Americans Abroad: Wednesday Rewind

Michael Bradley (Reuters)

Michael Bradley's anticipated first start for Aston Villa came on Wednesday, and while it may have been memorable to Bradley, the result that came with it is one to be forgotten.

Playing in Aston Villa's FA Cup match against Manchester City, Bradley went 71 minutes before being subbed off. Bradley and the rest of the Villans' midfielders were overrun by the talented Gareth Barry and David Silva, and the result was a 3-0 loss that eliminated Aston Villa from the tournament.

Bradley wasn't the only American Abroad player in action on Wednesday. Here is how the others who played on Wednesday fared:

  • Brad Friedel started, played 90 minutes and made five saves in Aston Villa's 3-0 loss vs. Manchester City.
  • Michael Bradley started and played 71 minutes for Aston Villa.
  • Brad Guzan did not dress for Aston Villa.

  • Maurice Edu started and played 90 minutes in Rangers' 1-0 loss vs. Celtic.
  • Dominic Cervi dressed but did not play in Celtic's 1-0 win vs. Rangers.

  • Oguchi Onyewu dressed but did not play in Twente Enschede's 1-0 win vs. FC Utrecht.

What do you think of these performances? How do you feel Bradley did in his first EPL start?

  1. And to be fair, it seems to be less rampant now. Now people are too busy getting worked up over one poor showing in a cup match.

  2. Wow, people were really bashing Jones? I guess that’s an example of the reason why I rarely read the comments section on SBI anymore. I stand corrected.

  3. Where I wish you were right, but that’s not the case for the vocal people on these boards. It is too bad because where I think jones is much better, he is also older, so it is nice to Bradley still improving his form.

Maybe you could go back and read the boards from last weekend, just to see the recent Jones bashing. Have a good night.

  4. And we were talking about Edu…. i was responding to Mingjai’s first post, I understand with this forum format you can see it as I was talking about you…. +1 back at ya :-p

  5. Actually I was not referring to your post on Gooch, just on those who didn’t understand Europe, as in Europa… Lol insecurity KFree?

  6. I’m on the same page as Mike.

“Dempsey is single handedly keeping an inferior club up talent wise to AVs squad.”

That’s as ignorant as it gets. I’m a HUGE fan of Deuce, but that’s a patently dumb statement. AJ coming off injury has made a big impact for Fulham. Brede Hangeland is a solid defender who trots up on corners and scores goals. Fulham is working with what they have, and I think they’re doing a damn good job. Dempsey is having the season of his career, but he’s not doing anything single handedly.

As far as Villa’s squad is concerned a lot of people clearly are just misinformed. Gabby has been hurt almost the whole season. O’Neill leaving caused a lot of unrest (and Milner leaving obviously). Dunne and the entire back line have struggled most of the season. Teams have been trying to poach Ashley Young. Just a whole lot of unrest and an altogether bad start. The acquisition of Bent I think has been a big turning point. They’re really just now starting to come together. If you watched the FA cup game, you didn’t watch Aston Villa. Plain and simple.

  7. Straw man. There are no “Bradley fan boys” who look to pounce on Jermain Jones. Actually, I don’t think there are any US fans who look to pounce on Jermain Jones.
