  1. DISGUSTED!

    FIFA says:

    “Kick racism out”

Then in 2018 backs the bid for racists and homophobes?

I can just see the tagline now:

FIFA 2018 World Cup, we’s just prefered if the non-whites and gays stayed home.

    OR

FIFA 2018 World Cup, free banana to throw with every match ticket*

    gays need not attend.

    FIFA=FAIL.

  2. This gives me more impetus to save for a trip to one of my favorite countries to study. I’ll definitely be trying to make my ultimate goal of seeing a World Cup come true, as well as fulfill another goal of visiting Russia.

  3. I’m OK with Russia, but Qatar… please is that even a real nation. They hate westerners there. FIFA is clearly a corrupt group.

  4. More numbers:
2010 WC attendance: 3.17 million, almost twice the population of Qatar
Oil exports: 22nd in the world
Natural gas exports: 5th in the world

  5. I might be up to taking a trip to Russia as well. Perhaps they picked Russia to counterbalance Qatar’s ban on alchohol. WC is Russia should be fun! Joking aside, they had a solid bid and Russia is very interesting as a country. I personally would have preferred England or Spain/Portugal combo, but I’ve been to Russia before and had a great time.

  6. I am happy Russia got the bid. I think they are capable of putting together a good WC. The big cities are very interesting to visit, the people very much love the game, they are not certainly not adverse to drinking, and (for those of you unattached), the women are beautiful and intelligent.

Hotels and transport are a problem, but they got 8 years to fix it. It would be a huge mistake to lump Russia with Qatar.

For those of you not afraid of visiting a new country, you are in for a very interesting trip. And if you have Russian friends, they may even show you a few places where beer does not cost $18:)

  7. If you though South africa hotel/drink/food prices are bad… wait till russia. When the average per night room cost is pretty much the same as the going rate was for the hotels in SA during the world cup. Beers in moscow pubs are 18 USD, marlboros are 20 something, and hotels are 800/night when its at a bargain.

  9. Best line, from the Guardian: “One saving grace of England’s failed bid: nobody ever needs to pretend to like Jack Warner again”

Here f-ing here, double down on that for losing ’22

  10. By the numbers:
Population of Qatar: 1.7 million (an estimated 3/4 of whom are expatriate workers – at least the manpower won’t be an issue)
    FIFA Rank: 113
Best showing at the Asian Cup: Quarterfinals

  11. The US should accept backup status, unconditionally. Then, if it becomes necessary to host, force FIFA to incorporate here 29 days before the tournament.

  12. Gotta hope the English Press is able to come up with a lot more damning evidence of kickbacks and corruption within FIFA. Qatar just bought a WC berth (what are they ranked, 133rd in the world?) as did the 3rd world nations that will received the Qatar stadiums after the Cup is over. Pathetic display of sportsmanship by the governing body.

  13. No, it puts to rest that idea that Spain/Portugal had it iced. Qatar is Qatar, and we could still see them go home with the Finals.

  14. Not good. But I think there’s a bias against England at FIFA. They all like to watch them sqwirm and continue to pay for hooliganism. Plus FIFA is that corrupt. Qatar is next.
