Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

TevezRafael (Reuters Pictures)

Few league matches are anticipated as much as the Manchester derby, and even though the earlier meeting this season between Manchester City and Manchester United ended in a scoreless deadlock, there's reason to believe that Saturday's clash at Old Trafford will supply some drama and fireworks.

United, coming off its first loss of the season, will look to put perhaps the final dent in City's Premier League title plans, as a win for the Red Devils would put them eight points clear of their crosstown rivals with a game in hand. A win for the Citizens would keep hope of an elusive title alive.

Other intriguing matches in Europe include Aston Villa taking on Blackpool, where Michael Bradley could make his Villa debut, and a battle between Italian contenders AS Roma and Napoli. For those in need of an international soccer fix, look no further than the final matches of the Under-20 Copa Sudamericano in Peru, where rising stars like Neymar and Juan Manuel Iturbe will be on display.

Those of you who don't subscribe to FoxSoccer.tv will have added viewing options this weekend (and week). FoxSoccer.tv is offering a free seven-day trial, so you can see all the games for free this weekend.

If you will be watching any of Saturday's games, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. “Bradley Sr.’s number one rule has always been that you need playing time.”

Every national team manager, including BB feels that playing time for your club is always a good idea for a US player but he’s never said that is the only thing that determines your playing time for the USMNT.

Do you have a quote? A lot of people have assumed that but there are plenty of exceptions, if you care to research the matter.

For example, he brought Freddy Adu, who had about 10 minutes for Monaco that season, to the 2009 Confederations Cup and the Gold Cup in one summer. Even though Adu did not play in the Confed Cup and only played a little in the Gold Cup he was on the roster and had a chance in practice to prove he deserved to play. Apparently he didn’t make a strong enough case in practice.

  2. so BB rule of no club play no NATS play is just hot air, I think we all know that rule is only for the fringe players that he doesn’t quiet feel conformatble with. I remember when he selected Gooch for the WC he was asked by a reporter why he selected him, the reporter knowing fully well about this so call rule and BB just said that Gooch is a very important part of the team, end of questions.

  3. OMG BRADLEY HAS BEEN AT VILLA 12 WHOLE DAYS AND “WORD” IS THAT HE HAS NO CHANCE OF PLAYING!

    Appearances can be deceiving, eh?

  4. Don’t know if anyone is watching after all of the Bradley panic this morning, but Bocanegra just scored for ASSE in their derby match.

  5. Spanish blood? by the way i think he is italian descent. Maybe you could just link it to all players that speak latin based languages.

  6. Can’t wait until Davies scores a goal or two for D.C. United and Bob doesn’t bring him to a friendly. The meltdown on this board will be legendary.

If Davies is named to DCU’s roster, expect season tickets requests to go through the roof.

  7. I thought MB did well today. Helped preserve the draw with 10 men. After settling down had a calming presence for Villa, keeping the ball.

Very bad move from Makoun’s perspective. Basically opens the door for MB to take his job.

  8. Lord knows, everyone should just pass the debut moment of one of the USMNT’s best field players in a new league with silence and stoicism.

  9. What is it with commentators pronouncing the name Meireles? They seem to say it differently every time. Now I’m just confused. They better sort it out because he’s Liverpool’s bright spot right now.

  10. On a lighter note, Davies scored 2 goals on United’s friendly. Yes, it was against T&T U-20, but look at this twit from DCU:
75′: Davies bags his second goal, blowing past T&T’s defense and blasting the ball near post. 4-0

  11. Bradley’s debut was… meh? Fair number of turnovers when he came on the pitch. Nervousness? Maybe.

Had one good defensive play to block a shot.

  12. Mikey did alright. He gave up some possession when he first got on. Might have been nervousness might have been a sloppy pitch. He put in a fantastic tackle outside the box to block a shot. It was an alright cameo.

  13. I guess some needs to try and even out the apparent man-love on these boards for M. Bradley. Kid is good, but the collective orgasm when he was put on the pitch was a little too funny.
