Real Salt Lake vs. Monterrey: Match Night Commentary

Real Salt Lake Logo MonterreyLogo

Real Salt Lake will look to take a major step toward becoming the first MLS team to win the CONCACAF Champions League title by gaining a favorable result tonight against Monterrey in Mexico in the first leg of their two-game Championship series (10pm, Fox Soccer Channel)

Monterrey, Mexican champions in two of the past three Mexican seasons, will look to keep RSL from registering any road goals, while also trying to put some goals past a stingy Real Salt Lake defense. Monterrey enters the match having struggled a bit in league play, having gone winless in four straight, but as we learned in the RSL semifinal series against Saprissa, a team struggling in league play won't necessarily have the same issues in Champions League play.

RSL will look to become the first MLS team in 24 tries to win a competitive match in Mexico, though a draw would set things up nicely for Real Salt Lake's second leg at Rio Tinto Stadium.

SBI will be offering live commentary on tonight's match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

  1. Not really. I think the foreign players on RSL make the team so much better. Without Morales, RSL wouldn’t be as good. He’s way better than Beckerman on every level. Same with Saborio and any US striker in MLS. He’s just a more stkilled striker. He didn’t have the greatest game tonight but when he’s on, he’s probably one of the best strikers in MLS. No American striker in this league is better. I love the way RSL plays a good Latin game.

  2. No mai-tai’s just a shot of espresso. I don’t drink in the morning. Comparing a troll to a Nazi is rather absurd. I guess it’s your right to be disrespectful to millions of Jews that were killed by comparing them to a person so angry with the performance of their team that they go to a blog to talk s***.

  3. Oh should we expect our teams to play unattractive soccer? I hate all these People that hold the mls to such a low standard. We should expect the best team in mls to play good soccer.

  4. Can we all agree that MLS and Mexican Primera teams tend to reflect the play of their national sides? Isn’t that even true of every league?

  6. Manuel:

As a supporter of the first MLS team to win an international tournament. I have to say that every time I’ve watched DC United play a Mexican side the fans tend to yell, “Mexico, Mexico.” And you say that this isn’t us against Mexico? Thank you for stating “typical American resolve” when many of MLS player come from abroad as well. This rivalry is about the legitimacy of our league. Its been like watching my child grow up. And today I am a proud father.

  7. Actually, SBI’s readership is overwhelmingly male, so most of the whining is likely being done by men.

But let’s not let facts get in the way of insulting people, cause sexism is funny…right?
