It's a good thing for the country's top teams that Cleveland State probably won't be headed to the NCAA tournament this season.

A week after handing then No. 1 Akron its first loss of the season, the Vikings held No. 6 Butler to a scoreless draw in front of a scant 138 fans in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs remain one of only two undefeated teams in Division 1 but miss out on a perfect record in the Horizon League. Butler held a 28-6 shot advantage, forcing seven saves from Celveland State keeper Brad Stuver.

In the ACC, No. 3 Maryland flexed its offensive strength with a 5-0 thrashing of Coastal Carolina on senior night in College Park. Matt Kassell, Paul Torres, Helge Leikvang, Karou Forbes and senior Billy Cortes scored for the Terrapins. Zac MacMath tallied his third consecutive shutout for Maryland, upping his season total to 11.

No. 4 North Carolina secured the ACC regular-season title with a 2-0 victory over Clemson. Senior Michael Farfan marked his return to the field with a penalty kick. Farfan had not played since Oct. 19 due to an ankle injury. Robbie Lovejoy added an insurance goal for the Tar Heels in the 73rd minute.

In the Big East, No. 9 Connecticut easily dispatched DePaul 2-0 in the first round with two second-half goals. A DePaul own goal opened the scoring in the 53rd minute and Tony Cascio added an insurance goal eight minutes later. With the win, UConn goalkeeper Josh Ford becomes the winningest keeper in school history.

  1. Akron escapes by the skin of their teeth again.. outshoot an awful team 5-4, scoring both of their goals while up a man to come from behind, win 2-1. SO IMMMMPRESSIVE, CALEB PORTER. WHEN ARE YOU BECOMING AN MLS COACH?

    Not that I’m bitter.
