Aston Villa 2, Fulham 2: The Highlights

  1. Saying that they are tied in scoring is not saying one is better than the other. You read to much into it, well we all interpret it differently. I just think it is wonderful statistic.

  2. Why would I like to see Bradley with the armband? Or why do I not think Dempsey wants that role?
I just don’t really get the captain’s vibe from Dempsey. It’s not a rational thing, it’s just how I see it. I was happy to see him put on the armband a couple of months ago.
Honestly, I just have a man crush on Bradley. That’s all.

  3. This is a weird argument to have. They aren’t the same kind of player. Different qualities, but you have to realize that for the nats, Donovan is a little bit more important because we need his pace to stretch the defense, and we need his vision to create chances for guys like Dempsey. Anytime we’ve played without Landon and with Clint, Clint gets almost none of the ball.

  4. We want an American Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo. Clint is one of America’s best. Landon Donovan is one of our best also. So I agree with you technically, but the aspiration of American Soccer fans is to see an American climb to superior heights in the EPL league. You can say, we’re a bit overzealous about our aspiration for our Yanks abroad.

  5. How does he always know just where the ball is going to fall inside the box? The U.S. has never had a finisher who combined Dempsey’s instincts, talent and guts.

Unlike most pure finishers, though, this guy is also kind of an artist in the middle of the field. I would love to see him play with similarly gifted teammates.

  6. yeah…I’m sure you could have..and I suppose you could have spun Gerrard twice too right? He scored the only goal of the game…how about a little credit. He took a chance and it paid off

  7. Nobody said Clint is better than Torres? WHy the hell not?

OK, I’ll say it. Clint is better than Torres. In fact, I’d say in almost every facet of the game, Clint is better.

Torres really ain’t all that. To succeed at his size, you have to be special. Torres isn’t that special.

  8. Of course, Clint’s one goal was silly. To give him lots of credit for it is even sillier.

If’ I’d been in goal for England, I would have saved it.

  9. He’s saying had Deuce taken the Ghana PK, instead of Donovan, they’d both would have had 2.

Either way, I think it’s good that we even have an argument who our best player is. At this point at club level I’d push for Dempsey, w/the Nats still have to say LD.

  10. Clint is very good at a very specific position. He is a great left attacking mid/withheld forward. He is great at sneaking into the box late and finding headers, and he is great at finding space on the wing and linking up with center forwards.

Clint is not a center forward. He’s not a true winger. He’s not a target man, and he’s not a box to box midfielder.

He’s found his niche at Fulham and is playing very well. I don’t see why people want him to leave.

  11. Okay, most of you either misread my question, or just didn’t answer it.

If Charlie Davies is 100% tomorrow, does he start on the USMNT, or do we keep Holden in the middle of a 4-2-3-1.

That’s what I want to hear opinions on.

(P.S., nobody said Deuce was better than Torres, it was just noted that they had the same number of goals. Read before you reply.)

  12. This is the silliness I wanted to shame in earlier posts. Clint is good, and no one should deny it. But to compare him with Torres? Silly. I don’t care if they are tied for a season, or as I hope, Clint will outscore him this season; Torres is still a better player. Sure Mark Sanchez beat Manning and Brady, but you have to be daft to think him actually better than those two.

  13. The Germans would hate him. Even now, many Fulham fans think Clint a bit lazy, undisciplined, etc. I’m not saying I think so, but the fans do. Clint in Germany would last until one bit of style failed, then he would be on the bench. I think it is somewhat telling that MBradley, blood and guts MBradley, had problems with his coach in Germany. Mind you, I think this is why Germany will have a tough time winning world cups in the future. Beyond Joachim Low, most German coaches would want to chasten Ozil, not let him play with the freedom to win the game.

  14. Really? So his crappy service has resulted in his best season ever? A crappy service coinciding with Dembele and AJ being on form? The crappy service that leads to him getting goals scoring chances every game?

  15. This is the kind of stupidity that cannot be countenanced. His improved goal scoring is a result of having dembele and AJ on the team, and together, the three of them make quite the attacking force. The service had been rather good this year, which is why he scoring as mcuh as he does. While he could go to a bigger club, don’t think that club will be a ManU, Chelsea, or some equal behemoth. When all is said and done, he could be the best US player ever, but that is not necessarily equivalent to playing for a Champions league team.

  16. Dempsey is better than Donovan. If Dempsey had taken his well earned PK at the WC they both would have had 2 goals. That aside Deuce wills his team to win and as already mentioned has the cojones that Landon doesn’t have.

  17. I’d think Clint would be attractive for any EPL team in Europe next year. Problem is that none of those squads would really be much more desirable than the situation he has currently. Italy? Germany? Maybe, but now’s not the time to have to fight for a place and risk riding the pine. I’ve thought for awhile now that his best move would be to a club like Villa or Everton — a bigger club than Fulham that is unlikely to get wrapped up an relegation scrap and could be ripe for investment, etc. (Granted, neither of those are looking too good at the moment.)

  18. If Davies tears it up in DC he walks right back into USMNT.

But that’s just because the strikeforce is so underwhelming, except for Dempsey – tied with $80m man Torres as EPL’s #7 goal scorer.

So real question is: who plays with Dempsey up top, since at midfield we have decent options.

  19. Clint’s always stayed out of club politics, makes pretty diplomatic statements to media always. I think he could get along with Magath.

  20. Your question assumes someone has come in and filled the speedy/non-target striker role he was in the process of nailing down before the accident. However, that has not happened.

  21. Whoever bought him would have to set a transfer fee record for a US player…still cheap by EPL standards.

At 27-28 it looks like he has several more good years in him. Clint’s game never depended on blinding speed, more on being in right place at right time.

  22. OT, but I’ve got a question for you guys to ponder…

If (and its a big if) Charlie Davies hypothetically has a dream loan this season at D.C. and returns to his pre-accident form, does he immediately return as a starter, and if so…who gets sent to the bench?

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

  23. Wouldn’t mind seeing a team like Schalke take him. Right now they’re building the team around Raul and Jurado. Clint would have no problem taking over. Of course, how he would deal with Felix Magath is another story.

  24. Demps is #7 goal scorer in EPL right now – ok tied with several others, but still pretty good for a middie/occasional striker on mid-table team.

Knock on wood, if Clint stays healthy this is definitely his best ever season.

And as to comments above re who should be next USMNT co-captain, obviously Clint has earned it. Mikey might some day but just handing it to him would just be seen as another daddy’s boy move…not good for father or son to go there.

  25. Would hate to see him go and ride the pine. Besides maybe playing for a struggling team is better practice for the national team.

  26. Yeah, I’d love to see him on a bigger/better team, and I’m sure after this season he’ll get a lot of interest. Can’t see how he couldn’t…just a matter of Fulham letting him go 🙂

  27. Agree with the crappy service he gets. Thought he was in a number of open positions with good look at goal and no service from his teammates. Then a great header on a good cross aimed at no one in particular.

  28. really? you’re going to bring the landycakes arguments back? have you forgotten the world cup already?

They’re both great players and it’d be hard to say that one is better than the other, right now.

  29. Deuce needs to move. I’m sorry but he gets shyte service, EVERY GAME and makes goals outta nothin! He plays for a better team and he scores even more. No brainer.

  30. I’m not sure Clint really wants that role. Not that he couldn’t handle it, but I think he’s enough of a leader by his determination and attitude. Same with Donovan. After Boca, Howard, and LD I’d like to see Mike Bradley with the armband.
