USA to face Chile at Home Depot Center on Jan. 22nd

    USALogo Chile

As the U.S. men's national team prepares for the final match of 2010 against South Africa on Wednesday, U.S. Soccer has announced the first match of 2011.

The United States will face Chile at Home Depot Center on Jan. 22nd.

The match will take place at the tail-end of the U.S. national team's upcoming training camp in January. MLS-based players and Scandinavian League-based players.

Chile was one of the most exciting teams at the 2010 World Cup, but most of the team's stars are likely to be playing in Europe at the time.

What do you think of the match-up? Which players are you hoping to see face Chile?

  1. It’s a shame Bielsa is gone. His tactics breathed fresh air into the stale, defensive football world. To speculate on who Bradley will trot out is beyond me. There are SO many young, talented Americans who deserve a closer look. It’s a great chance for the next generation to blossom. But let’s not forget who scored a hat trick last January.

  3. I like this match up. Chile was one of my favorite teams to watch in the WC. We will learn alot about our wing play. And Chile will not be passive and play not to lose…they will come to win.

  4. I’m all for fostering new American talent…

BUT…I’m not buying stock in Braun and I strongly oppose the odd fascination some have for him around here.

I literally have never seen him dominate any match or stand out in a memorable way at his current level and that is going to translate to the next level how?

While that may not be the criteria for everyone or every position, he’s just extremely vanilla and average Imo.

Respectively but adamantly disagree with the Braun-man crush

  5. And where was Ream during Gonzo’s terrible game? Oh, that’s right. He had a terrible game in the first round against SJ, when Gonzo was playing out of his mind against Seattle.

  6. I want Daniel Williams to get a call up. He’s doing pretty well in Germany and he’s on record saying that he wants to play for the US. He’s a great young holding midfielder, and if BB is looking for younger guys to come into camp, he should definitely get a call sooner rather than later.

  7. Yeah, its too bad, because it is actually a fun game. I went to the last two, and even though Honduras is more local than Sweden, it didn’t sell out. I don’t think the upper deck was even open.

  8. Omar did decent against the worlds fastest team, brazil, in august. Def a work in progress but i like the idea of having a linebacker esque defender in our future.

  9. i really want justin braun to get a call up, he has played well enough to deserve it. wondo needs another look, as does convey. other than that, i want a lot of the young MLS guys to get a look

  10. According to the original article this will be a game for MLS and Scandinavian based players – so your line-up may need a bit of work.

  11. haha no way

    Opara over Agboss
    Convey over Bornstein/Spector/Parkhurst
    Wondolowski/Buddle over Agudelo/Davies

    get Geoff Cameron in there

  12. completely agree…camp should not be used as a “lets get him back into shape” camp. With that being said, I would like to see Ryan Smith from the wizards play. He was raised in England, but I believe one of his parents are from the states. I have seen him play all season long…I think the kid has sick first touch & foot skill, as well as speed for a winger. Not sure why he has been under the radar.

  13. They wanted to play Iran last year in Jan after the elections (which didn’t go US’ way and didn’t create the intended international moment). And now they want to play Chile…after it’s moment. When Kim Jong Il passes, I suspect the USMNT will want to play North Korea next year.

  14. How do you figure that? Gooch used to be an “atrocious” defender too, when he was say, hmmm…. 21-22. I personally think Gonzo has the tools to be a better CB than Gooch at some point, but not now.

  15. Omar has no lateral speed…if he goes against a crafty/ speedy forward like what you find in South America, he’ll get toasted…he might do better aginst teams like Germany or England. Ike Opara and probably ream.

  16. I’m a big LA fan too, but AJDLG Gonzo and Franklin all had terrible games last night.

Perhaps camp cupcake will be an ok time to ease them into the international game and see if they could grow into that level of play.

  17. Gonzo should NOT be a starter on the Nats. Guy had an atrocious game against Dallas. Ream is waaaaayyyyy better, but still not on the level of the Nats. Both of them need time to develop. People who think Gonzo is the next Gooch are kidding themselves BIG TIME.

  18. I have no disillusions that we’re some powerhouse of a national team and therefor have immense depth across the board…

With that said, I can’t validate calling up Gooch if he continues to ride the bench. That same sentiment goes for everyone within the player pool, too.

If you want a call-up, please be playing and have some remote amount of form to show.

I was excited as anyone when he made the jump to Milan but it isn’t working. Until he transfers, the National Team call-up shouldn’t be a practice session for fitness or form, for any player in our pool.

I’d rather have Gooch playing for L.A. in MLS than riding the pine in Italy.

  19. It will be good to see Opara and Wondo get a callup. Some other young talent like Gonzalez, Ream, Alston, and Franklin. Convey probably earned a callup too, either at midfield or leftback.

  20. Dont think we’ll see Donovan though, prolly be on loan at that time. Maybe give Gooch a call to get his some time in with Gonzo….but I still think an All MLS team would be fun to watch!!!

    (Spector, Ream, Agboss, Parkhurst)
    Holden – Bradley – Diskerud – Feilhaber
    (Edu, Bedoya, Kljestan, Shea)
    Agudelo – Altidore

  22. Yeah, Bielsa quit. I’m expecting to see Burnbury, Ream, Mix, etc. and the MLSers who missed out on the SA call due to the playoffs, fine with that.

  23. Didn’t chile’s coach quit recently due to some political fiasco? I may be wrong, but I think his offensive measures were what made chili exciting this past world cup. Regardless it is good for our boys to play a team of this caliber.

  24. as much as i’m still in the grieving process from last night’s galaxy game…

i would love to see Omar Gonzales, Sean Franklin, and AJ DeLaGarza get called up to the training camp.

Omar will most likely get called for the camp.
Ives, what are the chances that Franklin and DeLaGarza get called up?

  25. I’d like to see an All MLS team for fun:

    Rimando
    (Johnson)
    Alston – Gonzales – Ream – Hall
    (wynne, borchers, parke, pearce)
    Larentowitz (Beckerman)
    Rodgers – Shea – Gaven – Bunbury
    (McCarty, Gaven)
    Wondolowski – Buddle
    (Braun, Lenhart, Agudelo)

That would be really interesting to see who stands out..and honestly, I don’t think they would do terribel either.

  26. Playing as many South American teams as we can between now and 2014 will serve us well. We’ve always struggled with their style of play. Same can be said of the African nations….but playing S. American teams will also better prepair us for team in CONCACAF (Central American Teams & Mexico) for the Gold Cup 2011.

If we have another Argentina match in March as some have reported that will be even better.
