MLS Ticker: FCD tops RBNY reserves, Dynamo schools junior college & more

FC Dallas' starters matched up with New York Red Bulls reserves, and a predictable outcome ensued.

Marvin Chavez notched a brace, and Maykel Galindo and Eric Avila tacked on insurance goals in the second half, as FCD defeated the Red Bulls, 4-0, in Casa Grande, Ariz., on Monday.

The Red Bulls, who are going up against Mexican club Atlas on Tuesday night, fielded a lineup of trialists, reserves and fringe starters. Carl Robinson, Carlos Mendes and Salou Ibrahim were the only Red Bulls with significant MLS experience who played, while rookies John Rooney, Tyler Lassiter and Corey Hertzog and 2010 first-round SuperDraft pick Austin da Luz earned playing time against an FCD lineup that was at nearly full strength.

The one wrinkle for FCD was that Brek Shea played at centerback, which he has been doing on occasion this preseason. Highlights and postgame reaction from the match can be found here.

Here are a few more items from around the league:

HOUSTON ROUTS SAN JAC

Cam Weaver tallied two goals to lead the Houston Dynamo past San Jacinto Junior College, 5-0, in a preseason scrimmage on Monday.

Brad Davis opened the scoring with a third-minute penalty kick before the floodgates opened. Weaver scored both of his goals before halftime, and rookie Will Bruin and Homegrown signing Alex Dixon scored goals two minutes apart in the second half to finish off the damage.

DE GUZMAN DOUBTFUL FOR SEASON OPENER

Toronto FC Designated Player Julian de Guzman is likely to be out for the team's season opener against the Vancouver Whitecaps as he continues his recovery from offseason knee surgery.

Du Guzman had an operation for a torn meniscus in December, and TFC manager Aron Winter said he is still 3-4 weeks from getting into game shape. He has been running and slowly coming along in training.

EARTHQUAKES SIGN GK WEBER

The San Jose Earthquakes fortified their goalkeeping corps by coming to terms with backup Andrew Weber, who will compete with rookie David Bingham for time behind entrenched starter Jon Busch.

Weber, who was been with the Earthquakes the last two seasons, did not appear in any matches in 2010 before being released in June.

What did you think of Monday's results? Do you think Shea would be better used at centerback? Think that Weaver should start for Houston this season? Disappointed that de Guzman won't be ready for the season opener? Like the signing for San Jose?

  1. No mention of Kassel who is another rookie for Red Bull that played out of his normal position. The versatility of Kassel is evident as he is capable of playing many positions. He has always played central mid but was impressive as RB due to the many injuries that the defense has sustained during preseason.
