Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

CherundoloBayern (AP)

It's a big day for European-based American players, with as many as eight playing in games on TV today.

Steve Cherundolo and Hannover 96 face Bayern Munich in arguably the most important game of the day involving an American, as Hannover looks to fend off Bayern's challenge for third place in the Bundesliga, a place that holds a Champions League berth.

There are a few matches that will feature Americans on both sides as well, with Clint Dempsey's Fulham taking on Jermaine Jones' Blackburn and Stuart Holden's Bolton facing Michael Bradley's Aston Villa.

If you're looking for the best European match-up of the day, you could do worse than the Juventus-AC Milan rivalry, which will be rekindled today.

If you will be watching today's action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. Arsenal: winning nothing the right way since 2005.

Honestly though, it’d be great if ARS (or anyone for that matter) stood up to Man U this season. United just don’t strike me as a championship team this year….but the other contenders have pretty much handed them the trophy. I guess a close race would be too much to ask for.

  2. Yeah. Houllier just clearly doesn’t seem to have it. At least not for AV. His win %? A dismal 35.

Some positive words for Mikey B at least: “In midfield you had three international players. Stiliyan Petrov is our captain. It was a debut for Michael Bradley but he has proven in training that he is getting there.”

  3. Eh, after a minute or two I’d be upset at my team for not executing.

I don’t bother with offside calls unless they are obviously incorrect.

  4. Like I said I don’t feel horrible either, but I am able to admit the Refs had a horrible final 15 mins. I mean what would you be saying if it were your team and not Arsenal?

  5. Rob,

I’ve got no sympathy for a team that chokes for an entire game and then hangs their hat one missed call.

I really like Wenger, and as a Spaniard I like Cesc, but Arsenal did nothing to execute. If you cannot put any one of the many, many chances they had then you don’t deserve to win.

  6. It happens more then you seem to realize. How many times do we get replays after a goal showing how close the player was offsides… I think it happens in almost every other game…

I want to know why are you so Anti-Arsenal? I mean I am no fan of the team, but I will admit when they get screwed.

  7. The Old Firm games are like a war zone. Scotland has to get their society in line because that is ridiculous.

My favorite part is Bougherra grabbing the referee’s arm and throwing it down when he pulls the yellow card out.

  8. Watched it twice. They were 5 yards away from the line on the field, and the camera angle was not down the line.

It is impossible to tell from what we saw if he was onside or offside. Only the linesman really knows.

  9. I’m thinking over the entire game. He got a yellow for dissent on a foul that didn’t even involve him.

He is young, but I think that’s even worse that he has adopted that attitude early.

  10. How often does that actually happen? The ref siding with the offensive player. Not too often.

So don’t expect it to magically begin here. But I agree that Arsenal have only themselves to blame for not putting away one of a dozen SOG from inside the box.

  11. Man they have to be an entirely xenophobic team, hateful of Americans. Let’s start cheering against AV, because the player we want to see play is benched.

  12. Really?

It was a very frustrating game for Arsenal. He didn’t seem overly angry to me. It’s also worth remembering how old he is.

  13. Adrian – two things: 1) Travis is right; it is a penalty regardless of whether he goes down or not – even though he got the shot away. That is the rule. 2) You could tell he was onside by the lines on the field – watch it again.

  14. Leaning offside? Really I’m no Arsenal fan, but if it is that close the ref is to side with the attacking player. It should have been a goal there. However, Arsenal should have put away one of those other attempts before.

  15. AV loans Licaj and brings Bradley in only to sit on the bench. Maybe both moves are deserving but it’s nice to see them lose.

It’s much easier to cheer for Fulham and Bolton. go you yanks

  16. I think he was leaning offside, but how can anyone know since the angle they showed was very inconclusive.

The story of today’s match was Arsenal choking on dozens of opportunities.

  17. His shot was rubbish cause he was falling over cause he got pushed, are you blind? Bramble has got both his arms extended into arshavin’s back

    Reply
  18. Come on Arshavin was on sides by a yard…. Thats the worst for me. Penalty probably should have been called, but Arshavin did get the shot off.

    Reply
  19. That’s just it, he wasn’t pushed over. He stayed on his feet and took the shot.

Sure it’s a penalty if he falls, but he took the contact and stayed up.

  20. Iffy on the penalty call, but the only thing taking points away from Arsenal is Arsenal themselves.

They have been completely disjointed in the final third, and their defense has been very poor.

  21. Muting FSC commentators is becoming something of a norm for me.

Can we at least pretend to be unbiased instead of just raving about whatever big club is playing?

    Reply
  22. The ref’s calls are just not on Arsenal’s side this game. Arshavin should have had a penalty earlier on, and I don’t think that that was onside.

    Reply
  23. Nasri hesitated, but kept playing. He knew that they need the goal and time is not on their side. Agree that it’s weird, but I can see his thought process.

    Reply
  24. That is one of the weirdest things I’ve seen.

Wilshere is down injured outside of Sunderland’s box, and Arsenal refused to kick the ball out trying to take advantage.
