Fernando Torres seems to have finally found his form, and not a moment too soon for a Liverpool side fighting to put itself back into European contention. Torres scored both goals in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday, a win that pulled the Reds back into the top half of the table, and shrunk the Blues lead to just two points over Man United. Third-placed Arsenal also suffered an upset on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Newcastle at the Emirates .

Meanwhile, in Spain, Barcelona kept the pressure on Real Madrid by defeating Getafe 3-1 on Saturday to take a provisional lead in La Liga. The lead was short-lived, however, as Real defeated Atletico in the Madrid derby on Sunday, 2-0.

Another derby with potential title implications took place in Italy, where Serie A leaders Lazio fell 2-0 to city rivals AS Roma.

In Germany, Borussia Dortmund extended its Bundesliga lead with a commanding 4-0 win over Hannover, while in France, chaos continues to reign, with only three points separating the league's top 8 teams.

Here is a rundown of all the weekend scores from Europe's top leagues:

ENGLAND

The usual suspects have dominated the Premier League through 11 rounds, but the second-tier of table-topping clubs features some surprising newcomers. Recently promoted Newcastle, regularly in the running for European places in the early years of their last spell in the Premiership, are currently fifth with 17 points, occupying the league's only automatic Europa League spot. Behind them are five teams on 15 points, including Tottenham and a suddenly rejuvenated Liverpool, along with three teams expected to finish mid-table at best. Stuart Holden's Bolton lead the charge, in sixth place on goal differential after an impressive 4-2 win over Tottenham. Sunderland and promoted West Brom round out the top ten.

Bolton 4, Tottenham 2

Manchester United 2, Wolverhampton Wanderers 1

Sunderland 2, Stoke City 0

Blackburn 2, Wigan Athletic 1

Fulham 1, Aston Villa 1

Birmingham City 2, West Ham 2

Blackpool 2, Everton 2

Arsenal 0, Newcastle United 1

West Bromwich Albion 0, Manchester City 2

Liverpool 2, Chelsea 0

SPAIN

As usual, the La Liga table is clearly divided into the best and the rest. What's unusual is that, for now at least, Villarreal has managed to keep pace with Real Madrid and Barcelona in the race to be the best. With 23 points, the Yellow Submarine is closer to both Barca and Madrid than it is to fourth-placed Espanyol, although that will change if Valencia defeat Sevilla tonight. Still, Villareal have performed well, overcoming an early goal to defeat Athletic Bilbao comfortably 4-1. We'll have a better indication of the club's quality next week, however, when they travel to the Camp Nou.

Real Sociedad 1, Racing Santander 0

Espanyol 1, Malaga 0

Osasuna 3, Hercules 0

Villarreal 4, Athletic Bilbao 1

Real Zaragoza 3, Mallorca 2

Levante 1, Deportivo La Coruna 2

Almeria 1, Sporting Gijon 1

Getafe 1, Barcelona 3

Real Madrid 2, Atletico Madrid 0

Monday: Sevilla v. Valencia

ITALY

The biggest match of the weekend in Serie A was the Rome derby between Lazio and AS Roma. Always a contentious match-up, the derby was especially significant this weekend, with Lazio attempting to extend its surprise league lead. Both teams hit the woodwork, and both teams had questionable referee's decisions go against them in Roma's 2-0 win. With the loss, Lazio hold just a two point lead over AC Milan, which held on for a 3-2 win over Bari on Sunday. Inter Milan missed its chance put even more pressure on the leaders when it drew 1-1 with Brescia.

Bologna 2, Lecce 0

Inter Milan 1, Brescia 1

Fiorentina 1, Chievo 0

Bari 2, AC Milan 3

Juventus 3, Cesena 1

Lazio 0, AS Roma 2

Napoli 2, Parma 0

Udinese 1, Cagliari 1

Sampdoria 0, Catania 0

Palermo 1, Genoa 0

GERMANY

After losing just one match out of their first nine, Mainz dropped their second in a row this weekend, losing 1-0 to SC Freiburg. Meanwhile, the team that defeated them last week, Borussia Dortmund, extended its lead with a 4-0 away win over Hannover 96. Dortmund now hold a four-point lead over Mainz, and still have only one loss on the season. Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the table, Michael Bradley and Borussia Moenchengladbach are in trouble. Currently dead last with 7 points from 11 matches and a -16 goal differential, the club missed a chance to earn three points against Bayern Munich when it surrendered an 84th minute equalizer to Philipp Lahm in its 3-3 draw with the Bavarian club on Saturday.

Schalke 04 2, St. Pauli 0

Eintracht Frankfurt 3, VfL Wolfsburg 1

SC Freiburg 1, FSV Mainz 05 0

Hamburg 2, Hoffenheim 1

Borussia Moenchengladbach 3, Bayern Munich 3

Nurnberg 3, FC Cologne 1

Hannover 96 0, Borussia Dortmund 4

Bayer Leverkusen 3, Kaiserslautern 1

VfB Stuttgart 6, Werder Bremen 0

FRANCE

Ligue 1 is easily the most competitive top flight in Europe so far this season, but that seems more a product of mediocrity at the top of the table than quality at the bottom. Through 12 matches, only one club, recently promoted Brest, has managed six wins (Rennes and Marseille have a game in hand and could conceiveably achieve this feat). Brest, however, were handily dispatched by Lille on Sunday, 3-1. The entire table, minus last-placed Arles, is within eight points of the top, and eight clubs are within a win of taking the league lead.

Sochaux 1, AJ Auxerre 1

St. Etienne 1, Lorient 2

Bordeaux 1, Valenciennes 1

Arles 3, Caen 2

Stade Rennes 1, Lyon 1

Lens 2, Montpellier 0

AS Nancy Lorraine 0, AS Monaco 4

Lille 3, Brest 1

Paris St. Germain 2, Marseille 1

  1. Glad to see things starting to click for Liverpool. John Henry will turn them into into a consistant CL team for years to come.

  2. Ian and Ives, don’t get rid of this feature or else. I love it. Maybe show the top 6 and bottom 6 positions also?

I hope Monchengladbach are relegated so Bradley can finally move on to a bigger club. Playing in Germany is fun and challenging, but he should be playing in European cup competitions.
