Brad Guzan's month-long loan move to Hull City has already produced more playing time for the American goalkeeper in three days than he'd seen in the past three months.
Guzan made five saves to help Hull City post a 3-2 victory against Portsmouth on Monday.
Guzan started and played 90 minutes, making a key late save to preserve the victory.
The match came just two days after Hull suffered a New Year's Day defeat, 1-0, to Leicester City.

Oh geez Giisepe Rossi…..like I haven’t heard that before. Come back when you have original material.
Vito is back with Arsenal for the remainder of the season as it looks like Manuel Alumnia is heading back to Spain.
As a Gunners fan I say good riddance (although he was impenetrable in the first 45 minutes of the CL v Barca last year)
@kasper
Lol ur a portsmouth fan
Keepers are different. Guzan had a lot to learn and Friedel would seem to be a great keeper to learn under.
As long as he was getting Carling Cup games and USMNT games it looked like Guzan was coming along okay. It’s not like he was Dominci Cervi, who did not play anywhere last year.
Based on his US games he was coming along great. Then he started not getting Carling Cup games, so this loan makes sense now plus it gets Houllier a chance to see him play even if only for Hull.
I’m a Portsmouth Fan and listened to the game online. Overall Portsmouth did have many shots and Guzan played a very good game. The problem was that many of Pompey’s shots actually missed the net. 18(7 on goal)
Brad just had an epic game against Chelsea, so he’s not out to pasture yet.
Mannones deal was supposedly set to run out on Jan 3rd anyways, but not sure where he stands now. If thats true Hull only have 1 senior level keeper on the squad since they sold Myhill to WBA
i believe Hull’s top 3 keepers are out, and they needed cover. Mannone (on loan from Arsenal) had been starting but just went down last week.
Most likely, Hull made a call around the league to find a competent keeper in very short time and AV luckily provided a more than capable youngster In BG
I tend to disagree with this statement when it comes to keepers: Keepers don’t have to be game fit like field players. Their reaction saves can be fine tuned in practice/reserve games.
I think spending those years watching and learning from the other Brad is way more immense at his age. Now it’s time to show what he has, but I wouldn’t think of it as a waste.
I think that by the end of January, AV will have one US goalkeeper. They are just figuring out which one they are going to keep with this loan.
These short loans (when within the same country) aren’t that uncommon. In this case, I believe it’s only a month because Hull’s #1 keeper (who is also a loanee) went down with an injury that is expected to have him out for a month.
In AV’s defense, I think they saw a young and up-and-coming keeper with Premier League potential who could learn from one of the best and step in when Friedel left/retired. Maybe they should have loaned him out sooner, but Friedel is old and what if he got injured or abruptly retired?
All that being said, its great to see him showing what he can do and hopefully Guzan continues to start going forward, whereever that may be.
Does anyone know why he’s only on a monthlong loan? What kind of sense does that make?
I think he’ll only improve as he gets more first-team games under his belt. Hopefully, Brad will play so well that Villa will be forced to hand him the starting job.
What this says is that AV were worried Friedel would get hurt and Guzan is their cover. That’s why they have only let him go for a 1-month loan. At least he’ll get some games and the chance to get sharp. They are probably also using this as a test to see if he is ready to be their #1 keeper when Friedel comes back to the US at the end of the year (if that happens).
Great news. Hope this leads to more opportunities for him in the future.
I read that he played well. Looks like he made a pretty nice save at the death to preserve the victory.
I can’t imagine playing 2 games for 90 after having only the occasional cup game for the last couple years. Must be difficult. I have no idea what AV were thinking letting him rot on the bench.
Imagine how good he could have been by now if he was loaned to another team 2 yrs ago rather than sitting behind Friedel. What have the fans been saying since???
Probably should get a new agent after this.
