Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

MessiVilla (Reuters)

The Spanish Primera is almost always a two-horse race between Real Madrid and Barcelona, but this year Villarreal has tried very hard to make it a three-horse race.

The YelloW Submarine can do just that today with a win against FC Barcelona in a clash of top Spanish clubs. Jozy Altidore is coming off scoring a goal in Copa Del Rey action and will look to get minutes against the defending Spanish champions.

In MLS, the Colorado Rapids will attempt to be the first team to clinch a place in the MLS Cup Final when they face San jose in the Eastern Conference Final.

If you will be watching today's soccer on TV, or if you've spent the morning taking in the early games, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. I like them too.. it’s the away red kits that are terrible. Clearly Fulham prefer the green ones because they’ve worn them 3 or 4 times

  2. I’d probably rate Donovan, Dempsey, and Holden (in no particular order) above Jones, but I do think Jones should start over Bradley, if it comes down to the two of them for 1 spot.

But yeah, I strongly agree w/ jpc that Holden should get a long look as CM for the Nats. He’s probably our best all around CM, so sticking him on the wing seems a somewhat backwards way of putting together a starting XI, unless you think we don’t have enough quality options on the wings (which after Donovan and Dempsey, we might not).

  3. how is it. this referee calls an advantage initially, then when both Xavi and Iniesta get away from trouble maintain posession AFTER the referee called advantage then he calls it back for the foul?? pathetic

  4. TVs not TVS

And to add…I’ve watched a lot of Serie A…and to me it is boring. I can definitely see how others would think it’s exciting though.

  5. Yeah, it’s definitely a world class league, but with the plethora of choices available on our TVS nowadays it’s easy to be nitpicky. Definitely possible that it’s partially that I’m personally not a big fan of that style of play.

This is going to sound strange, but I think one big reason why some people are turned off to Serie A are the fans. It would be different if you were there in person, but with the tracks around the stadia, it feels like no one is there on TV. Also, the sporadic violence has removed some of the casual attendees.

I just personally prefer La Liga, EPL, and Bundesliga. Still a great league.

  6. thats funny the last i recall the referee in the USA group world cup match was sent home for essentially deciding the outcome of the game

  7. Donovan————–Dempsey————–Holden————————————————————Edu——————Bradley————–Jones————————————————————-Bocanegra——-Onyewu——-DeMerit——Cherundolo—————————————————————————–Howard—————————

Defense is our main concern. Why? Because Cherundolo and Bocanegra aren’t getting any younger and Onyewu and DeMerit aren’t getting any playing time especially DeMerit he’s not even on a team. We do have three young prospect for defense which are Lijhac, Gonzalez, and Ream. Will they be ready for the WC14 IDK. We will also be needing a LB. The only two player I can think of AT THIS MOMENT who can play that position are Edgar Castillo and Miguel Angel Ponce (If he choose to play with the USMNT). Cherundol, Bocanegra, and Onyewu could possibily be able to play one more WC before they retire. Or we can have our young players take over the defense slot. In the end, our main concern should be defense other then that the USMNT has a very good team.

  8. From someone who absolutely LOVES La Liga,

It’s important to note that Serie A is a wonderful league with plenty of world class players. There’s an ugly myth out there that Serie A is boring, which its not. High quality as well, just a different style.

  9. I understand Jozy’s problems with finishing, but did you forget his first professinonal goal? The blazer against Columbus when he was SIXTEEN?

If you’re going to criticize, be factually accurate.

Moreover, the goal against Spain was a fine shot and you’re completely overexaggerating. It wasn’t amazing by any stretch, but he put it on frame and made it difficult for Iker, which is all you can ask of your strikers really. What he does really well is act like he’s going far post and take the near post. That’s what he did against Spain and that’s what he did on his shot that Rob Green saved in the England game.

Also, people are so focused on Jozy’s lack of goals and haven’t noticed the fact that he’s grown in other areas. He’s gotten more skillful than he already was, and he’s using his size, strength and speed to make chances against the best teams in the world SINGLEHANDEDLY. The issue is the finish and don’t get me wrong, that’s important, but don’t let it cloud the immense amounts of progress he has made.

He’ll get better people. We haven’t had a young prospect like Jozy in such a long time that nobody knows how to deal with his inconsistency and anyone who does needs to get over themselves.

  10. Bradley played a 4-3-3 against Columbia… and people flipped out and questioned his sanity because the team wasn’t used to playing that formation. I’d love to see it again too, but goes to show that you (or at least Bradley) just can’t win.

  11. The only thing wrong with Jozy right now is that he can’t finish. Now, as a striker, that’s a problem. What is great about Jozy though is that he still troubles the best defenses in the World and creates chances – he just doesn’t finish frequently enough. Once he does, he’s going to be one of the best strikers we’ve ever produced.

  12. Officiating should NEVER have an impact on the game they are simply there to enforce rules. if incorrect calls are deciding the outcome of a game, it completely destroys the match

  13. It’s like when people pronounce library as LIE-BERRY. Sure, you can correct them but then youre just the idiot in the end.

It’s pointless as it is snobbish to be concerned with the usage.

  14. pure pure BS in the Barca game. Horrible offsides call takes a goal away from Barca, and started the attack that allows Villareal to tie. absolutely TERRIBLE officiating

  15. That’s the problem Bob Bradley never plays the 4-3-3. It may say on ESPN that’s the US Formation but they never play it. They really need to try this out because let’s be honest, the USMNT doesn’t have a true striker and Dempsey is our next best thing with have. That is why puting Holden and Donovan on the wings can work out for this formation IMO.

  16. Stunning how much more I enjoy watching La Liga than Serie A. I tried to watch a bit of Roma-Juve and switched back to La Liga in about 40 seconds. Add Ray Hudson to the mix and it’s a huge win.

Oh, and I’d love to see Simão in New York.
