Real Salt Lake had a chance to make history on Wednesday night, but instead of history, RSL watched another team lift a trophy on its home turf.
Despite a plethora of early chances, and because of a handful of wasted late chances, RSL failed to score the goal that would make Real Salt Lake the first MLS team to win a CONCACAF Champions League title. Monterrey didn't have many chances on the night, but made one of them count, as Humberto Suazo's first half goal proved to be the difference as Monterrey won its first CONCACAF championship, beating RSL on aggregate in front of a sold-out crowd at Rio Tinto Stadium.
RSL started the match strongly, but failed to capitalize on a slew of scoring opportunities. Monterrey withstood the early onslaught and eventually found a good rhythm, with Suazo tallying just before halftime. RSL dominated possession for much of the second half, but it didn't matter as Monterrey defended well and Real Salt Lake players failed to convert when given chances to equalize.
The result was a sixth straight year of Mexican teams being kings of CONCACAF, while MLS goes back to the drawing board in its quest to win its first regional title since 2000.
RSL will come away extremely disappointed with Wednesday night's result, but still enjoyed a tournament run that set a new standard for MLS teams. Real Salt Lake was the first MLS team to really try to make a run in the new, more difficult CONCACAF Champions League tournament format, and came away having earned the respect of opponents from Costa Rica to Mexico, while raising the bar for MLS teams in future Champions League tournaments.
