Ferreira’s brace leads FC Dallas past Rapids

FC Dallas headed into Friday's MLS Cup Final rematch with the Colorado winless and in dire need of three points against an undefeated Rapids side. By the end of the night, Dallas reminded us how good it can be.

Reigning MLS MVP David Ferreira scored a pair of goals while the FC Dallas defense posted its first shutout of the season in an impressive 3-0 thrashing of the Rapids on Friday night at Pizza Hut Park.

Dallas defender Ugo Ihemelu opened the scoring with a 26th-minute volley before Ferreira scored his first of two on a slick chip of a beautiful Fabian Castillo pass in the 40th minute. Ferreira added an insurance goal in the second half off an Eric Avila to secure the victory.

Here are the highlights.

What did you think of Dallas' victory? See the West champions getting back on track? Wondering whether Colorado's fast start was a product of a weak schedule?

  1. I agree “outrageous” is a strong choice of words. But, if you notice the time I left the comment (1:40 AM) I wasn’t really trying to tone down my hyperbole, especially considering the intoxicated state I was in. (p.s., for a good social commentary on our common practice of using over the top adjectives, check out Louis C.K.’s latest HBO special. He has a bit about it. Pretty funny).

I don’t think I can compare the injurious capabilities of jewelry and pacifiers. That wasn’t my point. I wasn’t trying to analogize this case to those that invoke a rule intended to protect other players. Nor was I trying to make Ferreira’s conduct fall within the jewelry rule’s ambit. I’m just saying there are existing rules which ban having certain items on you as a player. Whatever the intent of the law, the fact remains: you can’t have certain things on you (e.g., jewelry). The way he hid the pacifier shows he knew there was something a bit wrong with having it. He wasn’t concealing it solely for an element of surprise, was he? If all was good and dandy, just put it around your neck or suck on it during the match. His concealment shows he probably knew it he shouldn’t have it on him. I was pissed with Hassli being sent off and I can’t believe nothing happened to the league MVP for his little show. That’s all I’m saying…even if I’m saying it with specious arguments and over-the-top language.

  2. “outrageous”

That word used to have a much higher threshold.

Please explain the similarity between jewelry and a plastic pacifier. How is it that you classify a pacifer as “jewelry”?

The ban on jewelry was intended to protect players from getting hurt or cut. Please explain how a plastic pacifier can injure another player.

    Thanks,

  3. uh, what about the diaper he was wearing. was that also dedication? you do know that a significant percentage of brazilian professional players wear thongs under their kits? just saying, it could be a weird brazilian thing.

  4. You a father?

I think it’s cool to see a man celebrate being a father. In fact, that’s cooler than both goals. Combined. Times 100.

  5. Not that it matters, but Ferreira was offside on his first goal. Still a total beatdown by FC Dallas. Rapids probably got caught looking ahead to RSL a bit here.

  6. Anyone who has a problem with a goal celebration is likely the kind of person who has a whole load of rules in their life and is probably not much for spontaneous good times.

Just kick back and enjoy it ladies and gentlemen. It’s sports. It’s supposed to be fun and exciting and interesting.

There are already too many rules in the world and too many people enforcing them.

I think since LB is the median between LM & CB that Hyndman should continue to use him there. I think he would excel in that position after seeing him last night aswell. A succesfull season at LB would mean more US National Team caps for Shea aswell so if I were him, I would be WANTING to play there.

  8. His wife is pregnant right now. Players all around the world do this to dedicate goals to their recently conceived/born children. Chill dude, it ain’t that big of a deal.

  9. Do you not understand. He was evidently a tribute to a family’s newborn. You have not seen how he made the gesture of lullabies, as well as in Bebeto WC94?

  10. Seriously, though, on the point about respect and the Rapids, those 2-3 fans you complain about show up only because the team was given no respect in the first place by so many and then when they won — well look at that! — they were still given no respect. They played ugly. They ruined the whole Cup. They were a fluke. On and on.

What do you expect the reaction of Rapids fans to be? “Oh, you fans of otter teams and MLS mavens in general are right, actually: we beat you all and won the Cup but we really just suck and got lucky. OK.” ?

  11. Man some people sure are sore about Ferreira celebrating. When a man plays that well, deal with it. He spanked and schooled the Rapids, bwahaha.

  12. Calm down! It means he dedicated those goals to his recent born child or some baby that means something to him. I like it.

  13. He should have gotten a caution for excessive celebration, and for playing all game with an object that isn’t part of the uniform! Ridiculous. Congratulations on being a dad.

  14. So can you bring anything that’s not soccer related with you onto a field during a game?
What about a handgun if your wife just got her gun license?

  15. Right, the point is not whether the punishment or lack or is correct by FIFA rules, the point is FIFA makes no f’ing sense.

If anything all goal celebrations should be allowed EXCEPT those in which a player is carrying a foreign object on the field during play, as Ferreira did with the pacifier.

  16. I like Colorado, they’re a good team, but I’m mostly just glad that those 2-3 Rapids fans who show up in every MLS thread whining about how their team gets no respect will hopefully stfu at least for one week.

It’s kind of like the Sounders, I wish them success and massive attendance figures, but 1-2 games drawing 15k would still be nice to shut up their smug fans.

  17. He just found out his wife is pregnant. Ohh, and there’s been a rule for awhile that says, “Don’t take off your jersey.” There isn’t one that says, “Don’t use a pacifier.” Seems pretty simple to me.

  18. FCD finally put it together tonight. What happened to Benitez? He’s a legit LB, but Brek did ok. Great win for Dallas!. Major tinkering to happen in the “regular season.” More to come … Watch out MLS.

  19. Dallas looked good.. They had a lot of chances.
The Brek Shea experiment is interesting to watch. Somewhere somehow there’s a best position for him. LB could very well be it.

  20. Yeah really strange to think that he had that thing on him from the start of the game. Can you imagine putting that thing in your mouth after it’s been getting all sweaty and hot tied to your waistband? Yuck.

  21. +1. I know that there are specific rules about players having to remove all their jewelry, including wedding rings. So, it seems outrageous that he’s on the pitch with a pacifier hidden who knows were. Should we start frisking people? I hope not, but something should’ve been done. Caution him. Have a word with him. I’m no Vancouver fan, but so many people were like “That’s the rule” with Hassli. No exceptions, they said. Let’s be consistent then: If we want no discretion for refs and want them to strictly follow the letter of the law, then something should’ve been done here.

  22. Well, they are different actions. As far as I can tell, FIFA only instructs its refs to give goal celebration yellows for pulling off the shirt, making inflammatory or derisive gestures, or just wasting too much time.

  23. So let me get this straight. Hassli gets a second yellow for revealing a legitimate jersey, but Ferreira gets nothing for hiding a pacifier in his jersey and sucking on it after a goal? How odd to think of Ferreira running around the field with a hidden pacifier on his person. I mean, WTF?

  24. I was at the game tonight and the real highlight was lloyd and Shea, lloyd looked really good and Shea started at Left back and was really effective. Shea does still need to learn to be more careful with the ball as turnovers by a defender are more costly but I like the look of the team with him there
