It’s Old School Q&A Time

It's that time again. Time for SBI readers to send me soccer questions in an old-school version of the SBI Live Q&A.

What's the old-school version? You submit your questions in the comments section below, and I'll post answers at a future date. We do far more Live Q&As these days, but I know not everyone can make it to those, so if you have a question you'd like to submit, just ask it below.

Want to talk MLS? U.S. national team? The Gold Cup? UEFA Champions League? Send your soccer questions my way.

Fire away.

  1. Now that we officially know Philly passed on Feilhaber – who do you think they’re waiting on this summer? Eddie Johnson? Adu?

  2. Goodson plays 90 minutes unless he is injured. Rolfe and Parkhurst, different story, but Parkhurst still plays more than he sits. Benny didn’t leave MLS for Denmark. He signed straight with Hamburg from UCLA, then went to Derby and then Denmark. So he doesn’t even fit your question.

  3. Colombia was an incredible football nation. it wasn’t until it became clear that every club was funded by gangs/drug money that the money really left football and their league, and subsequently, their national team. that all came clear during the whole Escobar fiasco. they’ll eventually get back up there, but it’ll take time. but they certainly have players that can really contribute to MLS.

  4. Why does Nowak insist on playing 2 Defensive Mids. I think the Union would be better suited with 1 Attacking 1 Defensive and 2 wide players. Having Miglioranzi and Carrol/Okugo in at the same time limits what we can do offensively.

  5. Can you see Ritchie Williams pulling a Sterling Cooper Draper Price and going setting up shop at a smaller office and sticking it too his old firm? Or does he not have enough stock to pull it off?

  6. Why not? I’ve been to several international soccer games, and the other team’s fans songs/chants are much more interesting than USA! USA! USA! (not that I’m against USA!, but would just like something better).

Did you know several years ago there was an ‘offical’ soccer chant announced? But have you ever heard it? We need one that grows from the ground up.

    ‘Offical’ chant

Goal, goal, goal for the Red White and Blue

Our legs will never tire, our hearts will see us though,

Goal, goal, goal for the Red White and Blue.

  7. The generation just isn’t a top class generation and the media seems to have blamed the coaching in the past. The coach they have now is doing a terrific job in my opinion – almost tied Spain away from home, tied us. However, in the last friendly they collapsed.

Don’t think the coach has figured out the proper team yet.

  8. How come the media doesn’t call out BB more? I know it has something to do with you guys getting your press passes revoked by ussf . BB is a joke. Michael can’t even get on the bench for a Aston Villa and he still starts every game. Not to mention he called Bornstein into a single camp and somehow started him all these games.

I am not sure who should of got the job instead but BB has done absolutely nothing for american soccer. If you think winning a gold cup is a big deal then you are kidding yourself.

  9. Thats a valid point Papi – competition is good. I happen to think it’s possible he can be a better central defender than the ones we have, particularly in situations where the US is playing inferior opponents who are intent on parking the bus. My opinion has nothing to do with where he plays professionally, but rather how he plays and what he could add to the back line from a passing perspective. Defensively, he seems to have the ability to hold up, particularly if the majority of the work would be against counters.

I am not too familiar with how Goodson is in terms of passing, but understand he is a solid defender and good in set pieces. If he is a better solution, so be it. I guess what I am looking for is less hoofing the ball up the field, and more connections between our back line and mid/attackers.

Apologies for the dupe – originally put this in the wrong spot.

  11. 2 questions:

    1. Best, worst, and most boring parts of your job?

    2. Over/under on goals Charlie Davies needs to score to get a call-up for the Gold Cup?

  13. Ives,
    Do you admire Ghadafi?

    Seriously though,

What do MLS and USSF have to do to improve the quality of this refereeing? Where do we start to get better products? Can we implement something like Mark Cuban wanted for the NBA before David Stern shut him down where we hire from the best college ranks, perhaps other leagues? Please tell me it will get better the Beautiful Game isn’t meant to be viewed through such dirty windows.

  14. You have got to be kidding…..without the offside rule there would be almost no goals because teams would ALWAYS have guys sitting back in front of the goal….The game would SUCK.

  15. PLAY

Why does everyone seem to think that nearly every coach this guy has ever come across is making a mistake with him? Maybe he just isn’t that good, and his game hasn’t translated well to the Sr. Level….I don’t think he would start for most teams in MLS either. He’s small not super fast and has never exactly been a hard worker.

  16. Bad Idea…..Bottom Line. Mo is a Midfielder and that’s it. USMNT Fans need to accept the fact that we can only get 11 players on the field at one time, and its not a bad thing to have competition for starting jobs. Just because we have a guy who is on a famous team in Europe that doesn’t mean he’s a better option playing out of position than someone else.
