Onyewu set for FC Twente debut

After a frustrating fall spent watching AC Milan matches from the sidelines (and more often from the stands), U.S. national team defender Oguchi Onyewu is set to make his league debut with FC Twente today against Heracles (12:45pm).

Onyewu has made the move to the Dutch Eredivisie on loan, where he will be re-united with his former Standard Liege manager, Michel Preud'homme. He has already fit in with his new club, scoring in a friendly last week.

If you are hoping to see Onyewu's debut, you might be able to watch it via this live stream. If you do get to watch it, please feel free to share your own thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

What do you think of Onyewu's move to FC Twente? Excited to see him back in action?

Share your thoughts on the move, and today's match, below (and enjoy the action).

  1. man i thought the dutch league eredivisie would play a lil better than this? the team twente is playing to me looks like an MLS team.

  2. Re Twitter posts- I don’t speak Dutch either. I just paste the text into Google Translate. Warning- quite a bit of racism too that I didn’t translate. A bunch of clueless teenagers. I should tweet them some links to Gooch’s modeling poses – that would really blow their minds 😉

  3. GOAL TWENTE in extra time. Midfielder standing with ball at corner of box plays ball to winger making the overlapping run who lofts a beautiful ball to the back of the six, over the goalie, and the ball is emphatically headed in by one of Twente’s players.

  4. Gooch just got twisted up, almost collided with Douglas, but the attacker that beat him sent in a cross that was easily collected by the keeper.

  5. Great foot skills/spin move thing by Gooch to take the ball away and pass to a teammate, then makes a run down the left side but the pass doesn’t come.

  6. Goal. De Jong rips the ball past the keeper inside the 18 after a great through pass from a teammate and then his nice run between two defenders.

  7. The Dutch twitter feed for Onyewu is hilarious. They seem to be more interested in his biceps than his foot skills. So far he’s been called a beast, a bear, a tank, and a weightlifter.

  8. Gooch seems to have a pretty good handle on his mark’s speed now. His positioning is pretty solid, and he marked his man out of a couple of 1-2’s.

Twente kinda go into a 3 man back when the have the ball, as Gooch is not really getting forward unless there’s an amazing opportunity to.

  9. yea, guy got free unexpectedly on the left, and it was one central defender marking his forward into the box. The striker ghosted in front of the defender, and the defender slipped trying to catch him. The ball was crossed to near post and it was a simple flick for the striker to score. Looked really ez, actually.

  10. I love Gooch, but LB seems like a stretch. Even pre-injury “fleet-of-foot” was not Gooch’s description.

I’m sure he’ll handle the position fine and with professionalism, but any right winger with some real speed would give him immense trouble.

  11. Great Guy. He seemed like he always gave it his all and continues to do so… He played for free, for gods sake. I hope flourishes at twente.

  12. Gooch IS at left back. Got burned down his flank a second ago, but did well to recover and his sliding challenge forced a corner. He seems to be floating inside a bit, but he’s already won two balls with his head off of opposing set pieces and he seems to be moving pretty well.

  13. gooch just got burned with a ball between the centerback and him. He managed to catch up and block the cross out for a corner. Good recovery

  14. well, he looks comfortable enough in possession. He just got forward for the first time there and understandably had a pretty poor cross with his left.

  15. Also, Bryan Ruiz is out. I’ve read several dutch website previews that have been posted in the last 15 minutes and apparently Gooch is starting as a left back.

  16. this is great news, anybody know if he’ll get a start or is on the bench? it might be early to jump the gun and expect him to start, but the manager already knows him well so he should have faith. best of luck to ya gooch!

  17. Pumped for this loan. He needs to get back his match fitness. But looking at Twente’s roster, where does he fit into the back line? They have Douglas Franco and Peter Wisgerhof, who I assume are their central defenders? Does anyone have a clue where Gooch will get in?
