Here are some more stories to wrap up your Thursday.

England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has contradicted United manager Sir Alex Ferguson by saying he does not have an ankle injury.

Ferguson claimed that Rooney has been missing from recent United games because of a "nagging ankle injury." But Rooney, who spoke to the press after playing against Montenegro yesterday, said that he has been training for two months with no problems, indicating a rift between player and manager.

New England goalkeeper Matt Reis is out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his right ankle on Wednesday.

Reis, who missed the first 12 games of the season with shoulder and knee surgeries, played 14 games this season with a 1.79 goals against average.

Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt will be out three to four weeks with an ankle injury picked up during international duty.

The Dutch international was taken to the hospital after being injured during Tuesday's match against Sweden. Kuyt was initially projected to be out for three months but has been upgraded by Liverpool physicians.

  1. i completely agree, lack of Lori Chalupny makes no sense, shes been an integral part of the team for a pretty long time.

Of course Pia is doing the things we wish Nob Bradley would bringing in new talent and taking a few risks, but i have NEVER seen Chalupny have a bad performance.

  2. That was four years ago. Now he portrays Pikeys in ads – a more accurate depiction. Someone should tell Rooney that “ankle injury” is Ferguson’s euphemism for “overrated has-been.”

  3. Clearly, Sir Alex has simply confused Rooney with Matt Reis. Maybe Rooney can play in goal for the Revs? He looked pretty good in that Nike connercial a year or so ago. 🙂

  4. I am wondering why no Lindsay Tarpley? She had a good season for the Breakers and was playing consistently in WPS. I trust Pia knows what she is doing, but Tarp is experienced and tactically proficient.

Also the USWNT needs Lori Chalupny. Our back line is incredibly slow without her as is our center midfield.

Re: the U17 and U20 teams, our women’s national youth program is in serious trouble. Part of the problem is the use of college coaches at the U20 level using their rosters as recruiting tools and it is totally embarrassing that we couldn’t even qualify at the U17 level. Mexico lost 9-0 to Germany at the U17 WC and Canada didn’t make it out of their group. With our player pool and the resources we put into our YNT programs we should be doing a much better job.

  5. the u-17 spanked everyone except for Canada, who beat them going 0-0 and losing in PKs.

That, my friend, is why the qualification through 1-loss elimination brackets is stupid.

  6. The US women better not play like their U17 national team. I still and completely sickened that the U17 women’s team didn’t even qualify for the world cup!!! Outscore ur opponents like 25-0 and still not qualify.

  7. Leroux will get her chance she’s still young. Morgan has made the most of her chances with the team. Even though Leroux was Golden Ball winner at U20 World Cup, Morgan was the complete media darling and icon of the Chilean people. The “Like” Profile on Facebook for Alex has over 7K fans..thats even more than Hope Solo…and most of those fans…are South Americans!

  8. I agree it would have been nice to see Sidney but I am glad Alex Morgan got the call up. I think she is a great player who is full of energy and has good intuition!
