they made it to the MNT. The good news is he’s still pushing and working hard.
