Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Lionel Messi 1 (Getty Images)

When David Villa signed for FC Barcelona this summer he probably didn't expect to his former club to be in first place in La Liga the first time he faced them.

That's exactly where Valencia sits as the two sides meet today in the day's best match. With Lionel Messi back to full health, the defending champions will be favored to halt Valencia's hot start to the season.

Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson couldn't find the net for the U.S. national team last week, but both will be hoping to break through today when Fulham faces Tottenham. The Premier League also features key tilts between Chelsea and Aston Villa, as well as Manchester United against surprising West Brom.

  1. Barcelona back to the way they should play with tons of possession and about half a dozen near chances, I really wanted to see Villa score on the cross from Alves they need him at his best and with confidence, Jordi Alba was doing great work on him.

This game is several levels above than the Arsenal, Man Utd or Chelsea game if you ask me!

  2. a point for aston villa is a tremendous result for the villains. villa had some golden opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize. fair result

  4. lol ur joking right, that was far from a golden opportunity and flubbed it.

on the donavon scale of flubbing it, it was a 2 out of 10. dont know what game u were watching, theres a reason he went 95minutes and didnt get subbed out. hes one of the most important pieces of that team and will be one of the most important pieces of our USMNT if we dont wanna keep looking awful in the midfield with Edu and Bradley “flubbing” things up,

Stoke isnt some horrible team, hes not going to look lights out everygame, point is hes still getting better.

  5. Holden had a golden opportunity in front of the goal a few seconds before the set piece and flubbed it. He was so so today. Was steady at times but gave the ball up too easily to Stokes midfield.

  6. been a thrillin 2nd half so far.

Dempsey hip checked Gallas to the ground and would have had a 1v1 with the GK if he hadnt been whistled. Still it was awesome to see the Deuce floor that old wanker.

  8. Sweet goal by Arsenal after some trademark passing around Birmingham’s goal box… Chamahk dives in 1H for the “assist” on the penalty and tucks away an angled shot to start the 2H

  10. Arsenal should be ashamed of themselves, they simulate more than any team I’ve ever watched.

And officials ALWAYS give them penalties for their blatant dives.

  11. Eddie Johnson starts on the bench for Fulham, as Kamara and Dembele are chosen for the starting XI. With A. Johnson returning to fitness, it is essential that Eddie makes the most of his upcoming chances. Otherwise, he will not be making the bench in a few weeks.

  12. Wish Charter carried Gol TV to catch Bundesliga matches. Hope Dolo and company can stymie Bayern. Think DmB will get some minutes…?
