  2. This RSL Fan has and will continue to support each and every MLS team in the Concacaf champions league. Always. Here is to the C.Rapids advancing to the final next year and showing that USA soccer is made in the heavens of the Rocky Mountains.

    Go RSL!

  3. although youre sorta right, i think the majority of fans from TFC (from what ive read) prob want them to win as itd be good for the league as a whole (never mind the country). Dunno what Van is saying

  4. Aren’t we putting a little too much pressure on these guys? It is great they are in the final. I have been critical of MLS performances in the Champions League. The league will not get the respect everyone thinks it deserves, until we start dominating our regional rivals. We have to take it one game at a time here.

  5. I’m sure I’m going to piss everyone off but I actually would like to see Monterrey win because I think they would have the best chance to finally do something in the Club World Cup. Part of the problem with some of the recent Mexican teams that have made it has been that thanks to their Half season setup the team that has taken the field at the CWC has been very different from the one who actually won the right to be there. Monterrey on the other hand has basically the same team that has won two Mexican league titles the last couple of years and would be a tough matchup for an eventual South American Champion….I do like RSL, but I just don’t think they are on that level just yet. Also I would be willing to place some early money on Jason Kreis roaming the sidelines for the USMNT @ the 2014 WC in Brazil.

  6. “I respectfully disagree. The effect certainly won’t be dramatic, but every step helps… Obviously one year doesn’t have a huge effect, but if the MLS consistently contends for titles, the effect will be significant over time…”

Well I think I will have to respectfully disagree with the notion that we disagree, then!

I agree with comments like the ones you make above, and that every little step helps. And inwouldn’t even call this such a little step. I’m saying it seems to me that many people are talking about this like they do in fact expect one CCL year, one CCL final series, to have a huge, dramatic effect.

Maybe we disagree on that description of sentiment reaction athanthe about it all, but that’s my impression.

You know, RSL may well win it. I wouldn’t be at all surprised. And then in another year or two, maybe it will be a very fond but no longer very relevant memory, like the USA win over Spain in the Confederations Cup or something: a great win and a milestone, but not really indicative of any major, long-lasting change in American soccer’s trajectory beyond that, it seems…

  7. Well yes I certainly agree that they’ve already reached a milestone in getting to the final, yes. I would just say winning will be another milestone, and a good one, but not some sort of quantum leap forward, really. It will be a milestone for American soccer like, say, Dempsey’s double-digit scoring in the EPL this year.

As for big name players, for example, the league has already been attracting them. I don’t see a significant increase in them wanting to come to the league in general (though maybe to RSL specifically, of course!) simply because 1 MLS team won the CCL final 1 time. Seems like people are banking an awful lot on some sort of sea change out of this (at least if RSL wins). I think “milestone” is a better way to look a it, I guess.

  8. I respectfully disagree. The effect certainly won’t be dramatic, but every step helps. Competing for and winning championships helps draw new talent to the league, draw new fans to the league (to increase revenue and therefore quality of play), and inspire young players to grow up hoping to play in MLS (which in the long run raises the standard of play). Obviously one year doesn’t have a huge effect, but if the MLS consistently contends for titles, the effect will be significant over time (i.e. MLS as a championship contending league will not continue to keep “going forward/evolving” at the same pace as a consistently losing league.) The consistency that drives this effect has to start sometime, so why not now?

That being said, in response to my earlier response, I’m not saying that every MLS fan owes RSL their loyalty: rivalries are still rivalries. But in this instance I think it would be perfectly understandable for most fans to unite behind them (like a Michigan fan cheering for Ohio State just so they can say the Big10 bested the SEC, or whatever)

  9. Your last paragraph has good points but one can’t help but feel like RSL has reached a milestone by simply getting to the championship games (since new CONCOCAF club tourney format change) and has the chance to reach another by winning it.

MLS stands to gain respect in the region and around the world. This could attract more DP type players and we see now that there are many foreign players looking at MLS as a great place to play. MLS teams will start to win this competition eventually but I hope it starts this year.

  10. Yeah, you know, this is what everybody’s been going on and on (and on and on and on) about, of course. And of course it could only help in that regard.

It is a little odd to hear how extremely much people apparently are convinced it’s going to help, though. It’s rather like discussion of the USMNT in the WC or other international play. Yeah sure it helps your image to win. This goes without saying. But the level of play of the MNT program didn’t change when they were ousted by Ghana. Their prospects for the future didn’t change. And if they had won, that wouldn’t have signalled any big change in the level of play or future prospects, either.

Same here: whether RSL wins or loses, the level of MLS as a league will continue to be what it is and will keep going forward at the pace it has been evolving. Good for them, if they win, and for MLS. But it’s not like the whole league will suddenly be tremendously valued everywhere if they win, or a laughingstock, if they lose.

  11. MFL and La Liga teams have nothing to prove. RSL winning the Champs League and making some noise in the Club World Cup raises the profile of the entire league, which is something all MLS fans should hope for, regardless of club loyalty.

  12. anyone know if the game will be on the spanish channels? i dont get FSC, but i get all the spanish channels like telemundo, galavision, etc

  13. Could not agree more…ESPN does a poor job with MLS…then again FSC is awful too…MLS has got to get a better national TV deal…perhaps Versus will weigh in…they were interested this season…

They also do not have the rights to the World Club Cup either….

  14. They may not have the rights, but they can still write an article about it. As much as I love ESPN, they treat MLS like garbage.

  15. I’m sorry but what pisses me off is the media coverage for such a historic event. This is BIGGER than the MLS Final! Shouldn’t ESPN be marketing this like mad?!?! i hope they do a better job with club world cup if we make it.

GO RSL! from your friendly neighborhood Galaxy 😉

  16. The title is a misnomer. It should really read “USA4RSL.” Didn’t see anyone from TO or VAN wishing you luck, which is just as well because we want to take it up north next year!

  17. For real. I’m definitely pulling for them but this is worse than those crappy videos that get made showing other athletes in the same city wishing the soccer team good luck in the final, etc.
