Goals from Dilly Duka (Columbus Crew) and Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City) led the way as the MLS Generation adidas side won 2-1 over Real Madrid's reserve side on Thursday.

Duka and Bunbury tallied in the first half to open up a 2-0 lead. Real Madrid Castilla then pulled a goal back in the 68th minute. Despite a team that only brought two listed defenders, the MLS side was able to hang on for the win.

Starters for the Generation adidas squad included Duka, Bunbury, Juan Agudelo, Ike Opara and Stefan Frei. Rising star and Real Salt Lake midfielder Luis Gil also made a short substitute appearance in the second half.

Next up for the squad is Rayo Vallecano on December 7.

What do you think of the result? Happy to see MLS Generation adidas players win one in Spain?

  1. A#2: They are of similar age, the GA team is pretty much U21 and the RM reserves are around the same age with a few older players.
A#3: The majority are potential USMNT players, or have gotten their first cap recently like Bunbury or Agudelo. Many played with the youth setups though.

  2. It’s a name. If you were that attached to Wizards your taste in names or judge of quality would be lacking in the eyes of most.

Those feigning confusion, outrage or general distress over the name switch need to come back to reality.

Wizards (formerly Wiz) was corny as F. Seriously, that’s where the debates starts and ends.

The name lacked any tradition, lore or roots worth merit…no more than Sporting for that matter.

If I’m not mistaken it was actually an ode to the Wizard of Oz, right? Talk about cheese ball…the actual club was created on the Missouri side of Kansas City, for what it’s worth. Not even Kansas of “The Wizard of Oz”.

This entire topic is getting old.

  3. how about “aguedelo leads US past qatar 8-0 in the first game of the 2022 world cup”

the game was played in searing 140F heat, with no women or booze in the crowd!…oh man this could be a disaster.

  4. a quick wiki search for Madrid Castilla and clicking through the links to players’ profiles indicates that they are of approximately the same age, 18-21, most of whom have been capped multiple times at U17, U18 and U21 levels by Spain.

  5. Maybe we can get a youth world cup before 2022? I’d go to that. Might even be easier since there won’t be the fight with the crowds.

  6. i actually think Andrew Wiedeman, drafted as a striker by FCD played a CB and Shea played at fullback. could be either way i guess but still a shock that the back line was Opara, Hall, Wiedeman, Shea and only 1 goal was conceded. that is one defender, two mid fielders and one striker playing in the back 4.

  7. Who cares. If Global Warming is real (or at least if it’s not cyclical) then Qatar will be even hotter by 2022 and the odds of needing a plan b are increasing by the minute.

Excuse me, I have to go buy a new SUV and drive off some stress.

  8. Just like the England Nats, count how many Nigerians are in the Youth system of the US.

Just sayin… 1st and 2nd Gen Nigerians are everywhere, not to mention the NFL. Just wait on the NBA, just wait…

  9. Which makes you wonder why they are the biggest CO2 emitters per capita on the planet. Why is anything except solar used to generate electricity in Qatar?

  10. My thoughts:

    1. I like the name Sporting Kansas City, it also them to branch out to other sport without have to lose the brand (I.E. Real madrid, Barca, Sporting Lisbon, Boca Juniors etc).

    2. What was the average age of the Madrid reserve squad versus Generation Addidas? Are we talking u21, U18 versus USA players that are 24-21 years olds or we talking similar age?

    3. A win is a win, let the gen players get exposure to playing together. How many are USA nats? Assuming that a majority are US Nats, couldn’t this result in a pseudo reserve team for the nats

    4. Ives, Can I get a highlight reel or what. You are killing at my 9-5.

  11. I love the sentiments, but lets be honest here.

Unless Qatar steals half of the Brazilian youth squads through illegal importation, they probably won’t score a single goal at the World Cup.

  13. Nice result, but I’ll be happier when a 30 year old Juan Aguedelo scores a hat trick in Qatar to eliminate them from advancing into the knockout rounds.

  14. Not to put to much expectations on them but some will be the veterns and stars in 2022 for US. We should have them play the Qatar national team.

  15. apropos of nothing, but the more I see the name Sporting Kansas City (as you see in the first line of the article), the less I like it. It just seems so contrived, and fake.

  17. Ahhhh, salve for my WC2022 wounds. If the WC won’t be in the US in the foreseeable future, at least the USMNT will make a splash whereever it is.

  18. Any good players on Real Madrid’s reserves? When was the last time a player from their development program became a significant player on their team? Castillas about 10 years ago? Real Madrid is the team that spends tons to buy it’s players, not develop them. Good that the US youngsters got the win, but really don’t know who it was they beat so don’t know if I should be impressed.

  19. I’m very excited to see them win. I usually don’t expect much from this team as they are just a bunch of guys thrown together very quickly with no time to gel. It’s nice to see a lot of young prospective US players doing well like this. The others don’t mean anything to me, just anyone who can represent the US.
