Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

From goals scored to key U.S. national team players ending their respective playing droughts, this weekend brought mostly good news.

Three Americans found the back of the net, including Edson Buddle, who enjoyed a dream debut with FC Ingolstadt 04. Buddle, who played 88 minutes in his first appearance abroad, opened the scoring against fellow American David Yelldell in Ingolstadt's 1-1 draw versus MSV Duisburg, but his goal would not hold up as Duisburg found a late equalizer.

Also opening the scoring against a compatriot in his club's respective match was Jonathan Spector. Starting in West Ham's midfield, Spector netted his first ever Premiership goal by finishing with a firm one-time shot past Tim Howard and Everton's scrambling defenders after receiving a pass from the left. Spector went 90 minutes in the match that ended 2-2.

Jermaine Jones came close to opening his scoring account with Blackburn Rovers in his debut for the club, a debut that was possibly worthy of Man of the Match honors. Jones ended his playing time woes by delivering a strong 90-minute showing in Blackburn's 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. Jones looked composed and sharp in the game, breaking up several of West Bromwich's forways while also connecting on most of his passes

What do you think of these performances? Cautiously optimistic that Buddle's goal is the start of a strong season for him? Do you think Spector's play will result in him getting loaned out or transferred during this transfer window? Expect Jones to continue to play this well in the EPL?

  1. CONCACAF ABROAD:

Did anyone see Junior Hoillet’s goal for BlackBurn? He’s eligible to play for either Canada or Jamaica and has yet to declare who he will represent. I wonder if he will show Gold Cup suprise for oneo of those countries?

  2. Guzan’s ONE MONTH LOAN to Hull ends this month.

He’ll probably start for Villa in the fall.

Nick Rimando and Troy Perkins (yikes) are probably in line for the third keeper slot in 2014.

I’m thinking that a 29 year old keeper that hasn’t been capped (or even called into a camp) probably isn’t of interest.

At this point, you’d have to believe that Luis Robles and Dom Cervi are further up the order, as they’re younger and have both been when the team at times.

  3. Okay, the fact that Lichaj isn’t even DRESSING for Aston Villa anymore is ridiculous. I don’t know what Houllier is on, but he is a darn good defender who had one bad game–a game that basically the entire team blew. Funny how the fact that he shut down one of the best wingers in the league just three days before has been forgotten. I know that they’ve brought in Walker on loan, but I can’t help but think that if you have a player like Lichaj with all of that potential, you’re better off giving him playing time so he can develop than putting money into a loan. I hope that he gets some sort of loan. He’s too good to not even be making the bench.

Spector is getting better and better at midfield, though. Interesting that Bradley hasn’t started for a second time in a row…makes you wonder if something is going to happen there.

  4. Update: ESPN reporting that Inter´s Sulley Montari is transferring to Sunderland on loan/buy-at-end-of-season.

If that goes through it would seem to rule out MB from Sunderland since Montari nominally plays the same position.

  5. He did his job well.

He covered space on the field. He covered Salgado when he made forays down the wing.

Some of his passes were excellent.

The knock on his game were the fouls outside the box and one that should have been a penalty against him.

  6. Timothy Chandler came off the bench and played 34 minutes in Nurnberg’s 1-1 draw vs. SC Freiburg on Saturday.

Who? We have a 20 year old who is eligible to play for the USA and he is playing in the Bundesliga?

I’m starting to feel like it’s time for Jozy to get a loan for the remainder of the season. They are out of the Copa del Rey. Rossi is scoring enough goals for the entire group of forwards. Jozy is making the bench, but not getting on the pitch. His chances of playing more than 20 minutes are slim. And he isn’t exactly a super sub. A loan move to another La Liga club would benefit him as long as he is starting. Then he can come back to Villareal next season.

  7. Yeah it was a winter break match. The season starts up again in about a month. It was a nice assist though, the kid has speed.

Sean Cunningham will sign his contract on his 18th birthday. He’s from Michigan and played on the game club team as Gatt.

  8. I get so sad seeing what has happened to Damarcus Beasley. Is he going to spend the vast majority of the seconf half of his career “not dressing” and “not playing”?He HAS to go to a team where he can play.

  9. Odd situation with MB right now, and it’s too early to draw any definite conclusions.

He appears to have been benched in favor of 20yo Roman Neustadter, who promptly had a goal last week and an assist this week — and the Gladbach coach has clearly been trying to shake up the team all over the pitch to get results.

MB played 20 min last week and got the last 5-6 min this week, and he had a great free kick right after he came on that the Gladbach forward headed JUST over the bar — so MB is still in the mix there.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens next weekend. Neustadter got the start yesterday because no soccer coach changes lineups after a win. Now that Gladbach got smoked again maybe MB gets back in?

The transfer rumors have died down, and it was Ives that broke the first “MB to Sunderland” rumor that the English papers picked up, so I wonder if Ives has had any follow-up on that from his sources.

At this point, everything’s on the table this week: MB could get his starting spot back, could transferred to the EPL, or maybe he really could stay demoted to super-sub in favor of Neustadter.

To say definitively which way it’s going to go is pure speculation right now.
