Americans Abroad: Wednesday Rewind

It may have been a brief, but Eric Lichaj's performance on Wednesday is surely one he'll never forget.

Lichaj made his Premiership debut in Aston Villa's match against Blackpool, coming off the bench in the 90th minute to help the Villans preserve a 3-2 victory. The cameo may not have been a lengthy one, but it could mean manager Gerard Houllier is gaining more trust in the young U.S. national team defender.

Another 21-year-old to do something notable was Jozy Altidore, who scored his second goal in as many legs against Club Polideportivo Ejido in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey. Altidore, who went the distance in the 2-0 win (3-1 on aggregate), netted Villarreal's insurance goal in the 90th minute. He also had a goal waved off in the first half.

Not all was positive, though. Maurice Edu suffered what could be a serious injury in Rangers' 3-0 loss to Hibernian. Edu was stretchered off the field in the first half after picking up the injury to his left knee, the same knee he hurt back in May 2009 that sidelined him for seven months.

Here is how the Americans Abroad fared on Wednesday:

  1. I think it might be for the best if Specs finds a new home in January. I just don’t think he has the speed to cut it as an outside back in the Prem. Centerback, maybe…

  2. Cap Franz Mathieu Fan now before he finds eligibility for another country!

He can solve our problems at Left Back, or Forward, or somewhere.

(and for those of you playing “Cap the New Guy Nobody’s ever heard of, that’s one point for me!)

  3. So basically Spector is out of the doghouse. Maybe he can reclaim a starting spot by January. Injuries might help him. I read Upson might leave and could open up an opportunity. CC 09 Spector was pure CLASS.

  4. Edu’s scan is this morning, like right now. Hopefully it isn’t bad, but all signs point to a long recovery. Here is praying for the best.

On a side note, has anyone else discovered the mouth-watering ESPN3 feature on XBOX? Half of the Serie A and EPL games were available in full HD yesterday through ESPN3.

  5. Correction: Hibs were actually the ones who triumphed. That match was Rangers 0-3 Hibernian, so all bad news for Maurice Edu. Hopefully he recovers quickly.
