Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Clint Dempsey 2 (ISIPhotos.com)

Clint Dempsey and Fulham aren't challenging for a European place, and are more concerned with avoiding relegation, but the FA Cup is still the club's best chance at glory and the Cottagers will need to knock off mighty Tottenham today to keep that dream alive.

Fulham-Tottenham headlines the day's FA Cup offerings, with Arsenal taking on Huddersfield Town in a battle of powerhouse vs. minnow.

Serie A has plenty of action, with Scudetto challengers Napoli and Roma both in action, along with Inter Milan.

If you're up for some nostalgia, Sao Paulo takes on Santos today in a clash of Brazilian powerhouses, and in a match that should feature the Sao Paulo debut of legendary Brazilian star Rivaldo.

If you will be watching today's action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. Thanks to Rob for the civilized response (thanks to 20 for the opposite).

How about this for an example in support of my comment: Lichaj plays great and basically took Bale out of the game when Villa played Tottenham – very little notice by the commentators (we played it up very well here on SBI).

The next week he did not play well and was blamed for all sorts of problems in the Villa defense, when in reality he was left exposed and bare on many occassions. I am not defending his poor play (nor Spectors), but they weren’t always the worst of the bunch.

  3. Salcido did pretty well for the first month he joined. He assisted on 2 goals of Dempsey’s I believe. Unsure if fans would rather have Konchesky but Salcido is a decent player for sure.

  4. I don’t agree 100%, however to add fuel to the fire Holden was born in Scotland and that may be a reason.

Now to be fair Sepctor was horrible.

  5. I am a bit disappointed by Sidwell’s play so far. Had hoped that he would strengthen Fullhan’s midfield but 30+ minutes gone by and I think he may have touched the ball twice and should have been called for a card once. This when Fulham totally dominating possession….hum….

  6. Am I the only one that find that amusing? I thought the same thing but just now was thinking, why are such amateurish misses come off as great or entertaining? LOL

Must be the pace of it and the back and forth it’s given the game?

  7. thought bendtner was a little better today. definitely showed some glimpses of hope. Same from Arshavin too. Wish the ‘b’ side could have come up with the win on their own today though. Shame about Nasri…

  8. Here is my xenophobic take: English (and most european) commentators do not wish to accept that Americans play well. As a result, you only hear when they play poorly.

With the exception of Holden, think of the good tactical games US players have had – no credit. Think of US players on poor teams – the US players is always the worst of the bunch, like Spector at West Ham.

  9. This has become a laugher..sure Spurs are down a man..but even before that their Defense has been at sea. Dempsey, Dembele, Duff, and Johnson are running riot…

  10. Shame Dempsey didn’t take either of the PK’s. Murphy was really thanking him for the 1st. Hope Dempsey scores. Dembele has had chances but has failed.

When Zamora comes back, Dembele will be “super-sub”

  12. WOW Tottenham is having all kinds of trouble with Dempsey and Murphy!

Damn it that 2nd PK should gone to Dempsey!

(Yells with hanging US Jersey and Dempsey Fulham Jersey before they switched to Kappa)

  13. # GOAL FOR RANGERS! Edu smacks a delicious shot into the net from 25 yards out. Superb, fine. No chance for the Motherwell keeper.

  14. I believe he was being sarcastic. But in alternate Universe B, Clark would have started for FRankfurt against Bradley and both would have scored to tie the match 1-1.

BTW I think every US fan in the universe followed Bradley’s suprise loan to AV.

Two off topic questions, but I needed to get these thoughts out before I forgot to ask.

1.) How is Agbossmounde’s trial going? Has he been signed to a deal yet?

2.) Excuse my French, but sh*t is hitting the fan in Egypt. Any word on if the Feb. 9th friendly will get canceled or postponed?

Thanks and props to you and the staff as always on a wonderful job.

  16. whow what a match. needed cesc to inspire the team for a 2-1 win but huddersfield surprised me with their quality, was expecting more direct rugby kicks.

shame nasri came up lame in the first and i hoped this would be the match arshavin figured it out but alas up and down performance.

    up Arsenal!

  17. When is Findley going to start playing? Is he still having problem with paper works or is he just not able to make it to the 18 yet? He’s been granted that work permit for 16 days now.

  18. Dempsey with the hat-trick today. Make it so DEUCE

I guess Fulham will let EJ ride out his $2 million a year contract in May. Hope he can head back to a club in Greece or try Holland or Turkey.
