Davies won’t play today, Sochaux suggests loan

American striker Charlie Davies is still working his way back from injuries suffered in a deadly car crash 14 months ago, and despite having been in uniform for Sochaux's recent match against Bordeaux, his future with the French club remains uncertain.

Davies will not be in uniform for the club's match today against AS Monaco, and Davies has been advised by his club to seek out loan opportunities. Sochaux manager Francis Gillot doesn't believe Davies will be able to return to a high enough level to play for Sochaux this year. The story also points out that Davies dressed for the Bordeaux match as a gesture for the work he had put in, but that Gillot had no intention of using Davies in the match.

The report by France Football also cites Sochaux president Alexandre Lacombe as stating that Major League Soccer is not an option for Davies, who would rather stay with Sochaux than go out on loan.

  1. Davis skipped curfew on the eve of a qualifier… then went psycho before the wc and thought he can recover and started to bad mouth the club who stood by him, then this year he got his licenses suspended for lying to the police… the kid needs to grow up and focus!

Hes scored against Egypt and Mexico… thats pretty much it for his career highlight… just calm the hell down and keep working hard!

  2. Has anyone other than CD himself ever said he was ready to return? I will give him credit for working hard to continue his dream, but there isnt a spot on the USMNT nor Schaux simply waiting for him to fill when hes fit. He’s gotta prove himself again.

  3. What “twisted facts”?

Pay attention. I was “vilifying” Kenny B. not Charlie D.

Charlie Davies, as far as I know, was not shown to be drunk on the night of the accident and he was definitely not driving the car.

However, his accident does illustrate the perils of such behavior on the part of the person driving the car. It also tells us that maybe we need to be careful about what cars we get into, in regards to who is driving.

Because someone died in the accident, and because he is a celebrity of sorts, it is Davies’ misfortune to be forever linked with the perils of drunk driving. It’s not entirely fair but Charlie is stuck with it.

I’m sure he’s dealing with it. He should be grateful he’s alive, let alone in reasonable condition.

  4. Very hard to be better than Buddle and Findley or to be a beast when you lost so much pace and that was 50% of your game… I am hopeful too but some injuries never heal right and the body can’t get back to a certain level.

  5. Do they have a winter break in Ligue 1? Maybe Charlie could train with the USMNT in the January camp and get a game against Chile?

  6. The article Ives linked to ends with a quote from Lascombe, Sochaux’s president: “Je peux vous assurer qu’il sera en stage avec le groupe en Tunisie (du 2 au 7 janvier).” Translated: “I can assure you that he (Davies) will train with the group (the Sochaux team) in Tunisia from Jan. 2–7.”

    Of course, there’s also this:

“Et un départ aux Etats-Unis, en février, pour le coup d’envoi de la Major League Soccer ? «Ce n’est pas d’actualité, a assuré le dirigeant des Jaune et Bleu, laissant entrevoir la possibilité d’étudier de nouveau cette éventualité en temps voulu.”

    Which means roughly:

“How about his leaving for the United States in February for the MLS kickoff? ‘That’s not planned right now,’ said the director of the Yellow and Blue, hinting that it would be possible to revisit the idea later on.

  7. Listen, what you said may very well end up being true, but considering when he was first hurt (what, 14 months ago?) the original prognosis was for like 6 months of recovery and 12 months of rehab before he could play, right?

I may be somewhat off on the timing there, but the gist is correct, and it means that the fact that he’s even playing right now, at whatever level, is a miracle.

Whenever an athlete suffers such a severe injury, it can take way more than a year to get back.

  8. Davies will likely go on loan in Ligue 2. He’s in need of some consistent competitive appearances, even if it is as a regular substitute. He’s been playing bad (at first dreadful) in the fourth division with the reserves and if he stays there, his confidence will continue to falter. What was done at the weekend was intended to boost his faltering morale. Watching players who were supposed to be your temporary replacements tear the league up together can really hurt, especially if you are no where near fit.

A loan to Ligue 2 would benefit both Sochaux and Davies. For Sochaux, it would give the club an opportunity to see if he’s capable of getting back to his regular self. Remember, Sochaux signed him on the basis that he could match or surpass Mevlut Erding, the person he replaced. That’s how highly the club rated him. For Davies, it is self-explanatory.

  9. Maybe to you but I’m under the impression that BB takes these camps seriously.

Davies isn’t some kind of team mascot. In pro ssports injured players are dead to the coaching staff. Right now he would be a distraction.

Davies can work out and run around all he wants in France just as well as he can in California.

  10. Davies is a bit of a bad influence at this point. He’s made several bad decisions involving cars. What has he done to deserve a look? You can only run so many guys through the paces, and these guys earned the call-up that Davies didn’t.

  11. This is a business. Follow the money.

In his present state Charlie is damaged goods. No intelligent club would buy him.

Keeping him and developing him further or loaning him out allows his value to rise. Release him now and they get nothing back on their investment.

  12. Here’s what Bradley said about the camp:

“The timing is right to assess many of the younger players and to broaden the player pool as we look forward to the next three years,” said Bradley. “These extended camps give the coaching staff an opportunity to work with these players closely, and at the same time expose them to what the environment and expectations are like at the international level. We have a good feel for the veteran players in the pool, several of whom are coming off long seasons, and we certainly expect many of them to be part of the program for the important tournaments this year.”

I think you can see the camp is for new, or younger guys. Davies doesn’t fit either of those descriptions.

Of course, maybe you think Sochaux are trying to disguise the fact that Davies is actually in the shape of his life and ready to challenge David Villa or Carlos Tevez for best striker in Europe but why they would do that makes no sense.

My reading of it would be Bradley has moved on and wants to spend all his time focusing on this young pool of strikers.

If Davies proves everyone wrong and suddenly tears it up in somewhere in Europe or wherever anyone will have him then there is plenty of time to get him into the Gold Cup or the 2014 squad.

No sane manager would build his squad for the Gold Cup (or 2014)around the idea that Davies will be back to his best.

  13. I definitely see why Chuck D wants to stay at Sochaux. At the very least they’ll have a personal connection with the kid behind close doors and wouldn’t treat him as much of a number as a new club would.

Get healthy, fit and game ready and make your run later in 2011. Going on a loan now could be catastrophic for his career, so keeping a little consistency while he recovers isn’t the worst thing. He obviously set the bar far too high, but in reality he’s probably lightyears ahead of where a normal person would be.

  14. I will 100% not rate Davies until at least next fall. I’m honestly surprised any of this is even a conversation at this point.

Souchaux seems to be giving some carrot and some stick..

Could you IMAGINE the reception Charlie would receive in each stadium if he was loaned to an MLS club. Given his ‘assumed’ current timetable.. The MLS season would seem to be about perfect.

  15. Are you talking about the USMNT camp in January? Any reason not to? I think instead you should try to think of one reason to bring him into camp. I can’t think of one. He can’t even play for his club let alone on the national level. He needs more time to come back, if he ever can come back. Sure, he is young, but he is lucky to be alive. January would be ridiculously too early for him to play for the USMNT.

  16. My take was for him to outshine in the reserve team but that didn’t happen either, so what do we expect? Hopefully, he can re-invent his style of play and successed somewhere.

  17. Any chance to bring him in for the January camp for some more playing time? Any reason not to? Maybe Souchaux doesn’t want to let him out.
