Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

In addition to the number of Americans that are in action on Wednesday, Barcelona and Real Madrid both have Copa del Rey semifinal first-leg matches, which should make for a rather exciting day of mid-week soccer.

Real Madrid must travel to Sevilla for its match (2 p.m., ESPN3.com/ESPNDeportes), while Barcelona will host Almeria (4 p.m., GOLTV). If both favorites can take care of business, they'll be one step closer to setting up a dream Clasico final.

Aside from the Copa del Rey, Jonathan Spector and West Ham will look to advance to the Carling Cup final by holding off Birmingham (2:45 p.m. Fox Soccer.tv/Fox Soccer Plus), and Clint Dempsey and Fulham aim to climb the Premier League table with a match at Liverpool (3 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel).

As for key matches featuring Americans not being televised in the United States, Maurice Edu and Rangers face Hibernian (2:45) and Oguchi Onyewu and FC Twente take on Eredivisie leader PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Cup quarterfinals (2:45).

If you will be watching any of Wednesday's matches either on television or via Internet feed, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action!

  1. I completely disagree with you.

You mean to tell me that Holden, Donovan and Bradley are not good at crossing the ball??? They can play out wide just fine.

Also, using the word “skill” and Jozy Altidore in the same sentence doesn’t make any sense at all. The guy has bricks for feet. Size and Strength I’ll give you.

Lastly, Dempsey most definitely holds the ball up well. You obviously haven’t been watching any Fulham games lately. He holds up and distributes the ball in every game.

  2. I’m sorry you’re wrong in just about every way. Dempsey would not do well as an out-and-out striker in our system because we don’t have wide midfielders dedicated or good at crossing the ball. Moreover, Dempsey does NOT hold the ball up well.

As far as comparing Dempsey’s play to Altidore, it’s completely different. Altidore’s size, strength, speed and skill allow him to provide a direct threat to the backline and cause them headaches all day. Dempsey is the kind of guy who FEEDS off that kind of player because it creates distraction from him and spaces that he can move into.

  3. Bradley has actually used Dempsey in the forward position quite a bit especially when defenders start to tire out at the 2nd half of games. It seems that Dempsey excels in joining the attack rather than being marked by centerbacks the whole match.

  4. Dempsey looked great today, especially towards the end. He almost had one of the best goals of the year for all of the EPL!

Why is Dempsey not our starting striker??!!

He holds the ball up well, he wins headers and he strikes the ball with authority. He has 9 goals in the EPL this year!

Bob Bradley – Can you please compare Dempsey’s play with Jozy Altidore’s? Then make the rational decision to have Dempsey as our #1 striker.

  6. hmmm.. the more i read about it, the announcement today was a 5year partnership for the stadium and team, and their Vancouver (Canadian) Football team. Not sure if this includes shirt sponsorship:

“The new partnership agreement sees Budweiser become the official beer of Whitecaps FC and have the exclusive pouring rights for BC Place when the stadium reopens later this year. Budweiser will also have access to Whitecaps FC logos and branding, as well as exclusive rights to media and signage for the club.”

  7. Did Vancouver just announce a big sponsorship with Budweiser? If so, that’s great for them. Chivas, now Vancouver? nice.

Now the Fire need to pull down some Modelo action! ha… or Old Style.

  8. WH handed that one to Birmingham on a platter. They were great first half, horrific the second. Spector had a good match–if someone had actually connected with his cross at the end of the second half, maybe things would have been slightly different.
