Schalke vs. Manchester United: Your Running Commentary

The UEFA Champions League semifinals kick off today with upstart Schalke hosting favored Manchester United in the first leg of their tie (2:45 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel).

Schalke might be the underdog in this series, but that didn't get in the way of its overwhelming upset of cup holder Inter Milan in the quarterfinals. The hosts will be without injured star defender Benedikt Howedes, though, which will put even more stress on goalkeeper Manuel Neuer — a long-rumored Manchester United transfer target — to come up big against the likes of Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez.

If you will be watching the Schalke-Manchester United match, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action.

  1. Lol I understand but what I’m getting at is I don’t think Man U is a great a team but they toying with Schalke and Inter got blasted. I thought Inter was a much better team. After looking at this doubt they could have beaten Man U either.

  2. People are being much too harsh on the commentators. Schalke, based on the way they’ve played in this match so far, haven’t looked at all like scoring.

The color guy has been focusing on the game from Man United’s perspective, but it’s a broadcast out of England. I can’t imagine the broadcasts out of Germany would be a million miles different.

  3. it’s amazing how much United improved with the inclusion of Ferdinand and Valencia.. Imagine if they had been around for the whole season..

  4. “Either Man U is much better then Inter or Inter is worse then I thought.”

You realize those two are not mutually exclusive and it can be (and is) both, right?

  5. Ok Schalke let united score 2 and lure them into a false sense of security then hammer 5 goals in and then blast one into the commentators box.

  6. Is this the same Schalke team that beat down Inter? Either Man U is much better then Inter or Inter is worse then I thought.

  7. Why does anybody care about these dumb eurotrash eurosnob teams? Tonight is Vélez vs. LDU Quito in Buenos Aires, and it’s on Justin.tv, unlike the eurotarded “Champions” league. LDU is a vastly more intriguing team than a bunch of overrated rich eurotrash gapers.

  8. Is this the same announcer as from the Tottenham Champions League game against Real Madrid?
This is pretty bad but that guy took being an England homer to unprecedented levels, it was almost like listening to Hawk Harrelson do a White Sox game.

  9. I am seriously going to send an email to Sky Sports. Nobody this disrespectful and ignorant should be allowed commentating.

He doesn’t understand how Schalke is going to create opportunities at Old Trafford?

They scored 5 goals against Inter Milan, the defending champions.

  10. Come on, this commentator is extremely ignorant. European teams cannot play at United’s pace?

How is this man even allowed on TV. I would take Harkes or JP over this fool any day of the week.

  11. He’s certainly in the conversation so even if you disagree and name some others, it’s still not “crazy”… it’s not like he said Gomez or Green were the best keepers in the world.

  12. If i hear 1 more time how great of a passer Carrick is ill mute the tv. 1st of all if he was that great sir alex wouldnt be trying to replace him and 2 he would be on the england squad.

  13. It does matter who has the second leg. In home and away series the second leg is usually given to the better seeded team using points.

  14. It’s a legit question. It’s usually considered and advantage to play the second leg of the series at home….and since Monterrey had the better record he is questioning why they are playing it in Utah.

  15. I agree. He’s the only reason Man U. isn’t up by 4 goals to none right now. He’s clearly gotten into Chicarito’s head.. Not easy to do!

  16. They are both HUGE homers. Like when they were talking about how Schalke’s offense has no experience compared to United’s.

I’m sitting here on my futon thinking… um Raul? One of the best strikers ever?

  17. I know this has nothing to do with the game but I’m curious.

Does anyone one why the second leg of tomorrows final will be at Rio? I was looking at the tournaments statistics and Monterrey had the most point out of all the team. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

  18. Remind me to never listen to Sky Sports when Manchester United is playing.

The condescending tone against Schalke is rather upsetting.

  19. Every time I watch Schalke I am astounded by how good Neuer is. In my opinion, he is the best keeper in the world.

  20. This is the kind of pressure that Manchester United puts on towards the end of their games! If they keep the same pressure, I see a 4-0 result to United!
