This Weekend’s Soccer on TV (and Top 10 Matches to Watch)

DidierDrogba (ISIphotos.com)

Chelsea looked unstoppable until Manchester City handed the Blues their first loss last week. This weekend, Arsenal will look to keep their London neighbors on a losing slide when the sides meet in the weekend's marquee match-up.

Both sides posted Champions League victories at mid-week and they will renew their rivalry at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Blues face an Arsenal side struggling with injuries that are forcing Arsene Wenger to test out all the young talent on his bench.

There are some compelling matches in Italy, where Inter Milan faces Juventus and Napoli takes on struggling Roma.

If you're in the mood for some American soccer, then the FC Dallas-Chicago Fire match will be one to watch, as will the SuperClasico between Los Angeles and Chivas USA. Then there is the Maryland-Duke clash, which will feature more than a half-dozen top pro prospects.

Here is a rundown of This Weekend's Soccer on TV, as well as SBI's Top 10 Matches to Watch:

Top 10 Matches to Watch

1. Chelsea vs. Arsenal. Can't beat this London Derby as Chelsea looks to rebound from first lost of the season and Arsenal battles through injuries.

2. Inter Milan vs. Juventus. Yes, Juventus is struggling but there is too much history in this clash for it not to be ranked highly. Inter is coming off a loss to Roma and will look to defend its home turf.

3. FC Dallas vs. Chicago Fire. Dallas has a record-setting unbeaten run going while the Fire is in full desperation mode. This rivalry will have extra spice.

4. West Ham vs. Fulham. This London Derby has three Americans (though Jonathan Spector probably won't play). Clint Dempsey and Eddie

5. Barcelona vs. Mallorca. Will Lionel Messi play or rest after making his return in Champions League play? Either way, when Barcelona is on TV, you watch.

6. Tottenham vs. Aston Villa. Spurs will try to establish some consistency in the league while Villa will try to continue its winning ways under new coach Gerard Houllier.

7. Sevilla vs. Atletico Madrid. Want to watch some attacking soccer? This one will be a must-watch. Kanoute and co. for Sevilla, Forlan, Aguero and co. for Atletico.

6. Maryland vs. Duke. The Fox Soccer Channel game of the week this week features two talent-laden teams in a match that could feature more than a half-dozen 2011 MLS first-round pick candidates.

9. Napoli vs. AS Roma. Roma is enduring a rough early-going in Serie A, but after a thrilling win against Inter, you have to think the Romans are ready to give Napoli a battle. Lots of stars in this one.

T10. Chivas USA vs. Los Angeles Galaxy. The SuperClasico doesn't have its usual buzz because of Chivas USA's poor season, but these two always play entertaining and fiesty games so it will still be worth watch.

T10. New York Red Bulls vs. Kansas City Wizards. The Red Bulls are battling for first place in the East while the Wizards are fighting for their playoff lives in what should be an exciting Eastern Conference battle.

  1. Holden has 15 US caps, all of them given to him by Bradley. I believe 12 of them came last year in the run up to the World Cup.

You seem pissed off that Holden didn’t feature in the World Cup very much so why don’t you talk to Nigel De Jong who, and you may have missed this, broke Holden’s leg most likely diminishing Holden’s chances for a good World cup.

As for Coyle improving Holden while BB did not, that is a huge, messy, steaming pile of BS.

Holden has 97 clubs appearances as a pro. 88 of them were for Houston and Kinnear. That’s the man who more than any other should be given credit for Holden, not Coyle. Coyle deserve’s credit for spotting Holden and realizing that he would fit the kind of system he was installing at Bolton but it was Kinnear who gave Holden his start in 2006 and has developed him all these years. And before you tell me that Holden was at Sunderland before Houston, he made 0 appearances for them.

Kinnear, not Coyle and not Bradley developed Holden to point you see today. All Bradley did was boost Holden’s confidence by giving him about 12 caps this past season. The difference between Bradley and Coyle is that Bolton has better players and system more suited to Holden’s skills. Bradley doesn’t have the latitude that Coyle has.

National team managers spend so little time with their players that they have no time to “coach them up”. Players come to the national team as a more or less finished product. All national team managers can do is try to figure out the best way to piece together whoever shows up.

US fans bitch so much about Bradley not getting more out of our guys yet we are a team without a legitimate striker and a legitimate left back. This is a team that has to look to guys like Lichaj, who has yet to play a league game for Villa,to shore up a shaky defense.

Yet we finished above England in our World Cup group; a team that probably have about 5-6 guys on their bench who could start for us.

So tell me again about how great our players are and how bad our manager is.

  2. America vs. Cruz Azul should be in the favorites! Cruz Azul arguably the best team in the Mexican League with the red hot Javier Orozco up front, and America that will want to extend their dominance over “La Maquina”to fifteen unbeaten games dating back to the early ninenties!!!

  3. Any college or Chivas USA game making top 10 football games on the weekend means is a stretch where is tons of European football. Maryland and Duke? Really, that has me laughing.

(SBI-These are rankings for an AMERICAN soccer website, so the games are ranked with an American perspective. If you’re not American, or an American who only cares about European soccer and doesn’t bother with anything else, then I wouldn’t expect you to appreciate these rankings.)

  4. It’s all about RBNY and KC plus seeing Holden and Dempsey…I guess no chance of Jozy or Lichaj playing? I zoned out for a minute with them

  5. Aberdeen-born Holden has gone on to star in all six games of the current season as part of a strong looking midfield for the Trotters. His performances have not gone unnoticed by fans, and stats showed that his 96% pass rate in the first three games of this season was the best in the league.

Bob Bradley has a good eye doesnt he, one that mustof not been watching Holden play before he got hurt. I’ll never forget the road we had and the path we took. I hope Holden doesnt play in the friendly so he can practice under a coach that is obviously doing his job in improving his players.

  6. Still no love for the Brazilian league, Ives? Not enough talent there for you? Globo and PFC are both widely available and show a ton of Brazilian league games (A and B) over the weekends and should at least make the schedule. The big matchup this weekend is on PFC Sunday afternoon between Atletico Paranaense (David Ferreira’s former team) v. Cruzerio (Red Bull Arena visitors) Cruzerio sits 3rd and Atletico is 5th, so both need a result to keep their Copa Libertadores hopes alive.

  7. No Portuguese League game on ESPN3 this week Ives?…I thought they show one game per week…Anyways there are two big matches in Portugal this week…First we got BENFICA-Braga on Sunday at 3:15 and on Monday it’s first vs second as FC Porto travel to Guimaraes…Hope Porto drop their first game of the season there

  8. Nice just listening to ESPN Radio in NYC and they were interviewing Trevor Pryce from the NY Jets. When Michael Kay asked him now that you are in NYC maybe you can go and catch a NY Yankees playoff game and Trevor Pryce quickly replied that instead of the Yankees he was more interested in seeing the NY Red Bulls and Thierry Henry. Glad to see others are paying attention to MLS.

  10. Nice slate. Sevilla-A. Madrid is #2 and Tottenham-Villa is #3 in my book. Gobs of talent in both games and they are important given the matching aspirations of each pair.

    Cheers!

P.S. Think Drogs is athletic enough? That picture is impressive
